New life is a wonderful gift. In a short year, a help-less newborn develops into an active toddler. The first step is always a major day of celebration for parents. But there are many milestones that came before it. He must learn to roll over and then, sit with support. Crawling comes before pulling up into a standing position. This leads to cruising and finally, the first step and with it, he begins a walk into his future. The expression “You’ve got to crawl before you can walk” is a gross understatement.

Our faith affirms that in dying we receive the wonderful gift of new life. It was Pastor Bob’s reward received on Good Friday. Death brought forth new life, but not just for him. It was a won-derful gift for FCCNH, the church he loved and faithfully served. It set us on a yearlong, new life timeline from helplessness to our walk into the future.

I am our first quarter new life milestone. For an infant, that’s tracking for objects with eyes, opening and shutting their hands and that won-derful grip around a finger. For a church, an inter-im minister shows up and sees the congregation for the first time, opening and closing his hand in embrace, experiencing the touch of hopeful people. I continue to be grateful to be part of this wonderful journey.

Our second quarter milestone is upon us. There may be some babble and laughter. It may seem like we are just crawling. But we are, in fact, moving rapidly as a church. The next step

toward walking into our new life is the selection of a pulpit committee. It is an important mile-stone, particularly since it hasn’t happened in this place for over half of a century. There has been much prayer and reflection on the names of the people on the pulpit committee. The Holy Spirit has led us.

A child’s development is based upon nurture. Without the active participation of parents and caregivers, milestones cannot be accomplished. The same is true for church. Without the active participation and nurture by each member, our milestone can’t be accomplished. Each need to be present to show your support and vote for those who have been nominated to serve. They will need your nurturing prayers in the days and weeks ahead.

More will be required of you. In the third quarter, the pulpit committee will visit with you, to discover who we are and what sort of pastor we hope to find. The fourth quarter will be a time for search and call, to discover exactly who God has in mind for us. In the end, you will be asked again to vote and nurture with prayer because without you, we can’t walk into our future. We will though, sooner than you can imagine, be-cause this is God’s promise of new life.

How has the youth group had a positive impact on my life?

The youth group and the Youth Hut have always been a safe space with a lot of positive energy; kids that have different personalities, different ethnic backgrounds, and different situations all come into one place because it just feels great to be there. Sleepovers, mission trips, Sundays during church and in the evenings, all of these have created beautiful moments and memories for me. I’ve seen so many friendships be created that exist even outside the church circle, which is something very special.

One of the biggest impacts the youth group has left on me is the idea of building up your community, helping those in need. Projects like Operation Santa Claus are built into the way our church runs, giving us the chance to brighten up other kids’ lives at a young age -- it set a precedent of what we were capable of when we worked together. For me personally, mission trips were probably the most fulfilling and impactful things we did as a group. To stand in a home that was ravaged by Hurricane Harvey, to feel it with all my senses, blew my mind. And then to be an extra set of arms, another hand in helping somebody out from that situation, made

me feel the impact I could have in others’ lives, whether it was picking up debris or redoing ceilings. Going to the Tennyson Center and bonding with kids who had been through really bad experiences was super meaningful to me. It taught me about patience, and in a strange way about being a parent, that your actions and state of being echo down through generations.

My time in the youth group has brought me countless lessons that I’ll keep with me for the rest of my life. I want to especially thank Jeremy for all his hard work in creating a space for all of us to grow and become better humans. He will be severely missed. — Declan Houlihan

WEEK ONE • Declan Houlihan

As most of you already know, the support and embrace of our youth has long been a priority at FCCNH. For the next several weeks you will have the opportunity to hear about the impact of that mission on

some of those young people in a series of essays from senior/former FCCNH Youth Group members.

As always, there are many ways to reach us with your prayer needs.

On Sundays, there are cards in the morning bulletins. You can write your prayers on the back and put them in any of the offering plates set out near the doors from the Sanctuary. You may also slide your prayer cards through the slot in the Prayer Cabinet near the drinking fountain outside the Chapel doors.

During the week, your prayers can reach us in several ways:• Via email to one of our Prayer Group leaders:

Eunice Cox ([email protected]),

Irion DeRouen ([email protected]), Barbara Wiles ([email protected]), or Janet Bruce ([email protected]) • Via email on the church website: www.fccnh.org/worship/prayer-requests • Via phone call to the church office: 818-763-8218

If you are at the church, prayer cards are available at the Prayer Cabinet outside the Chapel. Fill one out and put it in the cabinet slot, or drop it off in the church office.

Prayers received during the week in one of these ways will be emailed out to Prayer Group members. Unless urgent, prayers received on Saturday or Sunday will be compiled for the list given to members on Monday mornings.

The sole purpose of the Prayer Group has always been to pray for those in need. Prayers are lifted aloud in the Chapel on Monday mornings, and then become part of the daily prayer discipline of our members. As always, all prayers that come to us are kept strictly confidential and are not shared elsewhere.

PRAYER is always there
