1 Newsletter No. 33 - Term 4Week 3 Thursday 23 October 2014 From the Acting Principal…………. A big welcome… I’d like to officially welcome Stewart Clyde to our school. Stewart is our new Leading Teacher, effectively filling the position made vacant by Anita Elliott last year. He has come to us from Jells Park Primary School, where he was also a Leading Teacher. We are thrilled to have Stewart on board, and very excited by the extensive knowledge and experience he brings to our school. Stewart is working across the school this term, but particularly in our 5/6 area where he will be taking a grade from next year. Welcome Stewart! and a big farewell! We would like to say a huge congratulations to Michelle Ogilvie for being awarded the Assistant Principal position at Orchard Grove Primary School. This is sad news for Kalinda, as we will be losing a wonderful Leading Teacher, but great news for Michelle who we know will be a fantastic Assistant Principal. Michelle has been with us for four years and in that time has led our English program across the school, as well as being our Senior school leader. Michelle’s extensive education knowledge, the high standards she sets in everything she does, and her dedication to our students were an enormous influence on our school over the last four years and will be sorely missed. We wish her all the best in her new position from the beginning of 2015. Whole school transition sessions There’s nothing like the arrival of next year’s Prep students to make you realise how fast the year has gone! The first transition session for Foundation 2015 (all Prep classes will now be named ‘Foundation’ as a requirement of the national curriculum) is this Friday morning. This year, all the students in our school will be moving up one grade each time next year’s Foundation students have a transition session. This means that our current Preps will go into Grade 1, Grade 2s to Grade 3 etc. This will provide all students in the school with a fantastic preparation for next year, getting used to many of the buildings, teachers and students that will make up their learning environment in 2015. From the Acting Principal………….

A big welcome… I’d like to officially welcome Stewart Clyde to our school. Stewart is our new Leading Teacher, effectively filling the position made vacant by Anita Elliott last year. He has come to us from Jells Park Primary School, where he was also a Leading Teacher. We are thrilled to have Stewart on board, and very excited by the extensive knowledge and experience he brings to our school. … and a big farewell! We would like to say a huge congratulations to Michelle Ogilvie for being awarded the Assistant Principal position at Orchard Grove Primary School. This is sad news for Kalinda, as we will be losing a wonderful Leading Teacher, but great news for Michelle who we know will be a fantastic Assistant Principal. LEVEL 3 ABACUS

Once again Level 3 was visited by Karen Ma, who happily shared her abacus expertise with us. In the group this week, was Emma, Peliza, Maddy, Kira, Jess C, Jess B and Rina. Emma commented that the abacus was easy to use when counting in units and tens, Maddy thought it was easier to calculate on the abacus than she thought it would be and Peliza learnt how to count using the abacus.

LEVEL 2 NARRATIVES Level 2 have been writing narratives during the first two weeks of term, mainly to focus on the use of paragraphs. Following a structured flipchart, students wrote a story about a Haunted House. Please enjoy the following, amazing stories written by grade 1 students! Can you believe how wonderful they are? At only 7 years old, they are certainly budding authors!! The Haunted House. By Harrison S. I was standing in front of a damp old house that had rusted, old gates. It had gravestones in the front yard and it had broken stairs. There were twisted dead trees and a broken front door. I open a tiny bit of the door, there was no one in there, but there was a large fire in the next room and thick cobwebs. I could hear whispers that sounded like a ghost’s. I felt shivers down my back. The stairs scared me. I walked very, very slowly, but the wooden floors creaked no matter how softly I walked. I started to go up the dusty stairs. When I was half way, I slipped. Luckily, I caught hold of the railing. I went the rest of the way up. There was a mysterious, rotting, red door. It had a big lock. I heard muffled voices and a crackling fire, that’s what I thought it was. I smelt rotten food and I smelt melting wax. I pushed the door. It fell open, I saw a large table. On it, was a lantern – that’s what it was! The door had wax running down the side. Then some kind of monster was cooking rotten soup in there. The monster put his clawed hand out and pulled me down. The Haunted House by Ben Q Whenever I was walking along the street, I always saw this creepy house surrounded by twisted trees. In the sky, there was a full moon. I pushed the rusty old gate and walked up the thin stairs. I opened the wooden door and heard cackling. I saw torches lighting up and footprints going up the stairs. I was nervous. Then I finally had enough courage to go further. I saw a staircase, I walked up halfway…I tripped over. I saw a curved door that had a lock. I didn’t know if it was unlocked or locked. I heard muffled voices. Finally, I reached both of my hands out and pushed the door, but it wouldn’t budge, so I kicked the door open. I saw an empty table, then I felt cold hands behind me. The cold hands turned me into a ghost!

The Haunted House by Jack C.

I was walking through a forest. I came to a spooky house. I had walked past it a hundred times; it always gave me the creeps. It had an open window with a light on the top floor. It had dead trees all around with branches like witch’s fingers. The clouds were like a cyclone. I opened the iron-gate and walked cautiously to the front door. I put my hand on the old, rusty, iron doorknob. It creaked most terribly, a bit of wood fell; I stepped in, then…slam! A door! I said to myself, “Someone is here.” I looked further into the room, I felt guilty. I saw an old narrow, winding staircase. I saw a light in a room. I heard a fire crackling upstairs. I walked across the brown stones, I came to the staircase. I stopped at the bottom and looked around. The stairs were made of wood; there were old-fashioned lanterns everywhere. I walked up the wooden stairs; there were hole everywhere that made me mindful. At last there were no more holes. I stepped on a floorboard that seemed normal, it broke. I reached a part where I had to choose right or left. I chose left. I walked up the crumbling stairs. When I took a step, stone crumbled and smashed to the bottom. There was a pool of magma at the bottom. At last I reached the top. I saw an old creaky wooden door. There was mist creeping out underneath. Through all the mist I saw a ghost and smelled something rotting. I heard cackling as well. I saw two witches talking and I saw a fire and rotting soup. The door shut behind me. Following on from narratives, Level 2 will be writing different forms of poetry over the next few weeks. What better way to start, than to look up at the sky and watch the clouds?! Imaginations can run wild with creative ideas! Please enjoy the following poems, titled ‘Clouds’. I laid on my back I can see white, I can see blue. I can see a dragon. CAMP QUALITY INCURSION

Laughter Is The Best Medicine. I learnt that all your hair falls out from chemotherapy. Today Level 1 and 2 watched Camp Quality. Camp Quality tells us about cancer and uses puppets to make a show. Georgia B. Zahlia thanked the people from Camp Quality for teaching us about the effects of cancer, and how we can help people with cancer stay positive! Did you know you can’t catch cancer? Today I watched a puppet show in the stadium. The puppets’ names were Kylie and Dean. Mackenzie B Today we went to the stadium because there was a puppet show and their names were Dean and Kylie. I thought they were creative. The words that they used were – side effects, positive, chemotherapy. Ben Q.

YEAR 2 SLEEPOVER The Level 2 Team would like to thank all the parent helpers who attend the BBQ and early breakfast, and assisted in the Library packing up the bedding and sleeping bags. We all had a wonderful time and appreciated your support leading up to the event and on the day. Level 2 Team: Jan L, Stuart Mc, Fiona S, Lyse C, Karen K, Sandy D and Kyle B.

More stories from Grade 2 Sleepover….

Jalen

On Friday night the grade twos had their grade 2 sleepover. For dinner we had sausages ,burgers and juice,

yummy yummy. After dinner we had some very fun activities like a relay race, jumping bags, hamster wheel,

parachute, tug of war, and ball octopus. My favourite activity was the hamster wheel. The hamster wheel is an

inflatable hamster wheel. Inside the hamster wheel you have to run and push with your hands. When you push and

run in the hamster wheel the teacher for the activity will time you. My time was 10 seconds and mine was one of

the best times.

Tate

We had lots of games and my favourite game was the Hamster wheel and Bean Bag Tiggy. I loved it and I was

tired. The others are Parachute, relay races and tug of war. In the hamster wheel you run inside it and you push at

the same time. I got 13.53. IT WAS AWESOME!!! We had sausages, burgers and juice it was yummy in my tummy.

We also went for a night walk in the urban forest and i found 1 possum. We saw a movie. It was called

“Chimpmonks Around The World” I loved it. It was the best day ever.

On Friday night the grade twos had there grade 2 sleepover. My highlight of the night was tug of war.The rope

gave me rope burn. After that we watched a movie called chipmunks and the chipets. While we were watching the

movie we had a packet of chips each and a chocolate cupcake. We went to bed at 10:34.

Jack

My favourite bit was doing the hamster wheel and tug of war. I lost. On the hamster wheel, we had to run in the

hamster wheel and there. It was timed. We did beanbag tiggy and i got 6 in the bucket. We did activities and then

we went to sleep. We had so much fun. Then we woke up and we had breakfast and all of our parents picked us up

and I had so MUCH FUN.

Lockie

On Friday night the grade twos had a sleepover. For dinner we had sausages, burgers and juice. Then we did

some activities: the hamster wheel and tug of war. The hamster wheel was my favourite thing because it’s a wheel

that you go in and roll over in the wheel. We slept in the library. I slept next to Tate and Brandon. In the morning

our parents picked us up and we all went home. It was SO FUN.

We went on a night walk then we went back to the 5/ 6 area to watch the movie. After that, we went to bed, I was

next to Lockie. Friday night was the best.

FAIRY TALE FIASCO

On Friday 17th October we had a Fairy Tale Fiasco!!! We got to dress up in lots of different costumes and act out a story about Fairy Tale Land. The land was all mixed up and there was a problem. The children worked together in their characters to solve the problem. Everyone got involved and had so much fun. Here is what Prep M wrote about the day: Wow! Today I did a Fairy Tale. I loved it. We went through a magic tunnel. I dressed up into a wicked witch and I was invisible and I touched the Princess Fairy. I dressed up into a dragon. This was awesome. I did a magic spell. The bad pigs came to every house and there were 4 houses and I couldn’t wait until the Fairy Tale. The Princess Fairy had a wand and we had to be quiet. It was a pretend dream. It was so fun today. Everyone loved today. By Lily Today was so, so, so much fun! Did you have fun? I was a wizard and a cat! What were you? I held the tunnel. The wizard costume had rainbow spots! The cat costume had grey ears and it was black. By Chloe Today was so much fun! I dressed up as a dwarf. The dwarf had a beard. The colour was white. What did you dress up as? 2015 TEAM VIC STATE TRIATHLON TEAM TRIAL PROCESS: Students wishing to be considered for selection

for SSV's 2015 Triathlon team may now register their interest and view the selection guidelines via the SSV

website. Nominations close on Friday, December 5 2014. It is anticipated that the 2015 School Sport Australia

Boys and Girls Triathlon Championship will be held in New South Wales. The exact venue and dates are yet to be

confirmed but it is likely the dates will be in early April as in the past. More information on national events can be

found at the Team Vic page on the School Sport Victoria website or the School Sport Australia website.

OSHClub News Before School / After School Care Program Week 2 - Term 4 – 2014 (13 – 17 October)

Program Update Hello everyone! The year is disappearing very quickly and so far for this term at OSHclub we have been very busy. We have just been notified that we will be going through an assessment process shortly which will mean our program will see some positive changes. I would really like to say thanks to all the children that are helping this process run smoothly and are coming up with lots of ideas on how we can make their room look great. Next week is Halloween and we will be doing lots of activities that will be lots of fun. Healthy Eating has been our goal for the week and we have been enjoying lots of fresh fruit and vegetables along with rice dishes, corn on the cob, dips and rice crackers. We are starting some multi-cultural activities also this week and will continue throughout the year adding to these. Kalli is back from her holidays next week and will be really excited to start work again and help with our preparation for our assessment visit. Bookings for next year will be available soon and I would like to extend an invitation to all parents with children at the school or coming to the school to drop by one morning or afternoon and see what things we do. BE SUNSMART IN TERM 4

Here at Kalinda we are a Sunsmart school which means that all students need to wear a school-approved hat during Term 4, which can be purchased at the Uniform Shop on Monday afternoons from 3.00 – 3.45pm. If anyone is not wearing a hat, the Yard Duty Teacher will ask them to stay undercover, out of the sun, for recess and/or lunchtime.

KALINDA KAFÉ….

It’s a great place to get together every Monday morning after assembly in the Stadium Foyer for a chat, and a cake and cuppa

(gold coin donation please).
