Ceremony of Remembrance and Renewal March 28, 2013

The Ceremony of Remembrance and Renewal is not a religious ceremony. In this ceremony, we remember those who have journeyed on to the Celestial Lodge, and we renew our commitment to our own life’s journey.

During this ceremony, we hear the names of our departed Brethren. These individuals are our Brothers with whom we have shared the beauty and grandeur of Masonry. The reading of these names is reminiscent of an ancient Sanskrit injunction: “Lead us from the unreal to the real, from darkness to light, from death to immortality.” As Masons, we are traveling together on a mystic journey, a journey toward greater and greater light. The Ceremony of Remembrance and Renewal is a celebration of our Masonic bonds, an opportunity to remember our Brothers who have journeyed on before us, and a time to reflect upon our own individual quest.

Though the Ceremony is related to Scottish Rite of Freemasonry, it is a public ceremony and all Masons, their ladies, and guests are invited to attend.

Personal Rep’s Message

By Illustrious Brother J. Michael Atchley, 33°, G.·.C.·.

Thank you to all our members who contributed to the air conditioning fund.

Your donations totaled $17,229.00.

The contractors have installed the new air conditioner and heat pump and they are now working on upgrading the electrical system.

Our next big project which would improve our Cathedral, is participation by all of you. Our Cathedral is being restored to its original beauty which made it the gathering place in downtown Tucson in its early days. It is once again becoming the gathering place for the people of Tucson. Our Special Events have brought Masonry in Tucson to the forefront with the number of inquiries sky-rocketing as to who and what we Masons are. The number of Petitions and Affiliations are at their highest level in years. Now it is up to all of us to take a more active role in helping Masonry grow. There are an abundant number of jobs available to make new members feel welcome. We need to be there and set the example so others will follow. The more who are in-volved, the easier the job becomes. With the exciting calendar for this year, it is not the same old thing—you would be surprised. This year we celebrate 130 years of Scottish Rite Freemasonry in Tucson. Let’s make it the best anniversary Scottish Rite has ever had. Visit the Cathe-dral, join your brothers for dinner; sponsor a candidate; participate in the Reunions; become active. Be a part of the team which will lead the Scottish Rite toward the 100th anniversary of our Cathedral in December, 2015.

“From what we get, we can make a living; what we give, however, makes a life.—Arthur Ashe”

Let me begin by saying “Happy New Year” to all of you and your families. As the years pass we find our-selves with new opportunities. We then make the decision to take advantage of these new ventures or ignore them. The one thing I have found in Masonry is that there is a place for each and every one of us. We all have our individual talents and it can be so rewarding to utilize them to the benefit of our Fraternity.

The Spring Reunion will be upon us before we know it. The Degree Directors are putting their casts together and rehearsals will be starting soon. Spring Reunion dates are May 3rd and 4th. Brethren from all over the State of Arizona converge upon the Valley of Tucson Scottish Rite to make our newest members welcome and enlighten them to the history and possibilities which await them in our Fraternity. If you are not currently a participant in the production of these Degrees, I encourage you to call the Scottish Rite office and we will help you start a rewarding adventure. It really is fun!

Plans are in the making for a couple new ceremonies to be presented this year so we hope you can attend our Stated Meetings. 2013 is going to be a great year!

G reetings from the Tucson Knights of St. Andrew. January, was a very busy month with the

Installation of Officers and our annual Robert Burns Dinner. I would like to thank Ill.·. Robert F. Hannon, 33º, S.·.G.·.I.·.G.·. for the great Installation of the Knights of St. Andrew Officers and everyone who helped with the Installation. Our Robert Burns Dinner was a great event, well attended and everyone seemed to enjoy the Haggis and the Irish dancers. I would like to thank the Arizona Chapter of DeMolay for helping serve the dinner and cleaning up Atchley Hall. We hope to see more of you next year. The date has already been set for January 24, 2014. Please mark your calendar and join us. The Phoenix Knights of St. Andrew has asked to help us with the 29th Degree at the Spring Reunion so we hope you will see many new faces. We are always looking for new Scottish Rite members to join the Knights of St. Andrew. All you need to do is ask any one of us and we will be more than happy to help you.

W hat a surprise! At the January Stated Meeting, I was stunned and proud to be awarded the

Sovereign Grand Inspector General, Robert F. Hannon Achievement Award. It was for work on a video extolling the Tucson Scottish Rite Cathedral. I wrote the script for the video, hosted and narrated it, but I was far from the only one involved in the project. The idea for the video came from Peggy Atchley and the shooting and production were the work of a very talented team, Beyond Video, LLC. The video will be posted on our website, www.TucsonScottishRite.org, for all to see. The purpose is to demonstrate to potential rental clients the many attractive features of our historic building...things which might induce them to want to hold their meeting or event at the Rite, and thus, help raise money to care for and improve our precious home. If it is successful in that quest, I will be more than satisfied. The next quest I have before me is the coming May Reunion and here too, I am not alone. You and every Brother in every Blue Lodge will, I’m sure, be working to tell the story of The Ancient and Accepted Scottish Rite to each new Master Mason. Every Brother needs to find the perfect quarry in which to work...and we need to make sure they understand the work we do here, the value and fun to be had. I know this is the perfect place for me and I hope to show many others how right the Rite would be for them.

Bro.·. Gilbert A. Schlierer, 32º,

Membership Director

Tucson Spring Reunion May 3 and 4, 2013

W hen we think we are too busy to do any more in the Fraternity, take a look at this Brother:

Jeffrey Robert Horton

became a Scottish Rite Mason during the 1983 Fall Reunion and started working in the Degrees. He also found time to serve Marion McDaniel Lodge #56 as its Worshipful Master in 1990; served as Worshipful Master of San Pedro Lodge #55 in beautiful downtown Benson in 1994. His Masonic work did not finish there. He became active in Eastern Star, serving as Worthy Patron several times; joined the York Rite and soon was serving in all three Bodies as an officer which led to his election as Grand Principle Sojourner in the Grand Chapter, Royal Arch Masons; and is serving as Puissant Sovereign of his Red Cross Conclave. Jeff now has been elected Potentate of Sabbar Shrine, duly installed and working daily to improve Shrinedom in Southern Arizona and yet, he still has time for us at Scottish Rite. This shows a man can multitask! Jeff Horton is a Mason well worthy of imitation!

Congratulations, Brother Jeff!

Is It “QUWAH” or “C-ROY”?

The question has been asked: what is the proper pronunciation of Croix, as in Rose Croix. The real answer depends on how French you want to be. Since the Degrees of Rose Croix came from France, you might reason that it would make sense to pronounce the word as the French do: ie. Qu-wah. There are plenty of examples including the famed military decoration, the Croix de Guerre (the Cross of War), retired Canadian pro hockey player Andre Lecroix, the area of Croix de Nord in France: all pronounced Qu-wah.

Just when you’ve decided that is the way to pronounce the word — consider the island in the U.S. Virgin Islands—St. Croix, or the river in Minnesota, the St. Croix, both pronounced C-roy to rhyme with toy. In fact, all English references to the word call for C-roy.

So, do you want to be French or do you want to be English? It seems that’s the choice. By the way, if you vote for the Gallic, you will then be confronted with the proper pronunciation of “Rose” in French: a much more difficult matter than Croix, believe me.
