The stretch of two-way champs has taken a detour, landing the coveted trophy into the arms of Ananya Vinay who proved to be indomitable at the 2017 National Spelling Bee. Three years ago was the last time a single winner was declared and Ananya managed to ‘out spell’ numerous contestants—all to be celebrated for making it to the national stage. Rohan Rajeev was a tenacious competitor and came in second-place, spelling words like durchkomponiert, potichimanie, and cheiropompholyx. Ananya fielded words like cuivré, tasajillo, and Tchefuncte to name a few. In its 90th year, the Spelling Bee instituted a tie-breaker for the first time. It would have used a ‘secret envelope’ to declare the speller with the highest written score the winner if, once again, two were left standing on stage. Before the live finals on ESPN, Paige Kimble joked that they were prepared this time, not just for the possibility of two, but even three winners as three trophies traversed across the stage. A little humor before a tense night is always wel-come, and the thought of a three-way tie tickled the audience. (Continued on page 3)

After a two-day, 36-round spelling bee and a 20-round nail-biting spell-off, no envelope was needed and Ananya and Rohan Rajeev ended the event only five rounds short of a tie. Each took home $40,000 and $30,000 respec-tively; the prize for third place was $20,000, and fourth place was $10,000. When Ananya competed at the NSB last year as a fifth grader, she fell short of the semifinals, but in only one year, she proved unshrinkable. Her victory is a living testimony to hard work and determination. It is also rare and impressive to come as far as Rohan did as a first-time competitor at the National Spelling Bee. Mira Dedhia was the third-place winner and she fielded words like euphroe, phycoerythrin, and phycoery-thrin. Her mother competed in the 1988-1990 National Spelling Bees around the same time Hexco’s Spelling Sisters competed at the NSB. Owner Linda Tarrant was excited to see Mira on stage, a second-generation competitor, success-fully reaching the highest rungs of the Bee. Those who watched the Bee live as well as on ESPN, noted a rise in determination in Ananya’s countenance following Shourav Desari's now infamous ‘mic drop’ word, mogollon, which had the live audience shocked, yet cheer-ing and laughing. Spellers are always encouraged to repeat the word and ask for alternate information to be sure they heard the word correctly. Luckily, he nailed it anyway, and in all fairness, many spellers often know the correct spell-ing as soon as they hear a word. Shourav fielded many dif-ficult words, including coulisse, oncochaeta, and aepyornis and finished in 4th place. He came in 11th place in 2016. He missed Struldbrug, a word which means an imaginary class of people who can never die and has its origins in the book Gulliver’s Travels. After two rounds of spelling live onstage on Wednesday, only those who did not miss their word were given the chance to get ranked by their written round score and move on to the first part of the finals. The 40 spellers who moved on to the finals (formerly called the semifinals) had to receive a minimum score of 29; the highest possible score was a 30. Fifteen spellers took the stage at the ESPN finals on Thursday night. There were nine 8th graders, zero 7th graders, five 6th graders, and one 5th grader. Congratulations to Ananya and all who made it to the Nationals and to those who made it to Regionals last year, even if you did not make it to Nationals! Many of the following words were used in Round 2 (first oral spelling round) of the National Spelling Bee and many were first used at Regional Spelling Bees. This list was not available until all of the Regional Spelling Bees had ended. In early April (about 50 days before the NSB), contestants were provided this list of words inside their speller accounts at spellingbee.com.

Speller's Love of Learning Lives On In my eighth-grade school year (the school year of 2016-2017), I got the amazing opportunity to go to the Scripps National Spelling Bee that took place in Wash-ington, D.C. It was one of the greatest experiences of my life. Not because I got to go to a national competition for the first time—although that made the trip even more awesome. I enjoyed the Scripps National Spelling Bee because it exposed me to a whole new world—a world full of words.

In March of 2017, I placed first in my region’s spelling bee after winning my school’s spelling bee. It was my first time mak-ing it past my school’s spelling bee, so when I went online and searched for videos of past Scripps champions and their performances, I was seriously overwhelmed. Almost all the words that they had to spell were words that I had never even heard before. I didn’t know much about the English language before I participated in the Scripps bee. I tried my best to find resources that could help me out, but I doubted that they would prepare me. That’s when my parents found a flyer for Hexco’s Spelling Crash Course, and of course, I really wanted to enroll. Boy, I will be forever glad that I enrolled in the Spelling Crash Course. It was like having an extra class after school, complete with a teacher and other classmates, only this class was completely devoted to spelling and vocabulary. Every week we would learn patterns specific to a single language and learn around 300 words that came from the language. We would also learn a lot of extra random words every week too. It was around six weeks long, and there was so much to cover. But I enjoyed getting through all of the material! Hexco’s Crash Course exposed me to so much knowledge about all kinds of notes. This was exposure that I took full advantage of. One thing that I ended up doing was writing down words that I found difficult onto index cards, and I hung them up on the walls of my room. The week before the spelling bee, there was barely any space left on my walls and ceiling. I’m so grateful for all of the things I was able to learn through my Crash Course mentor and through the program. I ended up placing 41st at the Scripps National Spelling Bee, which I guess was pretty good for my very first time being in the competition. I ended up not caring too much about my performance at the bee; I was just glad that I ended up learning so much on the way. What I love about my experience with Hexco is that once you learn the word—you’ll probably not forget it. Weeks and weeks later, I’m seeing words that I learned in the program pop up everywhere. I have an expanded vocabulary and thanks to Hexco, all sorts of ordinary objects now have new names for me. The simple word red now becomes coquelicot, sanguineous, ponceau, and modena. When my family went to the Bronx Zoo, l recognized the ‘capercaillie’ (a large member of the grouse family, a type of bird) and immediately remembered the origin of its name has Irish and Scottish roots. A while ago, my family received a box in the mail. It was packaged with excelsior, or in other words, small wood shavings people sometimes use to package stuff. I’ve scored way higher on vocabulary sections on standardized tests than I ever have before. Even after the bee I still look in my dictionary for new words. In the words of a champion"My Hexco Experience" by Ananya Vinay, 2017 Scripps National Spelling Bee Champion

I had a great experience with Hexco during my spelling journey. The spelling books Hexco provided were a great word base for me to learn from. Verbomania helped me to improve my vocabulary skills, and I greatly benefited from it. New Nat’s Notes taught me a lot of bee worthy words of medium difficulty. I used Blitz, which taught me lots of more dif-ficult and tricky words to help prepare me for the national level. The words in all these lists are carefully chosen, and you find a lot of them at the bees. Overall, Hexco has lots of great resources to help you prepare for the regional and national level.

I got to use the eMentors as part of the PSC (Personal Spelling Coaching). They were one of the most helpful items to study on. I could study words of different languages, new words, geographical words, and other types of lists. It really improved my variety of word knowl-edge throughout the past year. Another thing I really liked about the eMentors was that it was easy to efficiently study by starring your doubts and reviewing your mistakes. They also had a lot of tricky words that I learned as I did the eMentors. They were very beneficial to my learning.

Also, personal coaching was a really fun and amazing experience. My coach, Michelle Horton, was very nice, friendly, and supportive to me as the year went on. As I improved,

she would dig deeper into the dictionary to find me harder words and challenge me. She even made special eMentors just for me to learn words. It was really nice of her to do that just for me when she had many other students. The quizzing sessions taught me a lot of bizarre words I would not have known otherwise. It was really interesting to see all those strange words that were so tricky to spell. The detailed notes that I receive after every session delved deeper into the word and related words. Mrs. Horton was a great motivator, and when she told me that I could actually win the spelling bee this year, that did wonders for my confidence! Studying with Hexco was a unique and enjoyable experience. It provided many resources to help me study. Personal coaching was also really fun and educational for me to do. The whole experience was really amazing, and I know that I wouldn’t have won the Scripps National Spelling Bee without the Hexco experience.
