As chair of UEC, S. Pattridge has been asked to provide APPC with a written report of UEC’s activities on a monthly basis. There was some discussion regarding what this report should include, and whether the meeting minutes might be sufficient on their own, or at least included as part of the report. Initially, APPC should be given a summary of the items UPAC has approved in the past year. A. Grimson can also provide data on the number of proposals that have come through UPAC in previous years.

6. ADJOURNMENT The meeting was adjourned at 10:24 am.

MEMORANDUM

SUBJECT: English /Communications requirement for the Bachelor of Science

The Faculty of Science requests approval of a change to the english/communications requirement for the Bachelor of Science. RATIONALE: Students who transfer in credit to UFV are often awarded general English credit (ENG 1xx). According to the English department head, when transfer credit is awarded the course is generally at least equivalent to Eng 105. Rather than having to make exceptions to the English/communication graduation requirement for transfer students, the faculty has chosen to change the requirement to include any English course 100 or above. CURRENT REQUIREMENT: 6. Two courses selected from the following: - any ENGL courses numbered 105 or above - CMNS 155 - any CMNS course numbered 235 or above REQUESTED CHANGE: 6. Any two courses from the following: university-level ENGL, CMNS 155, or any CMNS course numbered 235 or above. The final motion was made and approved at the January 7th faculty council meeting. This change also has Dean's approval. This change was discussed at length at curriculum committee both on November 19 and December 17. The Faculty of Science requests that this change take effect in September 2011.

M E M O R A N D U M TO: BA Program Committee, Arts Faculty Curriculum Committee FROM: Joanne Bishop, Director, Arts Advice Centre DATE: January 8, 2011 SUBJECT: Proposed Changes to AA Admissions Requirements for Discussion ______________________________________________________________________ I have received a request from Nancy Merritt, International Education, to align the Associate of Arts degree admission requirements with the Out of Country, High School entrance to the Bachelor of Arts degree. She has provided a rationale in her memo dated December 8, 2010. When changes were made to the BA admissions requirements in 2008/09, International Students did not apply to the Associate of Arts degree program and therefore, the entrance requirements were not amended to reflect out of country applicants. I support the International Education office request to add the Out of Country Applicants paragraph to the Option 1 Associate of Arts degree entrance requirements. Current 2010/2011 Associate of Arts entrance requirements: Option 1: High school (for students with high school graduation only) 1. B.C. Secondary school graduation or equivalent. 2. A minimum of a B average in English 12 and two other Grade 12 courses that offer a provincial exam (mandatory or optional). Option 2: University entrance (for students who have attended some post-secondary school) 1. Minimum of nine university-level credits completed with a cumulative GPA of 2.0 based on all university-level credits attempted. 2. Applicants must satisfy English language policy. For details on how this requirement may be met, see English language policy 340.29. Students who do not meet these requirements might consider the Arts Studies program path. Recommended AA Admissions Changes: Option 1: High school (for students with high school graduation only) 1. B.C. Secondary school graduation or equivalent. 2. A minimum of a B average in English 12 and two other Grade 12 courses that offer a provincial exam (mandatory or optional). ADD: 3. Out-of-country applicants - Students who have BC secondary school graduation equivalency, meet the prerequisite for ENGL 105 or CMNS 155, and have completed an equivalent average of B (equated to the UFV grading system) in three academic Grade 12 subjects will be admissible.

Re:

Currently, UFV’s (draft 2011-12) calendar does not specify how an out of country applicant can demonstrate admissibility to the Associate of Arts degrees. It is essential to provide this information for potential students, advisors, faculty and staff; therefore, we would like to request that the Bachelor of Arts Out of Country Applicants paragraph be added to Option 1 under the Associate of Arts degrees entrance requirements.

CIS Certificate: Web Design and Animation Option, Program change Description: The CIS department would like to change the program requirements for the CIS/COMP and VA/GD requirements. Rationale: Students are not able to complete the CIS certificate - Web design and Animation option because of the extreme difficulty they have registering in the required courses for this program (see page 90-91 in the 2011/11 Calendar). Our suggestion is to add more course options to two of the requirement sections regarding the CIS/COMP and VA/GD courses. This will give students more flexibilty to complete this program because more course choices will have been made available to them. The program outline in the calendar would then state: Two appropriate CIS/COMP courses related to web design and animation: CIS 145, CIS 146, CIS 160, CIS 162, CIS 165, CIS 185 (or COMP 150 or COMP 180), CIS 245 and CIS 262. Four appropriate VA/GD/CMNS courses related to web design and animation: VA 180, VA117, VA 160, GD 157, GD 158, GD 161, GD 201, GD 215, GC 216, GD 231, GD 258, and CMNS 375.

Please see proposed changes attached.

Desired Implementation Date: September 2011

RE: Background information: Floral Design certificate transfer credit

At the Pre-UPAC consultation stage, there was some discussion regarding the original approval of transfer credits from the Floral Design certificate to the Horticulture program. Transfer credit for CS programs is normally approved by the Academic Standards Committee (ASC), but as this appears to have been approved by PAC rather than ASC, it seems appropriate that it come to UPAC for information and/or approval.

The original proposal approved by PAC in March 2000 included the following:

In consultation with the Director of Agriculture we have worked out a transfer of approximately six credits from the C.E. Floral Certificate to the Horticulture Program. As there is no flora-culture component in the Horticulture program, this possibility could be appealing to a number of students.

The proposal also includes a section titled “Potential laddering/transfer/prior learning assessments with other certificate/diploma/degree programs”, which states:

The Director of Agriculture, Norma Senn, has the intention to assign six credits in the Horticulture program for students completing the Floral Design Certificate program.

Although there appears to have been a fair bit of discussion at PAC when the program was approved, the transfer to the Horticulture program does not appear to have been discussed. For more information, please see the April and May 2000 PAC minutes:
