MEMORANDUM

TO: Pre-UPAC FROM: Nancy Goad, BSN program and Janine Brown, Practical Nursing program DATE: November 30, 2010 RE: Math Prerequisites Recently, there have been significant changes to the high school math curriculum. The changes result in an entirely different program of math studies in high school starting with the grade 10 program. At the present time both the BSN and PN programs have a math prerequisite for entry into the program. It is currently Principles of Math 11 or Math 085. After consultation with the math department and with the approval of the curriculum committee in the respective program, the following are proposed to be added as prerequisites for both programs: Grade 11 Foundations of Mathematics OR Grade 11 Pre-calculus. The calendar would be adjusted as indicated below. BSN Academic entrance requirerments Math 11 (Principles of Math 11 or Foundations of Math 11 or Pre-calculus 11) or UFV Math 085 with a minimum of a C+ grade. PN Academic entrance requirerments Math 11 (Principles of Math 11 or Foundations of Math 11 or Pre-calculus 11) or equivalent (Math 085) with a minimum of C grade. Both programs are seeking approval from PAC for the changes to the math prerequisites to the program.

MEMORAMDUM

To: Faculty of Science Curriculum Committee From: Ken Brealey, Geography Department Date: October 21, 2010 Subject: Proposed Change: BSc Entrance Requirements – Option 2 University Entrance BSc Entrance Requirements – Option 2 University Entrance Rationale: Changes (detailed below) are proposed for the BSc Entrance Requirements – Option 2 University Entrance for the following reasons:

The current university entrance requirements for students seeking entrance into the Bachelor of Science degree recognize relevant high school courses in addition to college prep and first year university courses in a variety of disciplines. In the case of Geography, only Geography 12 is currently available as an option for BSc university entrance. The addition of GEOG 101 and GEOG 102 to this list will allow students with first year Geography courses to gain entrance more easily into the program and in a more timely fashion. Further it will increase options for all students currently interested in entering the BSc degree program at UFV.

Current BSc Entrance Requirements for Option 2 point 5:

One course, chosen from the following disciplines, with a minimum grade of C+: • Biology: Biology 12, BIO 093, or BIO 111 • Chemistry: Chemistry 12, CHEM 093, CHEM 110, or CHEM 113 • Geography: Geography 12 • Physics: Physics 12, PHYS 093, PHYS 100, PHYS 101, PHYS 105, or PHYS 111

Proposed BSc Entrance Requirements for Option 2 point 5 (change in bold):

One course, chosen from the following disciplines, with a minimum grade of C+: • Biology: Biology 12, BIO 093, or BIO 111 • Chemistry: Chemistry 12, CHEM 093, CHEM 110, or CHEM 113 • Geography: Geography 12, • Physics: Physics 12, PHYS 093, PHYS 100, PHYS 101, PHYS 105, or PHYS 111

Re:

• Removal of GEOG 352 from the BA Geography degree program requirements

Proposal:

• Addition of GEOG 252 to the BA Geography degree program requirements

1. Proposal:

In the course of curriculum mapping, and to the degree that lowering Geog 352 to 252 changes the lower and upper level requirements in every program in which it is found, Geography is proposing the following changes, where required, to its standing majors and minors in the BA programs. The important point is that in each case, four credits are being transferred from the upper level to the lower level requirement. To meet the BA major requirement of a minimum of 30 upper-level credits in the chosen major, an additional upper-level Geography elective has been added to programs that would fall below 30 upper-level Geography credits with the removal of GEOG 352.

2. Proposed changes to the BA Geography programs:

Re:

• Removal of GEOG 352 BSc Geography degree program requirements

Proposal:

• Addition of GEOG 252 BSc Geography degree program requirements

1. Proposal:

In the course of curriculum mapping, and to the degree that lowering Geog 352 to 252 changes the lower and upper level requirements in every program in which it is found, Geography is proposing the following changes, where required, to its standing majors and minors in the BSc programs. The important point is that in each case, four credits are being transferred from the upper level to the lower level requirement. As noted in the rationale for the course change, this will add more credits to the lower level, but compensate by removing four credits from the upper. Overall, there is no change in terms of the total number of credits or courses required to complete any one degree. The resulting balance between the lower and upper level is consistent with the fact that Geography is a techniques intensive discipline, and in no case is inconsistent with other lower and upper level requirements in comparable disciplines at this university.

2. Proposed changes to the Geography programs:

Addition of the Media and Communication Studies extended minor to the Bachelor of Arts

The Media and Communication Studies extended minor is being proposed as an addition to the Bachelor of Arts degree.

The MACS extended minor was developed in the context of the expansion of the Bachelor of Fine Arts, and it will become part of the BFA, contingent upon its being approved by DQAB. The MACS extended minor is also a suitable option for the Bachelor of Arts, as an alternative for students wanting a more in-depth exposure to MACS than is currently provided within the BA by the MACS minor.

Joanne Bishop, Director of the Arts Advice Centre, has reviewed this proposal and has given her support to it.

Bachelor of Arts Calendar Copy Changes 2011/12: Addition of Media and Communication Studies Extended Minor

Extended minors

Students wishing to concentrate on two subject areas can earn a Bachelor of Arts degree by completing two extended minors. UFV offers extended minors in:

• Biology (applicable only to BA degree) • Computer Information Systems • Criminal Justice • English • French • Geography • History • Latin American Studies • Mathematics • Mathematics (Statistics option) • Media and Communication Studies • Psychology • Theatre • Visual Arts

Any two of these areas can be combined except mathematics with mathematics/statistics.

An extended minor consists of the 100- and 200-level credits required for a major as well as the 300- and 400-level credits equivalent to a minor in the same discipline.
