“There wasn’t a single moment that I didn’t enjoy while in Cambodia! From racing through Siem Reap in a tuk tuk to almost being trampled by children rushing up to hug you,

Cambodia was truly unforgettable. It was so different from Australia: people have it so much harder yet their smiles are so much bigger. By the end of it, Cambodia felt like home.”

THE EXPERIENCEDay 1: The adventure beginsTravel to Siem Reap, departing Brisbane or Melbourne. On arrival our hosts from Feeding Dreams will pick us up and deliver us to our hotel. There we spend the evening relaxing, settling in and getting to know each other.

Day 2: Explore the ancient temples of AngkorToday we visit the world heritage listed Angkor Wat, Bayon and Ta Prohm Temples in the Angkor Wat Archaeological park. You may recognise the iconic Ta Prohm temple from the movie Tomb Raider.

In the evening we will be treated to a Cambodian BBQ at our hotel. Enjoy typical Khmer taste sensations and exotic grilled meats of snake, crickets, eel, crocodile and sparrow (for those who dare!) Chicken and beef will be provided for the less adventurous.

Day 3: Meet The Students This morning we familiarise ourselves with Siem Reap on a Village Tour via Tuk Tuk. Afterwards we head to school to get to know the staff and students at Feeding Dreams Community School.

On arrival we will have an induction to get to know the staff we’ll be working with for the week. Afterwards we will attend the school assembly to meet the students whom will leave an imprint on our hearts. It is here that we will begin our gratifying week volunteering as support teachers in English or Math classes. Don’t worry, the local Khmer teachers are fabulous and will guide you into assisting and becoming involved with the students.

After our first day working with the kids, we will spend the evening exploring the city’s night markets. Treat yourself to a $3 oil foot massage or shop for unique, locally made trinkets before we dine for a cause, eating dinner at one of the local NGO cafes.

“From all accounts, the Help Out Adventure was extraordinary! My daughter said she didn’t have the words to describe her experience, other than to say it was the most amazing and life changing experience of her life. For a student just finishing high school with all the “first world” problems of a typical teen, Help Out was an eye-opening experience filled with

cultural diversity, charity and fun.”Leisa - Parent, QLD

Day 4: Float along Tonle Sap LakeThis morning we take a leisurely longboat trip on Tonle Sap Lake, the largest inland lake in South East Asia, and visit the floating villages. Spend your time learning about the differing Khmer and Vietnamese floating households and discover the ways of the local fishing families. You can even make your way to the local markets to check out the fresh produce or wander through the local floating schools and clinics.

During the afternoon we will volunteer in the classroom and help the cook distribute meals to the students. In many cases, this is the only proper meal they will eat each day. The Feeding Dreams ‘school meals program’ aims to decrease malnutrition, risk of disease and help achieve universal primary education. This is a chance for you to participate in a life changing program and make an impact on the future of Cambodia.

Day 5: Fly Across the forestGet ready for an adventure today as we spend our morning aboard the Angkor Zipline - home of the biggest and scariest zip-line in Asia. You will soar across the majestic rainforests in the Angkor Wat Archaeological park on 8 different thrilling zip-lines. Traverse across suspended sky bridges that span for hundreds of meters and test your skills as you abseil from towering trees up to 50m tall!

Although the Angkor Zipline is a lot of fun, safety is still the highest priority. All participants will be personally outfitted in the proper safety gear and receive a briefing by one of the experienced sky rangers before they venture into the park. The team of experts have over 20 years of experience, so there is absolutely no reason to worry.

Following a morning of adventure, we will return to our classes for an afternoon of teaching. You may even get the chance to distribute some sports equipment today and join in playing traditional Cambodian games. If you’re up for the challenge, teach the students some of our famous Aussie sports we play back home - hand ball, stuck in the mud or even a game of cricket!

Day 7: Farewell to the students This morning we will visit the Outdoor War Museum to gain an insight into Cambodia’s turbulent past. You will hear stories from victims of these times as they show you around the museum. From here we will venture to West Baray, the largest man-made lake in the world, and enjoy a leisurely swim before we try some of the local delicacies at the surrounding food stalls. In the afternoon we will put our sporting skills to the test, competing in a soccer match against the students. We end the day with a farewell assembly and an emotional goodbye to the children.

For our final night together we will experience a taste of classical Khmer culture, enjoying a spectacular buffet dinner and Apsara dance performance. It has been a tradition since the earliest days of tourism to treat visitors of Siem Reap to an Apsara dance show.

Day 8: Australia CallingAfter some free time exploring the local markets we will depart Siem Reap for our return flight to Australia. Spend your last moments with your newly made friends reminiscing about your extraordinary week before heading back home with a fresh look at what lies ahead.

Day 6: Give back to the locals At yLead, we believe it is really important to find ways to give back to the local community when you travel, as a sign of our gratitude. So today will be all about helping out the locals.

We will spend the morning preparing 15kg bags of rice, ready for our trip into the village slums. Distribute bags of rice and bottles of fish and soy sauces to approximately 50 poor families of the students of Feeding Dreams. Not only will this give you the opportunity to meet the locals but it will also allow you to learn about the challenges Cambodians face on a daily basis, as well as give you the chance to leave behind a tangible legacy.

In the afternoon we will make our way back to Feeding Dreams where we will continue to help teach our classes and further bond with our students. We will also have another opportunity to help the chef in the school meals program distributing lunch among the students.

WHY WE DO ‘SCHOOLIES’ ALTERNATIVES...At yLead, we believe that every student deserves the right to celebrate the completion of their secondary education. It is a huge milestone and an important rite of passage as they transition into adulthood. It should be a unique opportunity for students to be with their friends, de-stress, reflect on their success, have fun and meet other young people going through a similar transition.

Unfortunately, a culture has developed in Australia that sees many young people put at risk when celebrating ‘Schoolies’. Many of the options available have become infiltrated by drugs, alcohol and risk-taking behaviour creating an unsafe and uncomfortable environment.

Annually, yLead has the opportunity to interact with more than 25,000 young people across Australia. We believe that the only way to challenge this growing culture is to get in front of students and present them with fresh and exciting alternatives.

yLead is proud to offer school leavers with a series of drug and alcohol free experiences that are centered around creating life-long friendships and memories.
