Education and Career PlanningMeetings for Senior Students

In 2017 we return to a Student LedConference (SLC) format for ECPinterviews. As always the students arerequired to attend their ECP meetings on16th May. In this meeting the conferenceprocess puts the onus on the student tooutline in an address to their parents and

ECP Teacher their plans, goals and strategies for 2017 uponreview of their Term 1 results. This requires all students to bringtwo items to this meeting.

If students are unable to bring this material completed to theirECP meeting, the meeting will have to be rescheduled foranother time when this is completed. By putting the power ofthis meeting in the hands of the students enables them to settheir goals more effectively, and gives more focus to the entireprocess of planning for improvement.

QCS Practice Feedback

This feedback will be returned to the school for the Year 12cohort once further tests are complete that were cancelled dueto the storms in Term 1. Based on this data every studentin Year 12 OP strand will be given a personalised timetableof lessons until August that targets their weaknesses as anindividual with a program of revision and correction based ontheir practice tests in April and May. A number of students havedecided since this practice to opt out of the OP process andthis is perfectly acceptable at this stage of schooling. On 23rdand 24th May students will sit a full two day practice to furtherready them for the real test on 29th and 30th of August.

QCS Community Reps – We Want You!

The Queensland Curriculum and Assessment Authority (QCAA)invites applications from community members for the positionsof chief community representative (CCR) and communityrepresentative (CR) in order to maintain the integrity, securityand conduct of the 2017 QCS Test.

A test centre is a secondary school or another place approvedby the QCAA where students sit the QCS Test. All test centresare located within Queensland and have a chief supervisor toadminister the test.

QCAA appoints CCRs and CRs to observe and report on theadministration of the test. They do not supervise students. This year’s QCS Test will be held on Tuesday 29 August andWednesday 30 August. Applications for the CCR and CRpositions close on Friday 19 May 2017. Application forms areavailable here:

Rank Orders

By the time this newsletter is broadcast, the students in Year 12will have had their ranks for each subject posted on the StudentCentre windows. This is an important process to show studentstheir relative position amongst their cohort for each subject theystudy. Especially for OP eligible students, this is starting pointfor determining students’ OP scores. Students should seek tobe better than the students above them on these ranks if theywish to gain a better OP. OP predicted scores will also beissues by the end of Week 3.

Leadership Day – For all Year 10 and 11Students

On the 5th May there will be no classes for all Years 10 and11 students as this is Leadership day, a precursor to all Years10 and 11 students taking up their place in the senior school. Itis a very worthwhile day with presenters from all over Australiasourced to deliver an impactful program to these year levels.Importantly, it is not a day just for students wishing to becomestudent leaders, rather, it is for all senior students. As parentsplease support this day by encouraging full attendance.

Interviews with Students

With nearly 800 students in the senior school, there needs to bea simple process to co-ordinate student requests for supportinterviews. Students are asked to provide a written request, outlining the points for discussion. Students simply return to theoffice within 24 hours to ascertain their appointment times.

2017 Next Step Survey

The Queensland Government is conducting its annualstatewide survey of all students who completed Year 12 in2016. The Next Step survey is a brief, confidential survey thatgains a comprehensive picture of the employment, study andlife choices made by Queensland school completers in the yearafter they finish Year 12.

Between March and June, all our students who completed Year12 last year can expect to receive instructions to complete aweb-based survey or a telephone call from the QueenslandGovernment Statistician’s Office to complete the survey. Pleaseencourage them to take part. If their contact details havechanged, please assist the interviewer with their updated detailsor forward the survey to their new address so they canparticipate.

Thank you for your support of the Next Step survey in 2017.

MCSHS Physics Students Accelerate TheirKnowledge of Cutting Edge Research

Taking advantage of a unique opportunity last term, MCSHStook 65 of our Years 11 and 12 Physics students to theSciencentre and Queensland Museum in Southbank to learnabout the Large Hadron Collider (LHC), and the discovery of theHiggs Boson. This ties in well with Nuclear Physics that both theQCAA and IB Physics Programs study. Students and teachersalike accepted the invitation to “step inside” the world’s greatestexperiment as they explored the exhibit, surrounded byequipment and recreations of structure from the Large HadronCollider – the world’s most powerful particle accelerator.

This exhibit explored the enormous collaborative internationalscientific effort to detect the Higgs Boson that was finallyrealised at the Large Hadron Collider at CERN in 2012 andwas recognised with the Nobel Prize in Physics in 2013. Thestudents were in awe at the scale of the experiment, withthe main collider ring, a massive 27 km in circumference andinvolving over 10 000 scientists from around the world. It wasvery interesting to look at some of the components of theexperiment and the physics and technology that goes intothese. Students learnt how CERN was the birthplace of theinternet as well as many other technologies we use every day. Some parts of the exhibit also allowed students to view videosthat immersed them into the design and process of the LargeHadron Collider and its experiments. The students also had alot of fun putting some of their physics knowledge to good usein the Sciencentre exploring measurements, forces, and otherinteresting scientific objects like a three-dimensional ConnectFour game, and tests for reaction times, throwing speeds andrunning speeds. Everyone who went thoroughly enjoyed theday, and walked away with knowledge that they could thenapply to their Physics assessments, exams and experiments.

Handball Court

A number of our senior students who are part of our GardenHarvest Program have recently completed construction of ahandball court near the Skill Centre building. This constructiontask contributes to the practical component that these studentsundertake as part of the Certificate 1 Access to VocationalPathways.

The handball court project arose following a survey of SkillCentre students, asking them to identify organised lunchtimeactivities that they would like to see occur for those studentswho choose to access the Skill centre during their break time.Playing handball was identified as one of the popular activities

and thanks to our senior students, we now have a court thatwe anticipate will have much use over the coming years.Congratulations to these students for a job well done!

Shine and Strength Programs Build Self Esteem

“I knew that people were valuable but now I know that I amvaluable” – Yr 8. student

Chaplains Stu and Leonie had the privilege of overseeing theShine for Girls and Strength for Boys programs as anEnrichment option during term 1. These programs are designedto boost self-esteem through a look at worth, strength andpurpose. A group of forty Yr 8 and 9 students participatedduring first term with some great feedback from students andthe volunteer facilitators.

"I have learnt that I am worth something and to never giveup." – Yr. 8 student

"It made me really think about who I am." – Yr. 9 student

Students participated in fun activities, discussions and learningexperiences that highlighted personal value, significance, respect for others and strategies to build emotional strength.Six volunteers from Calvary Leadership College generouslyoffered their time and energy as mentors in the program. Theymade a significant effort to build rapport with the students, encourage participation and at times share personal storiesof overcoming hardships to encourage the students to pushthrough the tough stuff. On the last day the Shine Programsgirls’ mentors read out letters that they had written to their12 year old self, this was an empowering moment which hadthe whole of the girls’ group captivated. It also reinforced thevalue of what the students were learning in the program. Stuand Leonie are grateful for the Calvary Team and the valuableinvestment they are making into the lives of the MCSHSstudents.

“I’ve learnt that when something sad or bad happens I canbe strong.” – Yr. 9 student

“I’ve learnt not to bottle up everything and that I am notalone.” – Yr. 8 student
