Good Vibrations when a trainer comes your way

    Vibrations in machines are usually

an undesirable and disruptive oc-currence that impinges on ma-chine reliability and service life, and reduces the quality of prod-ucts produced or processed onthe machines. Yet every machineand drive also generates vibra-tions that the user, manufactureror operator can take advantageof for purposes of process moni-toring and condition diagnosis. Its much like a general checkup

with a physician. Electrodes areaffixed to certain points on thebody and an electrocardiogram ismade. The cardiologist evaluatesthe heart vibrations over timeand makes a diagnosis of thepatients current state of health. Before suitable diagnostic proce-dures and measurement pointscan be selected, the followinginformation on the machineshould be available:

    structural design interaction between individual

    components characteristic diagnosis param-

eters and their threshold values potential faults and mecha-

nisms that may lead to damageEvery rotating machine compo-nent, be it a roller bearing, gearpair or shaft, generates more orless synchronous vibrations andhas a natural vibration frequency,

which at the begining of thecomponents service life has ahealthy amplitude and shape.Incipient damage such as wear, imbalance and misalignment al-ters the excitations at this fre-quency or creates new excita-tions. Often, the excitation ampli-

    tude will increase. Modern vibra-

tion analyzers use frequency, or-der and phase analyses as well ascepstra to evaluate these chang-es. Each ofthese methodshas its limita-tions and mustbe configuredfor the applica-tion at hand, atask that gen-erally requires

i n - d e p t hknowledge ofthe machine.Seminars arean excellent way to gain a generalidea of the available proceduresand diagnostic methods. Themost effective approach is tohave a trainer join you onlocation. As you introduce Condition Mon-itoring to your maintenance pro-

gram, PRFTECHNIK will provideongoing support as well as train-ing of your future specialists. For example, the above illustra-tion shows the measurementpoint locations on a conveyordrive. Togetherwith the PRF-TECHNIK train-er, you will de-velop diagnos-tic strategies

on the basis ofthis diagram, lay down thecorrespondingroutes andprogram themeasurementfunctions into

    the VIBXPERT FFT data collector

and vibration analyzer. Bench-mark measurements are thentaken and jointly evaluated. Po-

tential faults and their conse-quences are discussed and theresults are documented in aninitial report.A follow-up service takes place 3to 6 months later. At that time, the measured results will be eval-uated and the machines are in-

spected jointly if necessary.Condition-based maintenance isbecoming a reality.
