WHAT’S NEXT? PROJECT PROCESSWHAT ARE THE BENEFITS?

Catalytic infrastructure or development is proven to unlock surrounding development opportunities, increase infrastructure spending, generate construction and create long term benefits such as employment.A good example is Marina Bay Sands (MBS) which transformed the Singapore skyline, economy and tourism industry. In addition to attracting a significant number of tourists and boosting the economy, MBS has introduced world-class transport infrastructure, is dedicated to hiring local residents and provides economic benefits to the service and hotel industries. Investing in tourism infrastructure at the right location on the Gold Coast could create a development similar to MBS.

WHY AN IRD FOR THE GOLD COAST?Tourism supports the Gold Coast economy and thousands of local jobs, however the city has fallen behind other national and international destinations due to a lack of contemporary tourism infrastructure experiences. An IRD will allow the Gold Coast and Queensland to capitalise on the growing Asian tourist market that is now demanding new and exciting tourism infrastructure.

To support the scale of investment, a casino may be included as part of the resort. Any proposal that includes a casino will not be approved unless the gaming area is five per cent or less of the resort gross floor area.

DOES IT INCLUDE A CASINO?

The Queensland Government established the Gold Coast Tourism Advisory Panel (TAP), to conduct preliminary engagement with the Gold Coast community, with the first phase completed in June 2019. The next stage of engagement invites the community to share their views on possible sites for an Integrated Resort Development. To find out how to participate in this process, stay up to date via the project website and social media pages.

HOW CAN THE COMMUNITY BE INVOLVED?

The Queensland Government has no preferred site for the Gold Coast IRD. Possible IRD sites will be nominated by proponents and considered to ensure the best outcome. The Spit, Wavebreak Island and the Broadwater Tourist Park will not be considered. Development is not permitted on beaches or in national parks.
