We understand that a safe, happy, stimulating environment gives children the best possible start to their school life.

Our Fir Cones Pre-School is for children aged 2-4. The children can move freely between well resourced, enriching outdoor and indoor spaces. The broad curriculum enables children to grow and develop and make a smooth transition to our Reception class. Children in Reception further develop their skills in a rich and stimulating environment. They are well prepared for the transition into Key Stage 1 and the continuation of their lifelong learning journey.

Firm Foundations - Fir Cones Pre-School

At The Firs our infant classes; Year 1 and Year 2 continue to build upon their Early Years experience as they begin a more formal learning programme.

They start to access an enhanced English National Curriculum tailored by our experienced staff to nurture your child’s individuality. There is a strong focus on mathematics and literacy skills, however our broad and balanced curriculum strives to create a sense of curiosity and wonder in our pupils in all areas of learning.

As children move through the school, they begin to access the junior National Curriculum.

The children also benefit from continued specialist teaching in sports, music, french, drama, religious education and ceramics. We aim for excellence in all subjects and offer the children the opportunity to shine in all areas of the curriculum, whether it be academic subjects, sports or creative arts.

Developing the Whole ChildWe seek to find every child’s unique gifts and talents and ensure we provide an extensive range of activities and facilities in order to do this.

Outdoor learning is a priority and our Firs Forest enables a wealth of opportunities for creative teaching and learning. Our well resourced school includes specialist spaces and teachers for pottery, art, music, computing and languages. Our wonderful play spaces are designed to inspire and develop imaginative and physical skills. Our large pirate play ship, our climbing wall and adventure playground ensure we have happy engaged children who are always ready to learn.

From Reception, children are able to access our rich extra curricular after school programme.

Our pupils strive to do the best they can, showing resilience and determination.

Children at The Firs enjoy an extensive range of sports; all participate and the opportunity to represent the school in regular matches, tournaments and competitions is something we encourage for every child.

We seek to instil genuine sportsmanship as well as encouraging and developing the children’s skills. We make use of both our onsite and offsite facilities and use specialist sports coaches alongside our well qualified teaching team to ensure our children receive the very best sporting opportunities.

The school is a close-knit community. Founded in 1945 by Mrs Florence Longman it has been in the ownership of the same family for three generations. We actively encourage parents to get involved and aim for our children to be thoughtful members of their community who care for others and value diversity.
