WWII CANADIAN MEAT RATION TOKEN
Canada rationed meat and other goods during World War II. Families
received a weekly meat ration coupon that was good for 2 pounds of meat.
Many did not have refrigeration at home, so they would either use the whole
coupon for a smaller amount of meat, or buy their full amount and risk it
going bad. In 1945 the Canadian government finally issued ration tokens
that were good for a lesser quantity of meat. Each token was worth 1/8 of a
meat ration coupon, so if someone bought less than their full ration of meat,
tokens could be given out in change to be used later. The 22mm blue token is struck on a heavy
blue cardboard with a center hole. Both sides have the same design.

NETHERLANDS RABOBANK 1991 MINT SET
In 1991 Rabobank, a large multi-national bank based in the Netherlands,

medal and a place for a Rabobank executives business card. The set
included all the 1991 Netherlands coins issued for circulation: the 5, 10,
25 Cents, 1, 2 1/2 and 5 Gulden. Just 4000 sets were issued, most of
which were distributed to the bank's most important business clients.
The set catalogs for $40, but due to a fortunate purchase we can offer
this scarce set for much less.

HISTORY IN YOUR HANDS
ROMAN SILVER DENARIUS OF HADRIAN
Hadrian is one of Rome’s most famous and celebrated emperors. During his
reign from 117 to 138AD the empire was largely at peace and prospered under
good government. He spent over a decade touring the empire, inspecting and
ordering improvements where necessary. In Britain, he ordered the construction
of Hadrian's Wall, it separated the unconquered north from the settled province
to the south. The Jewish War or Bar Kokhba Revolt was a notable exception to
the overall peace of this reign. Brutally suppressed, it saw the mass expulsion of Jews and the
construction of a new city, Aelia Capitolina over the ruins of Jerusalem. The silver Denarius
depicts the emperor on the obverse and various gods or goddesses on the reverse. According to
the Bible, a denarius was a day's wages for a common laborer (Matthew 20:2).

ANCIENT OLBIA DOLPHIN COIN
Olbia was a Greek city on the Black Sea in what is
now Ukraine. Between the 5th and 3rd century BC it
issued these unusual bronze dolphin shaped coins.
The crudely cast coins vary in size, from about
20mm to 27mm and lack tails. They are one of the
most unusual ancient coins available, yet are
remarkably affordable due to a recent large hoard.

COIN OF ANCIENT CARTHAGE
Carthage developed from a North-African Phoenician colony in
the 8th century BC to a multi-ethnic empire that at its peak
included parts of North Africa, Spain, Sicily, Sardinia and
Corsica. By the third century BC it was an existential threat to
the Roman Republic, which resulted in the three Punic Wars
between Rome and Carthage. Rome finally destroyed Carthage
in 146BC. This 18mm copper coin of Carthage was made between about 280 and 200BC. It
was during this time that Rome and Carthage were engaged in the First and Second Punic Wars
and Hannibal marched across the Alps with elephants to attack Rome. One side of the coin
depicts Tanit, the chief deity of Carthage. The other side depicts the head of a horse. Carthage
was noted for raising fine horses. The horse was a symbol of Carthage and appeared on most of
its coins.

VIKING TRADE COIN
The Vikings did not strike their own coins. However, they sailed
down the Volga River to the Capian Sea where they encountered
the Samanid Empire in the 10th Century. They traded furs, slaves,
honey and other commodities for these silver Dirhams. They
carried back huge quantities of these coins, which today are found
mainly in Northern Russia and Scandinavia. The thin silver coins
are approximately 30mm in diameter. They have Arabic legends
on both sides. The coins show minimal wear, but are not well
struck so tend to have flat areas.

KING EDWARD III, EDWARD THE BLACK PRINCE & THE 100 YEARS WAR
Edward III became King of England at age 14 in 1327 when his
mother, Isabella of France and her lover, deposed his father,
Edward II. His 50-year reign was a transformational period of
English history. In 1337, French King Philip VI confiscated
Edward's possessions in France, which included the Duchy of
Aquitaine. In return Edward claimed the entire Kingdom of
France, thus starting the Hundred Years War between France
and England (which actually lasted 116 years). Initially Edward
III left his son, Edward The Black Prince, in charge of England
while he campaigned in France. In 1346 Prince Edward joined
his father in France. Prince Edward was a brilliant commander
and is considered one of the greatest knights of his era. He had
numerous military successes against the French, including
battles at Crecy, Calais, and Poitiers, where he captured French King John II. Prince Edward was
noted for his chivalry, but he was also ruthless. He and his troops plundered and burned their
way through France. It 1370 he ordered an indiscriminate massacre of the citizens of Limoges in
revenge for the surrender of the town to the French by its bishop. In 1362 King Edward granted
Prince Edward his dominions in France along with the title of Prince of Aquitaine and Gascony.
Prince Edward gave up the territories in 1372, as the costs of maintaining them exceeded the
revenues they generated. In 1348 the Black Death (bubonic plague) hit England, killing more
than a third of the population. The plague returned again in 1361, killing around 20 percent of the
population. King Edward was forced to turn to Parliament to raise taxes in order to pay for the
war in France. This, along with the shortage of labor caused by the plagues, strengthened and
evolved the power of the English Parliament and helped to define the House of Commons.
Prince Edward died of dysentery in England in 1376 before becoming king. King Edward III died
of a stroke the following year. There is some debate as to why Prince Edward became known as
The Black Prince. Some say it was the color of his shield or armor. Others say it was in
reference to his brutal reputation in France. We are pleased to offer silver Deniers of these
English two monarchs issued for their territories in France. The Denier of King Edward III
depicts a leopard within the legends on the obverse and a cross on the reverse. The Denier of
Edward The Black Prince depicts a half-length portrait of Edward holding a sword on the obverse
and a cross on the reverse. Both of these Anglo-Gallic coins are approximately 18mm and are
quite crude.

WOOD'S HIBERNIA HALFPENNY USED IN COLONIAL AMERICA
Wood's Hibernia Halfpenny was widely used in the
American Colonies so is often collected as part of
American Colonial series. In 1722 English copper
mine owner William Wood obtained a patent to
strike copper coins for Ireland. His coins depict
King George I on the obverse and a woman with a
harp on the reverse. There was considerable
opposition to the coins in Ireland because the Irish
Parliament had not consulted, the weight of the coins was less than that of regal issues, and the
coins were privately struck. In 1737 regal coins were finally made for Ireland and Wood's coins
were partially demonetized, making them even less popular. After receiving a poor reception in
Ireland, large quantities of the coins were exported to the American colonies. Though many in
the colonies did not like them either, there was such a severe coin shortage that they circulated
widely. We have well-worn, corroded examples of this famous coin used in the American
Colonies.

WEIMAR GERMANY INFLATION COINS
In 1922 Germany issued a circulating 3 Mark
coin commemorating the 3rd Anniversary of the
Weimar Constitution. The denomination, date
and mintmark are on the obverse. A Germanic
Eagle and the legend "VERFASSUNGSTAG 11.
AUGUST 1922" (Constitution day, August 11,
1922) is on the other. The aluminum coin is
28mm aluminum and 1.55mm thick. Inflation
quickly took a toll on Germany. In 1923
Germany issued aluminum 200 and 500 Mark coins.
The 500 Mark is just slightly smaller than the 3 Mark:
27mm in diameter and 1.35mm thick. The 200 Mark is
23mm in diameter, 1.2mm thick, and weighs just 1
gram. The designs of the 200 and 500 Mark are similar
to the 3
Mark: The denomination, date and mintmark is on the
obverse, the eagle on the reverse. The legend on the
reverse of the 1923 issues was changed to
"EINIGKEIT UND RECHT UND FREIHEIT" (Unity
and Justice and Freedom" which was the unofficial
national motto. They provide a vivid example of

WEIMAR GERMANY CELEBRATES LIBERATION OF THE RHINELAND
For hundreds of years control of the left (west)
bank of the Rhine had been battled over
between France and Germany. France
considered the Rhine to be the western border
of Germany, Germany considered the Rhine
valley to be German territory. The Rhineland
was rich in coal and was a major industrial
area. The territory was taken from Germany
following World War I. Part of it was returned
to Germany in 1925, but with significant restrictions. In 1930 Germany struck this circulating
silver commemorative 3 Reichsmark to commemorate the return of the Rhineland to Germany.
One side of the 30mm silver coin depicts an eagle standing on a bridge and the legends "DER
RHEIN DEUTSCHLANDS STROM * NICHT DEUTSCHLANDS GRENZE" (The Rhine is
Germany's Power, Not Germany's Border). The other side has the Weimar Eagle within a shield.

was declared an historic monument and has since become a popular tourist destination, with more
than 3 million visitors a year. This unofficial 2020 dated 500 Francs of Mont Saint-Michel

GIANT COCONUT CRAB ON CHAGOS ARCHIPELAGO COIN
The giant Coconut crab is
featured on this unofficial six-
sided 2019 dated 200 Rupees
coin of Chagos. The Coconut
Crab is the largest land
arthropod in the world. It can
grow up to 3 feet (1m) in length
from leg to leg and weigh up to 9
pounds (4.1kg.). Anything left
unattended on the ground is a
potential source of food for the
crab, which they will investigate and may carry away, hence it is sometime called the "robber
crab". The obverse features the Chagos coat of arms which features a sea turtle on top of the
Mauritius coat of arms. Ownership of Chagos is disputed between Great Britain and Mauritius.
Great Britain controls the islands and calls them the British Indian Ocean Territory. In the early
1970’s they evicted the natives on the islands and built a military base on the island of Diego
Garcia. In 2010 Britain established the world’s largest marine reserve that encompassed the
islands. By creating the reserve, it outlawed fishing in the area and effectively prevented the
natives from ever returning to the islands. The Proof coin is struck on silver plated brass and has

WORLD PAPER MONEY
PAPER MONEY OF THE FRENCH REVOLUTION.
The French Revolution brought about a
radical and violent reorganization of French
society. France soon found itself at war with
most of the monarchies of Europe as it tried to
spread its revolutionary ideals. In order to
finance the wars vast quantities of paper
money, called Assignats were issued. The
Assignats were supposedly backed by land
confiscated from the church and nobility that
fled the country (in hopes of keeping their
heads attached). The notes are printed on one
side only on thin, watermarked paper with an embossed seal. The notes carry a warning that the
punishment for counterfeiting is death, and a reward will be paid to informers. This set contains
the seven lower denomination pre-decimal notes issued during the French Revolution. Included
is the 10, 15, 25, 50 Sols, 5, 10 and 25 Livres issued in 1792 and 1793. It was during this period
that France was declared a Republic, King Louis XVI and Marie Antoinette were guillotined and
the revolution became increasingly radical and deadly. This is a rarely offered set of historic
notes from a violent period that completely changed France, but whose ideals ultimately changed
Europe and much of the rest of the world.

KOSSUTH NOTES FOR HUNGARIAN REVOLUTION
In 1848 Hungary revolted against
their Hapsburg monarchs in an
attempt to promote freedom and an
independent Hungary. Lajos (Louis)
Kossuth served as Regent-President
of the short-lived independent
Hungarian nation before the
revolution was crushed. Kossuth
made his way from to Great Britain
and then to the United States where
he received a received a hero's
welcome. While in the United
States he raised funds to continue
the revolution and had these 1, 2
and 5 Forint banknotes printed in
Philadelphia in 1852 for his
Hungarian government in exile.
His attempts to influence United
States politics and his
involvement in an attempt to
overthrow the government of
Haiti alienated his supporters and
he soon returned to England.
These large-sized unissued
Kossuth notes are printed on only
one side, on thin white paper.
The 1 (Egy) Forint depicts
Hungaria standing over a defeated
crowned figure (presumably the
Austrian Emperor) with cannons
draped in the national flags. The legend on buckled leather belts translates as "For Freedom For
God For Home". A vignette of the Three Graces is on the left and a woman inscribing a tablet is
on the right. The 2 (Ket) Forint depicts Justice holding scales on the left, Liberty leaning on the
Hungarian shield at the center and an Athena warrior on the right. The 5 (Ot) Forint features an
arm and hammer at the center. At the top are two women. At the bottom is a beehive and two
Hungarian coats-of-arms. The three unissued notes never circulated, but may show light folds.

1918 RUSSIAN REVOLUTION NOTES FROM BLOODY BAKU
Prior to World War I Baku was part of Russia and was one of the world's leading producers of
petroleum. This made it a much sought-after city during the chaotic times of the Russian
Revolution. After the collapse of the Czarist Government in November 1917, the Baku Commune
under Bolshevik control took control of the city. In March 1918 they slaughtered thousands of
Azerbaijanis and Muslims living in the area. A severe shortage of food and supplies only added
to the misery. In May the Azerbaijan Democratic Republic declared its independence, with Baku
as its capital, even though it did not control Baku at the time. On July 25, anti-Bolshevik forces
backed by British troops took over the city. On September 15, 1918 Ottoman and Azerbaijani
forces fought their way into the city and took over. Thousands of Armenian and Christian
residents were slaughtered in revenge for the March slaughter of Muslims. British troops
returned and took control of the city on November 17 to established order. The British left in
1919, returning the city to the control of the Azerbaijan Democratic Republic, which then fell to
Bolshevik forces in 1920. It was later incorporated into the Soviet Union. Today Baku is the
capital of Azerbaijan. These 1918 dated 25 and 50 Ruble banknotes were issued by the Baku
Commune, (also known as the Baku City Administration or Baku Soviet Municipal

ARMY AND AIR FORCE EXCHANGE (AAFES) POG "COINS"
The Army and Air Force Exchange Services, commonly known as AAFES or just “The
Exchange”, provides goods and services to members of the United States armed forces and their
families throughout the world. Because of the cost and difficulty in supplying coins to bases in
Iraq, Afghanistan, and the Middle East, the AAFES produced these POG coins. They are issued
in the denominations of 5, 10, and 25 cents and are printed on thin colorful 40mm plastic discs.
To avoid legal difficulties the POGs are labeled as "Gift Certificates". The POGS are issued in
dated series, with a dozen or more designs for each denomination in each series. They are a
fascinating but little known military currency collectible. We also have a set of 3 British POGS,
