The Institute of Electrical and Electronics

Engineers (IEEE, read I-Triple-E) is a non-profit

professional association headquartered in New

Jersey that is dedicated to advancing

technological innovation and excellence. IEEE is

the world’s largest professional association

dedicated to advancing technological innovation

and excellence for the benefit of humanity. IEEE

and its members inspire a global community

through IEEE's highly cited publications,

conferences, technology standards, and

professional and educational activities.

IEEE KERALA SECTION

IEEE activities in Kerala have reached its 37th

year. Initiated on 17 February 1975 as a

subsection under the then India section, Kerala

subsection became part of the Bangalore Section

in 1976 upon formation of India Council. Kerala

became a full Section in 1983. The section has

been very active since its formation. It has been

holding a national or international seminar every

year since 1984. The section has a Computer

Society Chapter, a Power and Energy Society

Chapter, a joint Chapter on Industry Applications

& Industrial Electronics Societies and a

Communication Society Chapter. Two affinity

groups called IEEE GOLD and IEEE Women in

Engineering are running under this section.

Student branches have been established in 60

Engineering Colleges.

TISP

TISP (Teacher In Service Program) is an IEEE

Education Activities Initiative to promote

engineering interest in the minds of school

children. The idea is simply to help students

learn the basics of engineering by building

models. The motivation for this model is that

children learn best by doing. Engineers have for

long played great roles in shaping the world.

With TISP, the IEEE community hopes to shape

the youth of tomorrow in becoming better

engineers, “advancing technology for

humanity.”The TISP initiative is a two pronged

process, wherein the Teachers are trained first in

a Teacher Training workshop. The next step is

where the real impact happens when these

trained teachers take the learnings back to the

school and organize follow-up workshops at

their schools.

TISP Week 2012

TISP is a flagship program of IEEE implemented

in various parts of the world. When it comes to

improvements in the Education system, our

nation is always found wanting. TISP Week 2012

was a bold step in this direction and is the

brainchild of many motivated volunteers here at

IEEE Kerala Section. TISP Week 2012 was an

ambitious project aiming to impact at least 160

teachers in just 6 days across the State of Kerala.

Through these teachers, we plan to reach out to

more than 10,000 students this year. Students at

schools will be helped by these teachers in

building basic models that involve basic

engineering concepts, and this will in turn help in

creating curiosity about the idea of engineering.

The success of this initiative will certainly help us

scale this to reach out to more school children in

the coming years.

Expected reach of TISP Week

We are looking to create a curious, enterprising

and socially committed generation of the future.

Highlights:

•8 Teacher Training Workshops in 8 venues

covering all the 14 districts.

•1 year long initiative of reaching out to the

school children of Kerala through their teachers.

•Starting with the TISP week, which involves

extensive Teacher Training Sessions.

•Expected impact is 10,000 school-children by

end of the project in May 2013.

TISP WEEK KERALA – Conclusion

The successful completion of eight Teacher In

Service Program (TISP) workshops within a week

in eight far flung locations by GOLD Affinity

Group of Kerala Section is found to have specific

gains attributable to its Campaign mode

implementation (TISP Week 2012).

1. With a focused activity for the benefit of

Society in the educational area, the

GOLD members across the State found a

worthy cause to work for and take it to

success, energizing the group.

2. By linking it with volunteers from the

student branches of IEEE in and around

the 8 Centres covering all the 14 districts

in the State, awareness and enthusiasm

spread to the vibrant student member

force of IEEE as well.

3. Winning the approval of Education

Department and Government gave

credibility to the event.

4. The Science teachers in the associated

high/higher secondary schools were

drawn in to a very meaningful activity to

arouse and guide scientific and

technological curiosity among students

who would later opt for successful

engineering courses at college level,

through the compulsory follow up

events, to be organized in the 104

schools (original target 80) which

participated in the TISP Week event, with

the final aim of impacting 10,000 high

school age children in 2012. The follow

up activity spontaneously started the

very next day of TISP Week and is

continuing now.

5. The event brought the HS Science

teachers who found it difficult to handle

some of the lessons related to S&T, to

come out and request to GOLD

volunteers to organize in-depth lectures

on such topics in the schools during

holidays or out of class hours, to assist

them update their knowledge on the

latest developments in S&T.

latest developments in S&T. Some such

classes, as also 5 out of 8 TISP events - in

which I also participated - proved beyond

doubt the benefit of giving such expert

lectures in schools as continuing frequent

programs using the services of GOLD

members (no generation gap between

the speakers and listeners).

6. After 3 to 4 years, the impact of TISP can

be seen in Kerala through the improved

quality of students entering engineering

studies and raising their performance

level.

7. While technology is expanding its horizon

at break-neck speed, TISP like society

interaction programs from the IEEE is apt

to act as a bridge and leveraging force to

leapfrog the widening gap between

engineering and technology information

on already accepted & known areas and

the newly emerging areas.

8. The lucidity to new information brought

in through such model making exercises

under TISP follow up – which can be seen

as Technology Clubs – will not only help

teachers and students, but also the

technicians in the society indirectly,

especially in the developing countries.

9. The Regional level Science Exhibitions in

the country is bound to get enriched by

bringing in well understood models to

compete, and educate the public on such

subjects.

10. GOLD should organize a 2 day workshop

covering 4-5 subjects for its volunteers

and senior SB members in the “gap

areas”, to make them competent for

invited lectures in schools

11. Bachelor Degree students may be

prompted to do their mandatory projects

on community problems thro’ school

linked projects.
