After a summer of salads and barbecue, I can’t wait for some heartier fare. Sunday is my day to cook, chopping vegetables for soups or stews that will last us at least through the beginning of the week. These days, in our empty nest, it’s as likely that my husband will be apron-clad, which is a welcome change to the pressure of putting a meal on the table most nights. He, too, has discovered the stress-reducing benefits of chopping, and has developed a pleasing rotation of dishes. I’m always ready to try a new recipe, so we turned to Priscilla Martel, a local award-winning food writer, chef and teacher for some warming fall dishes to whip up. Here you go. Shakshuka Eggs Poached With Tomatoes and Peppers Shakshuka is an “all mixed up” dish of eggs poached or baked in a flavorful pepper and tomato broth. It’s a North African lunch staple that’s spread across the continent to the Middle East and Israel. You’ll see it made with a range of ingredients such as artichoke hearts, feta cheese, harissa, merguez sausage, diced potatoes and all sorts of herbs. I’ve grown to love it for breakfast, where I eat it with a hunk of toasted country bread or a whole wheat pita... Get The Recipe Lamb and Butternut Squash Curry When we have friends to dinner, we often prepare the main course ahead. This gives us plenty of time to enjoy visiting. For a night like this, we tap into our repertoire of long simmered dishes; sturdy stews are the little black dress of entertaining at home... Make Lamb Curry Winter Cabbage and Blue Cheese Slaw with Bacon and Sherry Vinaigrette Cabbage tops my list as a go-to vegetable for everything from soup to side dishes like kimchee. When the weather temperature drops, I turn it into a seasonal slaw and dress it up with the power flavors of blue cheese and toasted walnuts. This salad resembles the type of beet salad you’ll see in many restaurants. It’s more tangy and tart than sweet and tart... Try The Slaw
