Trailblazing pianist, composer, producer and bandleader Jeff Lorber is aconsummate artist who continues to push himself to new plateaus. Agroundbreaking Fender Rhodes pioneer along with the likes of Herbie Hancock, JoeSample and Bob James, Lorber has triumphed as one of the most innovativemusical minds in contemporary jazz. The multi Grammy-nominated pianist’snewest CD is a sterling example of his expansive musical roots, masterfully craftedharmonic and melodic sophistication, irresistible finger-poppin’ grooves andintricate rhythmic sense. “I came up with the name Prototype because we arealways trying to up our game and come up with new exciting music that could be aprototype or innovative harbinger for the future of our musical style,” says the LAbased pianist. Lorber, a Berklee College of Music alum who formerly majored inChemistry at Boston College goes full throttle on Prototype, orchestrating like analchemist in the lab concocting a majestic elixir of jazz, soul, funk, pop, R&B andgospel.

Jeff Lorber’s Fusion came to life in the 70s when the pianist attended BerkleeCollege of Music. “I was listening to Miles Davis and Bitches Brew and the beginningof great fusion bands like Mahavishnu Orchestra, Weather Report and Return toForever,” reflects Lorber. “There were also artists like Herbie Hancock, TheCrusaders and Grover Washington, who pioneered a more melodic and funky typeof sound. Not to mention the fantastic music being made in R&B and pop music likeEarth Wind and Fire and Tower of Power.” Lorber envisioned Jeff Lorber Fusion asecond generation to these fusion bands that were more R&B and melody oriented.A true clinician, Lorber has made it a point to study the long line of modern jazzpianists since 1945. “Herbie Hancock and Chick Corea have been major influencesbut I had to go back and try to figure out who they listened to and were inspiredby,” says Lorber. “Some of these icons that come to mind are Bill Evans, TheloniousMonk, McCoy Tyner and Bud Powell.” He adds, “I also can’t forget all of the pianistswho played with Miles Davis such as Red Garland, Wynton Kelly, Tommy Flanaganand Horace Silver.”

Guitar Virtuosos Back on Nighttown Stage for a two nights of Stunning Fretwork!

Frank Vignola

Frank Vignola is one of the most extraordinary guitarists performing before thepublic today. His stunning virtuosity has made him the guitarist of choice for manyof the world’s top musicians, including Ringo Starr, Madonna, Donald Fagen,Wynton Marsalis, Tommy Emmanuel, the Boston Pops, the New York Pops, andguitar legend Les Paul, who named Vignola to his “Five Most Admired Guitar List”for the Wall Street Journal. Vignola’s jaw-dropping technique explains why the NewYork Times deemed him “one of the brightest…stars of the guitar”.

Born on suburban Long Island on December 30, 1965, Vignola was raised in theNew York area. The Italian-American started playing the guitar at the age of six andgrew up admiring a variety of guitarists. Far from a jazz snob, Vignola neverlistened to jazz exclusively and was also a major fan of classical, rock, R&B, andpop. The guitarists that he admires range from Django and Les Paul to rock iconslike Frank Zappa and Eddie Van Halen. As a young adult, Vignola studied at theCultural Arts Center of Long Island and went on to enjoy an enormous amount ofsideman gigs in the 1980s including recording and touring with the likes ofMadonna, Leon Redbone, Ringo Starr as well as coming into his own as a leader in1988 with his famed Hot Club of France tribute which was hailed in the NY Times asone of the top ten acts in New York City in 1988 and forged the way for the manyDjango Hot Club groups that followed.

The New Yorker was 27 when, in 1993, he signed with Concord Jazz and recordedhis first Concord session as a leader, Appel Direct. Many more Concord releasesfollowed in the 1990s as well as 3 releases for the Telarc label as co-leader of thegroup Travelin’ Light. The early 2000′s found Vignola recording a solo guitar CD forAcoustic Disc as well as performing regularly with guitarist, Les Paul. This alsomarked the time that Frank began working with record producer Joel Dorn as wellas making featured appearances on Atlantic, Sony and Warner Brothers Recordswith the likes of Donald Fagen, Queen Latifah, Mark O Connor and Wynton Marsalis. He also recorded a collection of Gershwin pieces for Mel Bay Records titled, “VignolaPlays Gershwin” which was number 2 in NPR radio airplay charts. In recent years,Vignola has recorded two important collaborative CD’s, “Just Between Frets” withTommy Emmanuel on Solid Air Records and “Frank-N-Dawg, Melody Monsters” withmandolinist David Grisman on Acoustic Disc Records.

Dominick Farinacci Quintet$30.00 Friday 4/13 8:30 pm Buy Tickets

Rising Trumpet Star and his Group Back by Popular Demand Live at Nighttown!

Dominick Farinacci recently released his Mack Avenue Records debut, "ShortStories" -- a compelling suite of music with a repertoire that spans genres andgenerations united by the trumpeter/composer's soulful conception. Bringingtogether songs from Tom Waits, Horace Silver, Dianne Reeves and the Gipsy Kingsas well as original compositions, Farinacci has managed to create his own musicaluniverse, aided by musicians of the highest caliber. All of the songs have anarrative that any listener can relate to.

Farinacci had already achieved enough stature by his mid-teens that WyntonMarsalis offered to help him set his sights on coming to New York, and by 2001,Farinacci was one of only four trumpeters in the world to be selected as theinaugural students in The Juilliard School's first jazz curriculum. During his schoolyears and afterwards, Farinacci immediately distinguished himself as asoloist/bandleader/composer with a vision.

Soon thereafter, Farinacci was named the first Global Ambassador for Jazz atLincoln Center and traveled to Qatar where his world expanded beyond his wildestdreams. Throughout the two years that Farinacci spent there, he broadened hisactivities to include dozens of different projects, where the goal was, through hismusic and outreach activities, to unite communities and overcome barriers of everysort.

Life itself has many different sorts of mentorship built into it. A life in the arts can'texist without these kinds of relationships, and Short Stories is the fruit of thecoming together of two kindred spirits, Farinacci and LiPuma, from the same hometown (Cleveland, Ohio), separated by just under half a century in age. What unitesthem is a clear, moern aesthetic vision that combines the highest musical standardswith a desire to be agents of change.

There are so many superlatives thrown around these days that they seem to havelost their effect; but as this unique and deeply grounded album sinks into yourconsciousness, you will undoubtedly come to the conclusion that Dominick Farinacciis not only one of the truly outstanding musicians of his generation, but also thatwhat is behind the music is nothing short of miraculous. In Farinacci's own words:"While Short Stories is the title of this particular recording, it has come to representa culmination of things I'm most passionate about - performance, education, music& wellness and community-based cultural collaborations - unfolding in the musicand touring around the world."

Andre Cavor & The Cavor Project$20.00 Saturday 4/14 8:30 pm Buy Tickets

North Coast Contemporary Jazz Saxophonist & Group hit the Stage at Nighttown!

Featuring music from his brand new CD "Road Trip".

On Nighttown's fully heated and covered Stephens Green Patio.

Over the past two decades, urban jazz icons Kirk Whalum and Jonathan Butler havepaved the way for emerging artists to take a bolder approach to blending theirpassions for instrumental pop, jazz and soul and gospel music. While those twoartists were well established before they began recording gospel and worshipalbums – and rarely blend the two styles on a single project – saxophonist AndreCavor is unabashedly sharing his lifelong love for both styles of music from the getgo.

go. True to its title, the Cleveland based performer’s independent debut album RoadTrip chronicles his multi-faceted journey – starting with playing the sax in churchand, over the past decade, founding and leading The Cavor Project, an 11 pieceensemble renowned as one of the most diverse bands in the city. Andre found theperfect producer to take his artistry to the next level in Darren Rahn, a saxophonistand artist who has worked his studio magic for Whalum and Butler in addition togenre greats Dave Koz, Wayman Tisdale, Najee, Eric Darius, Jeffrey Osborne andJeff Lorber. “Mixing contemporary jazz and gospel songs on Road Trip felt like a naturalextension of my many live performances over the years,” says Andre, who firstbegan playing the sax at 16 but let it go during his eight year stint in the armybefore rediscovering it in the early 2000s. “So many people I have played for and entertained liked and responded emotionallyto both sides of my artistry,” he adds. “When I started thinking about doing myfirst solo album, I thought I should share everything I truly love to do. Of course, Iheard from some fellow sax players and other naysayers, telling me that new artistsshould never mix gospel and smooth jazz/R&B, that audiences won’t get it for somereason. My response was, ‘I honestly don’t think you were conceived to a gospeltune!’ and then told them I believed that people that love church and God also loveR&B. I felt it was important to share my entire self with people. Including both onRoad Trip was the perfect way to share my entire self with everyone.” Andre laid the foundation for Road Trip with hundreds of performances as leader ofThe Cavor Project, which has been a mainstay on the Cleveland music scene since2007. The band is known for infusing fresh, explosive energy into vocal andinstrumental classics from the 80’s through 2017 and spicing up their set list withdynamic originals. The Cavor Project performs a grooving mix of R&B, smooth jazz,hip-hop, reggae, pop, blues, rock and gospel. When I see the smiles on people’s faces when they hear my music, it’s anoverwhelming feeling and confirmation that I’m doing exactly what I am put hereto do. My goal is always to make people happy, and now with the release of RoadTrip, I’m excited about reaching beyond my comfort zone and sharing the joy withmore people.”

generations. They also build on the heritage of Irish immigrants who settled inAppalachia, where Irish song provided some of the building blocks for old-time,country, and bluegrass. In choosing to record their first album, the eponymouslytitled The Alt, at a cabin in North Carolina’s Appalachian Mountains, The Altembraced this fruitful musical lineage.

John Doyle: Name many of the most notable recordings and/or performers in Irishmusic and it's a fair bet that John Doyle had something to do with them. LizCarroll; Eileen Ivers; Karan Casey; Solas; Michael Black; Mary Black; the trio ofMcCusker, McGoldrick and Doyle; The Teetotalers (Martin Hayes, Kevin Crawford,John Doyle); and now Usher's Island (Andy Irvine, Donal Lunny, Mike McGoldrick,Paddy Glackin and John Doyle) - a veritable who's who of the greatest names inIrish music. In 1991 Cathy Jordan joined Sligo based traditional group Dervish and started herrecording career with the Dervish album "Harmony Hill" to huge critical acclaim. This saw Cathy returning to her roots of raditional music and song and sparked offa musical journey which has spanned nearly 3 decades. Corky Siegel is known internationally as one of the world’s great blues harmonicaplayers, and is a celebrated composer, blues pianist, singer, songwriter, band leaderand author.

Born in Chicago in 1943, Corky’s professional music career began when he foundedthe now legendary Siegel-Schwall Band in Chicago in 1964 with guitarist JimSchwall. The group was a major component of the young generation of white bluesartists—also including Paul Butterfield, Charlie Musselwhite, Harvey Mandel, BarryGoldberg, Nick Gravenites and Michael Bloomfield—who learned the historic Chicagoblues style at the feet and hands of such towering figures as Muddy Waters, Howlin’Wolf, Little Walter, Willie Dixon, Buddy Guy and Sam Lay.

Corky played with all these greats at Siegel-Schwall’s first steady engagement, in1965 at Peppers, Chicago’s internationally renowned blues club. They were soonsigned to Vanguard Records, with blues luminary Samuel Charters producing. Theirfirst album, The Siegel-Schwall Band, was released in 1966, and with it the groupmade San Francisco a virtual second home: There the likes of Janis Joplin, Santana,Steve Miller and Joni Mitchell opened for them (Siegel-Schwall actually producedMitchell’s demo tape); the band would record three more classic albums forVanguard up through 1970, then five for Wooden Nickel/RCA through 1974 beforegoing on hiatus.

After releasing three solo albums, Corky founded Corky Siegel’s Chamber Blues, featuring himself on harmonica, piano and vocals, the West End String Quartet oftopflight Chicago classical string players, and Frank Donaldson on world percussioninstruments. The novel ensemble performed Siegel’s pioneering blues/classicalmusic compositions and released its first album, Corky Siegel’s Chamber Blues, onChicago’s famed blues label Alligator Records in 1994.

Howard Levy is equally at home in Jazz, Classical music, Rock, Folk, Latin, andWorld Music, he brings a fresh lyrical approach to whatever he plays.

Howard Levy is a musician without limits. Composer, Grammy Award winner, multi-instrumentalist, he is best known for his astonishing harmonica playing, which hasearned him the admiration of audiences worldwide. This has made him a favoriteand a recording artist sought after by the likes of The Flecktones, Kenny Loggins,Dolly Parton, Rabih Abou Khalil, and Paquito D, Rivera, Styx, Donald Fagen, andPaul Simon.

All About Jazz says, “Levy’s harmonica playing is startlingly fluid and full of thetechnical prowess that would be expected from the genre’s top saxophonists, notfrom an instrument that is often associated with campfire cowboys and Mississippibluesmen…These musicians have come together to prove, once again, that it’s notnecessary to only look to New York for the best in American jazz.”

It is only natural then that Corky Siegel and Howard Levy, two of Chicago’s mostrevered and celebrated music treasures, would come together to make people

revered and celebrated music treasures, would come together to make peoplelaugh while knocking them flat with jaw dropping virtuosity.

Dan Pugach Nonet$20.00 Saturday 5/05 8:30 pm Buy Tickets

From Israel/NYC. Dynamic Drummer leads little Big Band at Nighttown Featuring

vocalist Nicole Zuratis.

Featuring: Dan Pugach-drums & leader, Nicole Zuratis-vocals, David Smith-

trumpet, Sam Blakeslee-tromobone, Jen Hinkle-bass trombone, Andrew Gould-

alto sax/flute, Jeremy Powell-tenor sax/clarinet, Brandon Coleman-guitar, & Leo

Sherman-bass.

“I can’t gush enough about the joyful energy that Dan and his Nonet express in themost open of ways. Dan’s music is thoughtful, exciting and immenselyengaging.” —Ingrid Jensen

“Dan's writing is sharp, concise and so is everybody's playing. Beautiful album.”—Antonio Sanchez

"His mastery of the music from the subtle inner workings of his horn orchestrationsto his command over shaping larger musical statements puts Dan in a league of hisown." —Alan Ferber

Pugach goes from strength to strength on Plus One, the album showcasing hisbeautifully intricate compositions, peerless arrangements and yes, his drumming, which is funky, on-point and surprisingly restrained for a musician of such skills andgifts. Dan's arrangements for Nonet recall the classic sounds of Thad Jones and MelLewis, Bob Mintzer, and the Vanguard Jazz Orchestra–expressed in a far smallerensemble. Deft compositions, challenging arrangements, brilliant players and Dan'ssilken rhythmic touch make Plus One a special outing.

Dan Pugach is a Brooklyn-based, two-time ASCAP Jazz Composer Award-winningdrummer/arranger. Dan has worked with Ingrid Jensen, Rosa Passos, Airto Moreira,Gregoire Maret, Billy Drews, Jeremy Pelt, Wayne Bergeron, Sloan and LucyWainwright, and Dave Stryker, among others. Originally from Israel, Dan servedhis mandatory three-year military duty as the drummer of the Air-Force Orchestra. He received his bachelor’s degree from Berklee College of Music and his master’sfrom the City College of New York, where he studied with Hal Crook, Joe Lovano,George Garzone, John Patitucci, Terri Lyne Carrington and Ari Hoenig.
