55 and Counting for RHFStory and Photo by Margaret Snider

SACRAMENTO REGION, CA (MPG) - President and CEO Dr. Laverne R. Joseph was the special guest and speaker at a recent luncheon at McGregor Commons celebrating the 55th anniversary of Retirement Housing Foundation (RHF). “Every five years we celebrate these anniversary events,” said Wilma Wilson, RHF north-west regional manager. “It is a chance for Dr. Joseph and folks in our corporate office to meet with the residents, take a look at the properties, see what we’re doing.” Local elected officials were also invited.

Residents, staff, and com-munity leaders gathered for the luncheon. Don Nottoli, Supervisor from District 5 presented a resolution recog-nizing RHF on behalf of the Sacramento County Board of Supervisors. “I remember when this facility was built,” Nottoli said. “You’re part of the fabric of this community . . . You are truly appreciated and we are looking forward to a long relationship.”

RHF is among the larg-est nonprofit providers of affordable housing in the country, with more than 20,500 residents in 185 com-munities in 29 states, District of Columbia, Puerto Rico, and the Virgin Islands. In the Sacramento area two facil-ities are collectively called Diakonia I, the individ-ual units being McGregor Commons in Rancho Cordova and Mendocino Plaza in Sacramento, with 24 units each.

Long waiting lists are

common, Joseph said, espe-cially in urban areas. Diakonia I currently has 35 appli-cants on the waiting list. “We can never estimate a time (of availability),” said McGregor Commons manager Maria Claustro, “because it all has to do with how many vacancies we get and how often we get them.”

RHF was at one time invited to be part of a study by Chicago’s Rush University on rehospitalizations – the fre-quency with which a person discharged from the hospital returns as an inpatient within a 30 day period. After an analysis of RHF housing in

Chicago, study organizers found that of the 1,400 seniors there, hospitalizations aver-aged only five or six a month, with only one or two rehos-pitalizations. “They said, ‘you’re too atypical, you can’t be in this study’,” Joseph said. “This is what you have when you have senior housing with social services connecting the residents to free services in the community. And the resi-dents also support one another. Having somebody to talk to, you don’t panic every time you get a stomachache.”

A number of the resi-dents of McGregor Commons attended the luncheon, one

being Wayne Bidstrup. Years ago, while helping his father on their cattle ranch near Placerville his truck over-turned, resulting in a disabling spinal cord injury. He has lived at McGregor Commons for 14 years. “I think it’s a good organization, and a good apartment complex,” Bidstrup said. “(It’s) an 8 on a scale of 10.”

Clyde Thornton has lived there for six years. “I love this place,” Thornton said. Having lived in a high rise previ-ously, he appreciated that at McGregor Commons, “every-thing is on one level.” He stressed the value of friends

there. The housing program is

geared toward persons 62 years older whose income is not more than 50% of the area median income, and those with disabilities. It was started in 1961 by two United Church of Christ clergymen and one lay-man, with $7,000 and a vision of providing dignified, afford-able housing and services for the elderly. Before assum-ing his position in 1987, Dr. Joseph served on the Board for one year while he pastored a large church in Chicago and was executive director of sev-eral healthcare communities, also in Chicago. H

Joseph, President and CEO of Retirement Housing Foundation; Meghan Rose, Director of Policy - Housing and HCBS, Leading Age, California; Reverend Phil Konz, Pioneer Congregational United Church of Christ.

California is a hotbed of the craft brewing industry. Since 2010 the num-ber of craft breweries in the state has more than doubled to nearly 700. With such an immense amount of competi-tion, ARBC founder David Mathis is justifiably pleased with the back-to-back win.

“With so many worthy competitors also brewing at such a high level, this win really validates all the hard work we’ve put into making truly great beer,” Mathis stated. “Plus, since this is our flagship beer, it means even more.”

ARBC partner and Head Brewer, Andy Armstrong, agrees that the effort was worth the result. “We spent a great deal of time perfecting the recipe for Coloma Brown,” he said, “and that was no easy process. Getting recognition like this from a panel of expert judges two years running demonstrates that we’ve gotten it as close to perfection as it can be.”

Following a recent trend among craft breweries, ARBC has begun canning some of its brews and Coloma Brown may be added to the canning lineup. “So far we have our Lawn Jockey Session IPA, Fire Break Red Ale and Capitol Copper Amber Ale ready to begin can-ning,” Mathis noted, “It would be fantastic if we were to include Coloma Brown as well.”

American River Brewing Company is located at 11151 Trade Center Drive in Rancho Cordova. For more information and a complete list of awards, please visit their website at www.americanriv-erbrewco.com

Look Who Turned Five!Sacramento Children’s Museum Celebrates Fifth Year

Story and Photo by Margaret Snider

SACRAMENTO REGION, CA (MPG) - The Rancho Cordova July lun-cheon featured Sharon Stone Smith, executive director of the Sacramento Children’s Museum in Rancho Cordova. The museum is located immediately adjacent to City Hall. After a six year plan-ning period, the museum opened in 2011 with 100,000 visitors the first year. Over 465,000 have attended to date.

This is the museum’s fifth year. “Usually we do an event called Leo’s birthday bash every August, and our birthday is actu-ally August 25th,” Smith said. “But this year we’re celebrating all year long, so it doesn’t mat-ter when we have our party.” The event is from 10 a.m. to 12 p.m., Sunday, October 16.

Children must be accompanied by an adult when they attend the museum, but there are occasional drop-off nights when patrons can leave their children at the museum with the fully trained and helpful staff. “First and fore-most, we are all about children,” Smith said.

Admission to the museum is $8.50 per person, from age 1 to 59; 60 years and older and mem-bers of the military are $6.00. Those under one year old are admitted free. Since the museum hopes to be accessible to all the children of the area, there are ways to gain admission to the museum for free.

“One of the really cool partner-ships we have with the Children’s Museum of Sacramento is that they give the library branch five free passes every month,” said Jill Stockinger, supervisor of the Rancho Cordova branch of Sacramento Public Library. “Each pass lets in four people, and you check it out with your library card.” Other library branches have museum passes for check-out as well.

F u n d r a i s i n g p r o v i d e s

sponsorships for field trips and memberships and for chil-dren with special needs. The first Saturday in February is “free museum day.” Basically, every participating museum in Sacramento opens up for free. “We all do it as a day to give back to the community,” Smith said. “We break our record every year.”

Many fun and educational exhibits and hands-on activi-ties are offered at the museum. The airways and raceways exhibit illustrates velocity, gravity, motion, friction, and acceleration. When Christopher Strika, museum director of facil-ities and exhibits, took his son Jackson to visit the first time, Jackson only watched. A month later, he tried without success to feed the balls in himself. Now,

nearing three years old he is fully hands on. Jackson showed each cognitive step he reached by the way he interacted with the exhibit. “It’s really nice, as a father and as a manager for this facility, to see him grow,” Strika said.

The museum changes every day, Smith said. “It’s all about what the kids bring to the museum with their imagination and their personality.”

To create a safe environ-ment for children, all adults must be accompanied by a child. However, a tour with museum staff can be arranged. For museum days and hours and other information, please call 916-638-7225, e-mail [email protected], or go to www.sack-ids.org. H

Dave Says‘Fool’s Gold’Hey Gold River, Let’s Play a Game!

By David Dickstein, Gold River resident

As a veteran of five television game shows, I love a good and fun brain workout. And I’ll bet my super-cool Kawai keyboard, won 22 years ago on “Boggle,” that you do, too. So let’s play a game. I can’t offer you cash and prizes like I won on “Name That Tune,” “Sale of the Century” “Scrabble,” “Trivial Pursuit” and “Boggle,” but if you get a solid score at least you’ll have something to gloat about the next time you’re in the Bel Air checkout line. Sure beats talk-ing about the weather or your chronic back pain.

The rules are simple: Each right answer for the below mul-tiple-choice questions earns you 10 points. Scoring works like this: 100 points – “GReat!”; 70-90 points – “GRand!”; 40-60 points – “GRim!”; 0-30 points – “GRoss!”

Let’s play … “So You Think You Know Gold River!”

Question 1: With a median family income of over $117,000, Gold River is the highest-income place in Sacramento County. Which commu-nity comes in second? A) Rancho Cordova; B) Rancho Murieta; C) Rancho Seco; or D) Rancho Dressingo.

Question 2: The visionary developer who designed our mas-ter-planned community was: A) Robert E. Lee; B) Robert Yee Li; C) Robert C. Powell; or D) Mark S. Allen?

Question 3: Which among “The Big Four” of influential American merchants does not have a Gold River vil-lage named after him? A) Leland Stanford; B) Charles Crocker; C) Collis Huntington; or D) Mark “What Am I, Chopped Liver?” Hopkins.

Question 4: Gold River shares its name with all but which of the following: A) Communities in Nova Scotia and British Columbia; B) A French thoroughbred racehorse; C) A brand of tobacco; or D) A distastefully named urinal company?

Question 5: Gold River’s favorite coffee place is: A) Starbucks; B) Peet’s Coffee kiosk inside Bel Air; C) Applebee’s; or D) The Wells Fargo Bank lobby? Don’t knock it – it’s free!

Question 6: The cor-rect name of Gold River’s most popular Italian res-taurant is: A) Il Forno Classico; B) Il Fornaio; C) Il Fornaio Classico; or D) Il Forno Fornaio Classico?

Question 7: The thunderous horn blasts we hear come from: A) Aerojet; B) Nimbus Dam; C) Mather Airport; or D) Eskaton on taco night?

Question 8: The most common viola-tion of the CC&Rs is: A) Leaving trash cans out past Friday; B) Cracked driveways; C) Overnight street parking in Powell villages; or D) Getting dressed sock, sock, shoe, shoe instead of

the GRCA-approved pro-cedure of sock, shoe, sock, shoe?

Question 9: The nickname for Gold River Discovery Center stu-dents is: A) Discoverers; B) Miners; C) Minors; or D) The Kids Who Keep Blaze in Business?

Question 10: The most embarrassing thing about Gold River Racquet Club is: A) Outdated keyed lockers; B) Cardio machines with obsolete 30-pin iPhone connectors; C) Rusty and dusty floor fans; or D) David Dickstein’s body?

Answers: 1) B; 2) C; 3) D; 4) D; 5) A; 6) A; 7) A; 8) C; 9) B; 10) D.

Hope that was fun. If you scored “GReat!” way to go! If you got “GRoss!” better luck next time. Oh, if you want to see highlights and low-lights from my TV game show appearances, visit YouTube and search “Dickstein” and “game show.” You’ll find a dozen clips showing various levels of suc-cess and failure. One favor: Please overlook the Parker Stevenson haircut and clip-on tie I had on “Name That Tune.” I had just turned 18 and dorks weren’t yet in fashion. H

LEGAL ADS FOR SACRAMENTO COUNTY?

It’s for everyoneMy husband and I have seven

kids. What parts of your program work best for large families?

- Karen

Dear Karen,My entire plan works for a

large family. Larger families just have more expenses. What does change — and you already knew this — is that it can be a larger financial burden. This isn’t crit-icism; it’s just a mathematical fact.

When you kick things into overdrive like you folks have done, two things have happened. One, you’ve extended the time that you’re going to be support-ing the kids financially. Two, you’ve got a lot of baby birds to feed and clothe. Unless you have an astronomical income, it slows down the process of hit-ting financial goals like getting out of debt, because you’ve got a drain on the math side of things. It’s a wonderful drain; it’s a glo-rious drain; but mathematically speaking where the money is concerned, it’s still a drain.

You really don’t have any choice but to do a budget. Having seven kids doesn’t give you an excuse to live out of con-trol or mean that living out of control without a plan is the def-inition of success. You’ve got to set more emergency categories aside in your budget. You’ve got to budget heavier for food, med-ical, transportation and things like that, because you’ve got more things pulling at you — and your money!

—Dave

Commonsense calculation

Dear Dave,I make $80,000 a year, and

I was wondering if there’s an easy way to determine how much money a person would need to live comfortably after retirement.

- John

Dear John,A commonsense rule of

thumb, if you’ve got your money invested in good growth stock mutual funds, is to pull from those funds at a rate that is lower than which they are growing. Otherwise, you’ll destroy them, right?

I tell folks if they want to pull off six percent to eight percent

— I’m comfortable doing eight percent — then you’ve got to decide exactly how much you want to live on and what that means for your nest egg. If you want to live on $80,000 a year, it means you have to have a $1 mil-lion nest egg. If you want to live on $40,000 a year, then you need a half-million dollar nest egg for what we’re talking about here.

To get into that a little bit fur-ther, I would advise going to Chris Hogan’s website. He’s got a tool on there that takes just a few minutes, and it will give you exact numbers on what you need to do. It’s ChrisHogan360.com, and the tool is called the R:IQ — your Retire Inspired Quotient.

You can walk through it, and in just a few minutes you’ll know exactly what’s going on and what needs to happen!

In the past few weeks the most effective invasion force in the history of the world has conquered the US. It consists not of soldiers or spies, but of a series of small, cartoon crea-tures that now digitally populate every street corner and back-yard in the country. Pokemon Go has dominated the citizens of the United States, gathering tens of millions of players and breaking App Store download records. With a huge percentage of the population now sucked into developer Niantic’s virtual Nintendo-wonderland, many are left baffled at how Pokemon Go has gained popularity so quickly, and at what exactly the game is.

Pokemon Go falls into the (until now) underpopulated genre of augmented reality (AR) games. This AR technology, still in its incredibly primitive stages, aims to allow digital worlds to interact with and mesh with the real one. In Pokemon Go, Niantic utilizes mobile devices’ GPS function to over-lay an animated colorful world over a Google Maps-esque version of the real world. As players explore the real world, their character simultaneously treks through the virtual one, discovering Pokemon along the way. Once a Pokemon is found, players attempt to “catch” the beast to add it to their collection.

It’s a clever way to encour-age a stereotypically indoor demographic to go outside, exercise, and explore the real world. Pokemon rarely appear at your feet, and by telling you what Pokemon are nearby with-out revealing exactly where, it forces you to move around in

physical space to succeed in the game’s virtual community.

This is hardly the first game to come up with such an idea. In fact, Niantic itself created a similar AR experience in 2013 that failed to take off. Yet, the popular Pokemon brand has roped in a market typically apa-thetic towards mobile games, bringing much of the more “hardcore” gaming space out of the shadows to play. Many of the players grew up with the origi-nal Pokemon games, which, in the same spirit as Go, encour-aged digital exploration to build up a collection of different spe-cies of fictional monsters. The nostalgia towards what for many was a favorite childhood game has brought adults and older teens into the Pokemon Go eco-system in droves, far more than the younger generation towards which the series is usually aimed.

Nevertheless, Go’s success has also brought a fair degree of suspicion. Stories about peo-ple injuring themselves while playing or criminals targeting Go players have gone viral, and the placement of “PokeStops” (real world points-of-interest that players can visit to obtain in-game items) has sparked fre-quent outrage. PokeStops have been accidentally placed in

people’s houses, making their private property a player con-gregation point without their consent. The Holocaust Museum, naturally considered a “point-of-interest” on the map, had to officially request that people stop using such a solemn location to play. Even in Sacramento, I’ve discovered an area inappropri-ately littered with PokeStops and Pokemon...a graveyard.

Fortunately, Niantic seems determined to fix these issues. Their plate is fairly full try-ing to fix the game’s numerous bugs and glitches, but their web-site does allow users to submit requests to have PokeStops removed from their personal property or from potentially dan-gerous areas. In the future, it’s reasonable to assume that the game will also allow people to “blacklist” certain inappropriate locations and prevent Pokemon from showing up. Until then, the Pokemon Go community sim-ply needs to learn how to be respectful and accept limitations while still having fun, something which, in numerous situations already, they’ve shown them-selves willing to do.

Bera Announces Nearly $800k Grant for Runway Upgrades to Mather Airport

SACRAMENTO, CA (MPG) - Congressman Ami Bera (CA-7) announced last week a major grant from the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) for upgrades to Mather Airport’s run-ways. The grant of $788,500 will be used to rehabilitate and upgrade the taxiway to FAA standards and to install runway lights along the taxiway. Congressman Bera was joined by Airport Director John Wheat and Airport Chief Administrative Officer for Planning and Development TJ Chen, and will discussed other ongoing projects to improve the safety and efficiency of the airport.

“This investment in Sacramento Mather Airport is great news for our community,” said Congressman Bera. “Improving the conditions of the runway and safety with lights is critical to attracting, maintaining, and expanding pri-vate investment and economic development in the area. Making our airport more convenient and efficient to passengers and businesses has a positive impact on our community and our economy.”

“Sacramento County is grateful of the efforts made by the Congressman to secure Federal funding from the FAA to improve the airfield at Mather Airport, which is a vital component of the aviation and cargo infrastructure for the Sacramento region,” said Airport Director John Wheat.

This grant will fund the rehabilitation of approximately 670 feet of the existing con-nector Taxiway B-North that is needed to

maintain structural integrity of the pave-ment. It will also fund the installation of a new Taxiway B-North edge lighting system to enhance safe airfield operations during low visibility conditions.

A True Water Emergency Threatens the Delta: Your Voice Matters

Commentary by Don Nottoli, Sacramento County Supervisor

California decision makers are at a historic crossroads in the long-standing California water crisis. The outcome will permanently alter the Sacramento –San Joaquin Delta. Your voice can steer these decisions in the right direction and now is the time to speak up.

On July 26, 2016, the State Water Resources Control Board will begin a series of hearings that will help deter-mine whether the Governor’s proposed twin tunnels project

will continue to move forward. During these proceedings, agencies and water contrac-tors will suggest that the Governor’s proposed $16 bil-lion rate-payer funded twin tunnels project is a necessary improvement to a water sys-tem on the brink of collapse. They will also claim the proj-ect is necessary to improve the Delta ecosystem. These claims are simply not true. In fact, re-plumbing the Delta may actually accelerate the decline of its environment.

The 44-foot diameter, approx-imately 35-mile long twin tunnels will syphon millions of gallons of water per minute out of the Delta and send it south. If constructed, this project will harm local economies amount-ing to a loss of tens of millions of dollars annually. It will neg-atively affect family farms, agricultural operations, and Delta river communities dis-rupting a generations-old way of life. The project will also negatively impact recreation and water quality, degrade deli-cate environmental ecosystems, and harm fish and other endan-gered species.

The Delta Counties Coalition consists of local elected leaders from five counties whose com-munities will be permanently

harmed if the twin tunnels are built. The project was devel-oped without adequate local input and would irreversibly damage the Delta by depleting its watershed, would benefit one region of the state at the expense of another, and will not produce a single drop of new water.

More cost-effective solutions exist that the Delta Counties Coalition supports, such as creating more surface and underground storage, improv-ing Delta levees to help move water more efficiently through the Delta, and greater regional solutions such as stormwa-ter capture, wastewater reuse, and local desalination. We urge decision makers to implement these solutions, which are good for all of California.

You can help. Speak up. Contact Governor Jerry Brown and your local and state elected leaders to voice your opinion and concerns about the twin tunnels project. For more infor-mation, please visit www.delta.saccounty.net/.

S a c r a m e n t o C o u n t y Supervisor Don Nottoli is chair of the Delta Counties Coalition, an alliance of the California Counties of Sacramento, Yolo, San Joaquin, Solano and Contra Costa Counties. H
