• An electric circuit can be represented using
a diagram.
• Each part of the circuit is represented with
a symbol.
• By reading a circuit diagram, it is possible
to determine how the circuit works and how
to repair it when it does not function
properly.

Using the proper symbols, draw a circuit diagram showing:
• 1 cell• 1 light bulb • 1 open switch on the negative side of the bulb
• In a series circuit, electrons flow
through only one path.
• Loads are connected in a chain, one
after another in one continuous loop.
• When one load does not work, the
whole chain of loads stops working
because electrons cannot flow.

Series Circuits
• In a parallel circuit, electrons can
flow through more than one path.
• Loads are connected in different
branches that are connected to the
energy source.
• When a load does not work in one
branch, the loads in the other branches
continue to function because electrons
can flow through another path.

Parallel Circuits
Ex 1) Draw a circuit diagram showing an electric cell, a switch, and 3 lamps connected in series
Ex 2) Draw a circuit diagram showing a 2-cell battery with 3 lamps connected in parallel. Include a switch for controlling each lamp.
