In this unprecedented showof support for children in more

than 100 countries, the McDon-ald’s family raised more than$12 million to benefit RonaldMcDonald House Charities(RMHC) and other organiza-tions around the world thathelp children.

Here in Hawaii, the more than$20,000 raised on that single

day last year went to RonaldMcDonald House Charities ofHawaii, whose primary focus isthe support of Ronald McDon-ald House, a “home away fromhome” for the families of seri-ously ill or injured children, mainly from neighbor islands, who must come to Honolulu forlife-saving treatment not avail-able closer to home.

This year, McDonald’s is cele-brating its 2nd Annual WorldChildren’s Day, not on a singleday, but over four days, fromThursday, November 20,through Sunday, November 23.It is again an observance of theimportance of children and thework that Ronald McDonaldHouse Charities do everywhere. On the actual World Children’sDay - November 20 - and for thethree days that follow it, Mc-Donald’s restaurants all overthe world will be donating aportion of the money raisedfrom select menu items for the

good of keiki.During this year’s four-day

World Children’s Day event,every McDonald’s restaurant

will donate 10 cents from everyPremium Entrée Salad andfrench fry purchase (includingHappy Meals and Extra ValueMeals) to RMHC. In addition,

McDonald’s Restaurants ofHawaii will make an exclusivecontribution to RMHC of Hawaiiby donating 10 cents from

every purchase of a PortugueseSausage, Eggs and Rice or aSpam, Eggs and Rice breakfastplatter.

Stop by your neighborhood

McDonald’s restaurant from No-vember 20 through 23, and youmay see a celebrity or two be-hind the counter. What’s more,

select McDon-ald’s restaurantson Oahu willhave celebritiesselling editionsof the HonoluluStar -Bu l le t in .Buy a newspa-per from them, and the entirepurchase willbenefit RMHC ofHawaii. Withyour supportand participa-tion, along withthe dozens ofcelebrity volun-teers and othersright here in ourcommunity, wehave the oppor-tunity to helphundreds ofHawaii’s seri-

On November 20, 2002, McDonald’s

Restaurants around the world celebrated

the inaugural World Children’s Day.

WORLD CHILDREN’S DAY-WHAT IS IT?

Dear Friends,

It has been our greatestpleasure getting to know you.We believe our family to havebeen among the luckiest andmost fortunate of those thatwere able to stay at the RonaldMcDonald House.

Since Katrina became ill, wehad nowhere to go when wewere told by her doctor thatshe had to stay on Oahu forthree weeks to continue treat-ment necessary to control theleukemia.

We were able to meet familiesat the hospital from near andfar that had to leave many oftheir loved ones behind whilebeing with the ones that wereill. It made it clear that theRonald McDonald House is soneeded, especially when thereis an emergency in the familyand nowhere to go. This House

is like “home” where you can goand feel the love and support, and where your “worries” are

lifted and your concerns maybe solely based on the ill childand being able to always be by

their side.I have spent many weeks at

the Ronald McDonald House

and there were families thatwere so much worse off than usbut yet there was a closenessamongst all because we all hada place to stay that lifted a lot ofother worries.

Thank you to those who havediligently donated to this wor-thy cause and we pray that this“special” House will always beopen to those who are less for-tunate and in need of support atsuch a traumatic time.

A Grateful family writes…

To provide a home-away-from-home for seri-ously ill children and

their families, and to developother programs and partner-ships aimed at improving thelives of children in Hawaii andthe Pacific.

Adopted, August 30, 2001

Mission Statement Honolulu is the hub for specializedmedical treatment of children, notonly from our own state, but also

from the rest of the Pacific Basin. Eachyear, thou-sands of chil-dren arehospitalizedhere for criti-cal medicalc o n d i t i o n sand many oftheir familieshave suddenlyfound them-selves far fromhome andtheir networkof family sup-port, tryingdesperately tocope with a se-riously or ter-minally illchild. RonaldM c D o n a l dHouse pro-vides for theunique needsof these veryspecial fami-lies.

Since open-ing its doors in1987, thou-sands of families have called Hawaii’sRonald McDonald House their “home-away-from-home.” Built by the love andsupport of a caring community, theHouse is a haven where people canshare their experiences, spend time

with their families, and find support andcomfort from others who are goingthrough similar situations. The Houseembodies the spirit of “aloha and

ohana.” It fostersa nurturing envi-ronment that en-c o u r a g e sparent-to-parentand family-to-family support.Some havestayed a shortwhile; othershave hadlengthy visits.Many have cele-brated success-ful recoveries.Others couldonly cherishwhatever timewas remaining.But all have leftan indelible im-pression. And to-day, this “HouseThat Love Built”continues to res-onate with joyand love, laugh-ter and tears,but above all,compassion andcaring.

The 18 bedrooms available throughRMHC are nearly always full. Overflowguests are housed temporarily at anOutrigger Ohana property through aspecial partnership with that commu-nity-minded company. e

Ronald McDonald House-

RMHC’s cornerstone program

Going Home! The Ngirchechol family bidsaloha to RMH.

The idea of a home for families ofhospitalized children originatedin 1973 in Philadelphia, when Fred

Hill, a Philadelphia Eagles footballplayer, learned that his young daughterKim was critically ill with leukemia. What followed were months of treat-ment at a faraway facility. The Hills, desperate to be with their daughter, andwith nowhere else to go, spent count-less hours at her bedside, napping onchairs and pacing hospital corridors.Out of this experience grew the determi-nation to ease the burden for other fam-ilies in similar circumstances. Hill’sEagle teammates banded together with

local McDonald’s restaurants and theentire Philadelphia community to raisefunds to establish the first Ronald Mc-Donald House – a “home away fromhome” for families of children hospital-ized with serious or life-threatening ill-nesses. The tremendous value andsuccess of the first House sparked inter-est throughout the entire country andabroad. Today, there are more than 200Ronald McDonald Houses throughoutthe world. And what began as oneman’s effort to ease other parent’s pain, has become an enduring tradition oflove and caring. e

Parents and other familymembers that find them-selves at the hospital by

the side of their seriously illchildren feel as though they just

can’t go home-they want to re-main near their precious keiki. But when hours turn into days, lingering uncomfortably in hos-pital units and waiting roomswith little privacy or rest and

not being able to take care ofmany daily activities, it all be-comes incredibly stressful.

This is why RMHC createdthe Ronald McDonald HouseFamily Room inside KapiolaniMedical Center for Women &Children. This comfortable, cozy home-like room, secondsaway from the Intensive Careunits, is a welcomed place ofrespite for these families. Here, weary parents and immediatefamily members may take abreak, rest, gather strength, andhave some privacy or seek sup-port from others who under-stand. Or they may have a biteto eat, watch television, read,

check e-mail and make phonecalls. The sick child is also wel-come with mom or dad. They’llfind comfy couches, games, videos, toys, books, yummysnacks, otherkids to play ortalk with and al-ways compas-sion, warmthand encourage-ment. In this little“home-away-f r o m - h o m e ”they can es-cape their or-deal, even ifonly for a shorttime. It is an ob-

vious extension of “The HouseThat Love Built.”

The RMH Family Room, which opened in January, al-lows RMHC to assist even more

families facing the difficult ex-perience of dealing with achild’s serious illness. It hasbeen especially valuable to fam-ilies from Oahu. e

When the Aina family of EwaBeach checked their sonNicholas into Kapiolani Hospi-

tal for Women & Children for his firstround of chemotherapy they didn’tknow exactly what to expect. As all suchfamilies do, they slowly became awareof the routines of hospital life, what fam-ily strengthening and patient supporttools were available, and how to accessthem. And it wasn’t long before a hospi-tal staffer let themknow about theRMH FamilyRoom.

Nicholas, Randyand Mom Cathywere warmed bythe aloha of theFamily Room andthey made a deci-sion to find a wayto help the facilityso that it could bethere for manymore families suchas them in the fu-ture.

“We began pop-ping in to grab asnack andNicholas foundthat he couldcheck his e-mail acouple of times a day,” said Randy. “Wesaw how valuable the Family Room is.”

To show support of Nicholas andraise money for the RMH Family Room,Randy held a public humiliation sessionat his Edward Enterprises office, allow-

ing dozens of friends and colleagues theopportunity to hack off a piece of histhick hair-in exchange for a donationthat ultimately would be split betweenthe RMH Family Room and KapiolaniHospital.

The results: dad picked up a new “do”and the Family Room received a $1,100contribution. Nicholas seemed amused,a little bit embarrassed and no doubtencouraged by the show of parental

love, and the supportof so many others.

“When I was inpa-tient, the FamilyRoom was a comfortzone for me that tookmy mind off what washappening.” SaidNicholas. “It is just awelcome place to be.”

Nicholas, kept upwith his collegeclasses during his en-tire medical challengewith the help of pro-fessors who e-mailedhis assignments tohim via the FamilyRoom. Today he is atypical sophomore at

the University ofHawaii.

“I’m at that pointwhere I have to decide what I want todo. Choosing the right major is critical,”said Nicholas. “I’m leaning toward anursing degree, and a big part of the rea-son is my experiences while beingtreated for cancer.” e

At night when the lights go out in the

18 guest bedrooms at Hawaii’s Ronald

McDonald Houses, and weary parents

leave their child’s side at the hospital and

head home to rest, not everyone is able to

sleep. Moms and Dads are often kept

awake worrying about their children’s

health and quietly facing the realities of

their family’s sudden upheaval. No one can

take away concerns of that nature for fam-

ilies, but we can create a supportive and

nurturing atmosphere for them, and help

them stay together as a family unit during

their difficult challenge. It is what RMHC

Hawaii does every day of the year through

our Ronald McDonald Houses and RMH

Family Room.

Help Make a DifferenceA gift from you today will help families sleep just a little easier during a most difficult time in their lives.A wonderful gesture, worthy of the spirit of the upcoming holidays that center around family.(Please circle or write in your donation amount.)

*For a donation of $35 or more we will send you a VIP USA Fun Pack. It features 100 unique coupons from local merchantsranging from fine and casual dining eateries, fast food restaurants, hotels, retailers, automotive shops and many otherexciting merchants in a convenient checkbook size. The Fun Pack offers you over $1,000 in valuable savings.
