Clifton Park Methodist Episcopal Church (Grooms) Histories

History:

The Clifton Park Methodist Episcopal Church, later known as the Grooms Church, had

its beginning in 1788 as one of six circuits comprising a very large district. The following

year the present congregation was established. The church served as a “mother” church to

the Jonesville Church in 1825, the Mechanicsville Church in 1828, the Newton Church in

1828, the Rexford Church in 1839, the Clifton Park village church, and the Crescent

Church, in 1852. The congregation merged with the Shenendehowa United Methodist

Church around 1957.

The first building was built probably in 1793. It was made of logs and doubled as a

schoolhouse. A second church, built in 1804, was used for 30 years. A third church

building was built in 1834. A plain building with no steeple, painted white, it was known

as “the White Church.” After the congregation merged with the Shenendehowa United

Methodist Church, the old building became a furniture store. It burned in 1975.

History: The Clifton Park Study Group was formed in September 1942 by a group of women in the town, chiefly farm women, who because of the lack of easy transportation and the relative isolation of farm life, felt the need for socialization and intellectual stimulation. The women organized and met monthly at member’s homes. A great diversity of topics and books web were read and discussed at the meetings. Because of the efforts of these women in the Fifties, the Southern Adirondack Library System decided to schedule bookmobile stops in Clifton Park. Stony Creek Reservoir

Papers History: The Stony Creek Reservoir was built in 1952 and completed in 1953. The reservoir is owned by the Town of Colonie and was acquired by that town, after much public debate and litigation, by eminent domain and by private sale of lands. The reservoir was opposed by the Clifton Town Board and by many residents of the towns of Colonie and Clifton Park, especially residents of Vischer Ferry, where the reservoir was to be located. The residents sent petitions to the state government to oppose the construction and brought suits against the town of Colonie, but ultimately lost the battle against the reservoir. The opposition in Vischer Ferry was led by three residents, A.C. Stevens, Chester Hall, the owner of the Francis Vischer historic home and Howard Becker, the Town Historian and the owner of some land that was impacted by the dam and reservoir. Residents suggested the Ranney plan as a source of water rather than the reservoir. The Vischer house was moved to Menands, NY. The construction also caused the loss of Van Vranken Road, the oldest road in the town of Clifton Park. Scope: This collection includes a variety of material that provides substantial documentation of the public fight over the construction of the dam and reservoir. It includes court documents, petitions of opposition to the reservoir, correspondence, publications and reports related to water supply, reservoirs and dams, maps, resolutions against the reservoirs, photographs, and minutes of meetings of Clifton Park Protective Association (opposition to dam/reservoir). VISCHER FERRY CIVIC ASSOCIATION

Collection

History:

This long-lived organization was active and influential in the Town of Clifton Park.

Formed in 1973, it continued until c.1995. By-laws established the name as The Vischer

Ferry Civic Association (VFCA) but the organization was also referred to as the Vischer

Ferry Association (VFA).

The VFCA engaged in many civic and social activities. One major focus was on local

history. In addition to social notes and notices of the many functions it sponsored, its

newsletters contained essays on the history of Vischer Ferry, many by Clifton Park Town

Historian John Scherer. The Association was instrumental in having the hamlet of

Vischer Ferry placed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1975. Members were

also directly responsible for the establishment of the Vischer Ferry Nature and Historic

Preserve in 1977 and continued in an advisory capacity after it was established by the

Town of Clifton Park. Major undertakings for VFCA members were the many events of

Canal Days, held annually from 1975 to 1983. The group became involved in a number

of civic issues, notably that involving the excavation of a gravel pit virtually within the

hamlet of Vischer Ferry.

Scope:

This collection contains materials from the donors listed below, most of whom served as

officers for the Association. Several kept folders of information on specific issues that

they were personally involved in. Copies of annual reports on the Vischer Ferry Nature

and Historic Preserve were added from the Library’s Vertical File.

As materials were in disarray, they were sorted and an order has been imposed on them.

The collection begins with Administration and Membership documents and Publications

and Vischer Ferry Nature and Historic Preserve documents. Canal Day materials include

notes kept by those running the day’s events as well as pamphlets produced for the event.

Size: 5 boxes, 5 lin. Ft.

Donors: Joanna Smith, Evelyn Dash, Ernest and Pat Haffner, Frances M. and Herman L.

Finkbeiner, George Bonino and Peter R. Borrelli and John Scherer.

VISCHER FERRY COMMUNITY ASSOCIATION

Collection

History:

The Vischer Ferry Community Association was active between 1950 and 1956. This

group used School No. 3, the one-room schoolhouse in Vischer Ferry, no longer used as a

school after the consolidation of the Shenendehowa Central Schools, for a meeting place

and for a library. This volunteer free library, opened in January of 1950, was a great

success. In 1953 this small library had circulated 1262 books. In October of 1950, the

Association mailed letters to those in the tax district for School No. 3 asking residents to

donate their tax refund from the surplus of the School District to the Association for the

purpose of acquiring the school for a Community Hall. When auctioned, however, the

building was sold to a private citizen.
