Amino Acid Structure

From DNA a strand of mRNA is transcribed. This mRNA is read by a ribosome in the cytoplasm which in turn constructs the appropriate protein sequence with the help of specific tRNA’s. What is the protein constructed of? _________________ Amino Acids

How many amino Acids are there? _______20

Today your going to take a look at the structure and properties of each of the twenty amino acids. Go to the following link to complete the assignment below.LINK: http://wiki.cmbi.ru.nl/index.php/Amino_acid

In your notes:1.Provide a basic description of an amino acid (be sure to describe the general structure and the specifics of the peptide bond involved)2.List all twenty of the Amino Acids, give a description of their properties and draw a line figure of it’s chemical composition in your notes

Alanine

Questions:1.In your notes draw the resulting structure from a dehydration RxN between Glycine and Serine2.Now the resulting structure from a dehydration RxN between Aspartic Acid and Asparagine

Protein SynthesisUp to this point we have discussed:

•DNA and the transcription of DNA into a resulting mRNA strand.

•We have also covered Translation which is the synthesis of a protein from the instructions of mRNA. This synthesis is completed by the ribosome with the help of tRNA’s which bring the appropriate amino acid to the ribosome to be added to the protein being created.

•We have covered amino acid structure and the dehydration reaction which occurs allowing each amino acid to be added to the protein being synthesized

• We have also started to look at mutations…

today we will continue to look at different mutations and their effect on the completed protein structure

There are 15 genetic disorders listed on this web site. For each of the disorders get a brief overview of the disorder from the “what is it page” and then in your notes indicate the following for each of them: What causes it, How is it inherited and How is it treated.
