ACQIP Exercise I:Vaccine Storage

ACQIP, the American Academy of Pediatricsnew Ambulatory Care Quality Improvement Pro-gram, launched its first exercilse in September to2,000pediatricians. Pilottestedfortwo years in 170pedilatricians' offices in tree states, ACQIP 'ismodeled after the continuous quality improvement(CQI) concept thiat has been 'implemented success-fully in HMOs, hospitals, and physician's offices.ACQIP appl'ies thie CQI concept to pediatnicians'offices. The program is designed to assistpediatrician subscn'bers in evaluating theirpracticesby comparingthemselves withtleirpeers nationallyand in similar practices at the state level.

Each quarter, particilpating pediatricians are sentan exercise to be completed by the physician orhis/her staff. Exercises are retumed confidentiallyto the Academy so thiat individuals and summarygroup informnation can be generated for participants.Charts and graphs and a brief written report on thevariation in responses are provided, along with a setof"QualityPointers" addressingtheareaofpracticedealt within the exericse and extra resources. The Practitioner Research Award was established to providesuitable recognition to a full-time practitioner responsible for a majoradvance in pediatrics.

With this notice we are inviting the nominations of candidatesfor the Practitioner Research Award. We will present this awardat the October 1993 Annual Meeting of the AAP.The Practitioner Research Award provides an honorarium of

$1,500. The award also includes round trip tourist class airfare,two days lodging, plus all actual expenses incidental to attendingthe meeting.

Criteria for receipt of the award are as follows:*The candidate should have spent at least 80% of his/her

time in patient care in a non-academic practice at the timeof research.

*Research must be done in an office setting and priority willbe given to general pediatricians.

*The research initiated and conducted by the awardee musthave been published in peer-reviewed publications.

*The candidate should be a fellow of the Academy and livingwhen selected.

The award is not intended for a group or a practice but for foran individual fellow.

Nominations for the AAP Practitioner Research Award will besolicited up to January 29, 1993. Separate letters should be writtenfor each nomination. The letter should briefly state the 'work for'which the award might be granted and should includethe candidateIscurriculum vitae as well as one copy of at least one but no morethan five different reprints representing the candidate's work. Theemphasis of the award is on quality, not quantity. If a critical paperis in press, a copy of the manuscript should be included. Sponsoringletters are encouraged but not required.
