Location: Brownstone, 455 River Parkway, Idaho Falls, Idaho Speaker: Corrie Nichol, Ph.D., Idaho National Laboratory Idaho-Montana AWS section members are invited to attend the May informal technical seminar series event “Brew with the Crew*” organized by the INL’s Instrumentation, Controls and Intelligent Systems (ICIS) Distinctive Signature, the Eastern Idaho Section of the Institute for Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE) and the Idaho Falls branch of the Instrumentation Society of America (ISA). Corrie Nichol will discuss advances in technology for video games that have made a broad array of haptic feedback devices available at low cost. This presents intriguing possibilities for use of haptic feedback for a variety of potential end uses, including robotic welding. Corrie Nichol, Ph.D. is a Research Engineer at the Idaho National Laboratory. He is the Principal Investigator on the Haptic Interface for Remote Arc Welding project. He was a key member of the design team for the welding and inspection robotic system for the Yucca Mountain Project Waste Package Closure System. He has also been involved with research on friction stir processing. Prior to joining INL, Dr. Nichol worked as an independent consultant on the Vecna Technologies BEAR robot *Brew with the Crew is an after work event, that takes place every third Thursday of the month at the Brownstone to provide an opportunity for instrumentation, control and intelligent systems researchers and practitioners to interact with others in their community. June 2009 Technical Meeting: Tour of the Center for Advanced Energy Studies and Presentation on Current and Future Nuclear Reactor Concepts – June 11 Date: Thursday, June 11, 2009 Time: 3-4 PM CAES tour 4-5 PM Nuclear Reactor Concepts Location: Center for Advanced Energy Studies (CAES) facility at 995 University Blvd, Idaho Falls, ID. Directions: University Blvd. is located just north of INL’s Engineering Research Office Building [EROB]. Turn onto University Blvd. and the CAES building is the last facility at the end of the road. Just find an open parking space in the lot adjacent to CAES and assemble in the main lobby. Come through the front doors located by the flag pole. This is your chance to tour the Center for Advanced Energy Studies and find out about both the facility and CAES programs. CAES is a public/private partnership between INL and Idaho’s three public universities – Boise State University, Idaho State University, and the University of Idaho. Research programs focus on nuclear science and engineering materials science, bioenergy, carbon management, and energy policy. Following the CAES tour, attendees will have the opportunity attend a presentation on current and new reactor concepts. Dr. Harold McFarland of INL’s Nuclear Science and Technology group will bring us up-to-date on reactor technology as well as provide an overview of future reactor concepts. Section News Thanks to Dr. Bruce Madigan and Dale Detrick for an excellent section meeting held on February 19, 2009 in Butte, Montana. Bruce hosted the meeting and provided an informative tour of the Montana Tech’s welding facilities. Dale Detrick of the Montana Manufacturing Center updated attendees on welding related manufacturing in Montana. Thanks again to our speakers for sharing welding information with the large number of welding students and section members who attended.
