Leading education destination

Based on the Institute of International Education, Open Doors Report 2014-2015, it is reported that there are 974,926 international students in the USA. In 2013 itself, 6791 students from Malaysia were transferred to American universities, as quoted by the Malaysian American Commission of Education Exchange (MACEE). As an international student, you will have the opportunity to interact with people from different walks of life. This exposure will not only enrich your life both personally and academically, but will also help you learn about international diversity.

Holistic and flexible education

American education is known for its flexibility and its holistic approach. Students will be exposed to a wide range of subjects in English, Arts and Humanities, Science and Social Sciences. This gives students a strong foundation prior to choosing their major. A “major” is the specific field of study where the degree is focused on; such as Communications, Psychology or Business. American programs are flexibly designed to allow students to switch their majors even after a number of subjects. Hence, students can customize their degree to their interests and strength.

Conducive study environment

Small class sizes are common in most American universities. There may be as few as 10 to 20 students in a class, giving students the personal attention they need. The atmosphere is usually dynamic in classrooms where students are encouraged to contribute to discussions and give presentations. Assessments are mainly coursework based, followed by examinations. The coursework usually consists of participation, term papers, projects, quizzes and presentations, thus giving students a better opportunity for continuous learning.

PURSUING YOUR AMERICAN DREAMWith SEGi’s American Degree Program, students can obtain their American degree and complete the full program here, via our 4+0 option or tranfer to the USA through our 2+2, 1+3 option to gain exposure. It is also an affordable alternative for those who wish to earn an American degree and gain an all-rounded experience.

So, why choose the American Degree Program?

The USA is one of the leading providers of higher education in the world, where an American degree is recognized around the world for academic excellence and enhanced learning experiences. The USA is also the home to many top universities, where 17 American universities are listed in the top 25 universities in the Times Higher Education World University Rankings 2015 - 2016.

Hence, pursuing an American degree will provide a myriad of opportunities that will open the door to a rewarding career.

WORLD RENOWNED UNIVERSITY PARTNER

SEGi partners with international universities of great repute to offer a globalised learning experience for our students. Programmes offered by our university partners are regulated by them on a regular basis,

thus ensuring the exact same quality of education that students will obtain at their main campus.

Troy University

Troy University’s tradition of teaching excellence dates to its founding on February 26, 1887, when an act of the Alabama Legislature established Troy State Normal School as an institution to train teachers for Alabama’s schools. Joseph Macon Dill was the institution’s first president. In 1893, the school was renamed Troy State Normal College.

The Normal College offered extension courses for teachers and granted teaching certificates until 1929, when the State Board of Education changed the charter of the institution and renamed it Troy State Teacher’s College. That same year, the college moved to its present site and the first two buildings were dedicated: Shackelford Hall, named for Edward Madison Shackelford, president of the school from 1899-1936, and Bibb Graves Hall, named for David Bibb Graves, Alabama’s “education governor”. Governor Bibb Graves is also remembered for commissioning the Olmsted Brothers architectural firm of Brookline, Massachusetts, to design the campus landscape plan.

Like many American universities, Troy State Teacher’s College enjoyed one of the most prosperous periods of growth in the years following World War II when returning veterans took advantage of the GI Bill. The enrollment of the College increased and this growth led to the introduction of degree programs in disciplines other than education, most notably in business. In 1957, the State Board of Education recognized this expanded role and dropped “Teacher’s” from Troy State College’s name.

The decade of the 1950s also marked the University’s long relationship with the United States Military, as extension courses were offered on nearby bases, first at Fort Rucker, near Dothan, and later at Maxwell Air Force Base in Montgomery. A separate Troy State College teaching center was established at Fort Rucker in 1961, which evolved into the present-day Dothan Campus. A similar center, begun at Maxwell Air Force Base in 1965, led to the creation of the present-day Montgomery Campus. These programs were the forerunners of the modern Troy Global Campus division of Troy University, which operates all Troy teaching sites outside of Alabama. In 1973, the University opened sites at military bases in Florida. Today, Troy Global Campus operates more than 60 sites in 17 U.S. states and 11 nations.

In 1967, Gov. Lurleen B. Wallace appointed eight members to the newly established Troy State College Board of Trustees, removing the institution from the control of the State Board of Education. One of the first acts of the new board was to recommend the change of the name to Troy State University. The new name became official on December 14, 1967.

In 1975, the Phenix City Campus was opened as a branch of the main campus.

In 1982, the Troy State University System was formed, as the campuses in Dothan and Montgomery were granted independent accreditation status. In April of 2004, the Board of Trustees voted to drop “State” from the University’s name to better reflect the institution’s worldwide mission. Starting August 2005, all Troy campuses were again unified under one accreditation.

Council for Higher Education Accreditation

A national advocate and institutional voice for self-regulation of academic quality through accreditation, CHEA is an association of 3,000 degree-granting colleges and universities and recognizes 60 institutional and programmatic accrediting organizations. It is governed by a 20–person board of college and university presidents, institutional representatives and public members. Recognition is the scrutiny and affirmation of the quality of regional, faith-related, career–related and programmatic accrediting organizations. CHEA is the only non-governmental higher education organization in the United States that undertakes this scrutiny. The federal government, through the U.S. Department of Education, conducts governmental recognition reviews.

Accreditation Council for Business Schools and Programs

Troy University, through its Sorrell College of Business, is nationally accredited by the Association of Collegiate Business Schools and Programs (ACBSP) to offer baccalaureate degree programs in accounting, finance, general business, information systems, management and marketing.

Southern Association of Colleges and Schools

Troy University is accredited by the Commission on Colleges of the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools to award associate, baccalaureate, master’s, education specialist, and doctoral degrees. The Southern Association of Colleges and Schools (SACS) is one of the six organizations recognized by the United States Department of Education and the Council for Higher Education Accreditation. This agency accredits over 13,000 public and private educational institutions ranging from preschool to college level in the Southern United States.

The American Degree Transfer Program offers an accessible transfer pathway for students who wish to study in the USA. Students can opt for a 2+2 or a 1+3 study pathway and continue their studies in any of our list of universities. The ADTP is structured based on the assessment methods, delivery methods, and teaching approaches practised by American universities. This will be a stepping-stone for students, so when they transfer to the respective American universities, they will be already accustomed to such approaches. Assessments are based on 70% coursework and 30% final examination. Students will be exposed to a range of subjects in English, Communication, Arts, Mathematics, Sciences and Social Sciences before moving on to their majors. ADTP offers tracks in Psychology, Business Administration and Communications. From these tracks, students can focus on the following majors/concentrations; such as Communication Arts, Broadcast Journalism, Multimedia Journalism, Psychology, Global Business, General Economics, Finance, Marketing, Management and Human Resources Management. The ADP office also offers counselling services to students on how to select universities according to their needs such as choice of majors, tuition fees, cost of living and preferred area. They will also provide guidance on the application process to their universities of choice.
