American Legion Post 66
The Alert Newsletter
Issue #122 Green Valley/Sahuarita AZ March—August 2018
Commander’s Corner
Hi! My name is Tom Curran, and, as most of you know, I am your new Commander. We have reached our goal of 100% mem-bership, and I would like to thank Pat Pitrello and Diane Fitzgarrald for their hard work and making it possible. Don’t forget that nominations for officers is in March, and the election is in April. The Post’s 50th Anniversary party was on Feb. 18. So it has already happened before this went to print. I hope you all attended and I am sure we all had a great time! We have a new fan in the outside awning for the steak night workers. The Legion had a “Sock Hop” and it was a great success….a good time was had by all! Please remember that Post 66 is a private club, licensed by the State of Arizona. All pa-trons are required to have a valid 2018 card on their person at all times, or be a bona fide guest of a member. Spouses that are not members must be signed in as guests. And, of course, no outside alcohol may be consumed on the premises.
For God and Country Tom Curran, Commander
Next Legion meeting: Tuesday, March 13, 2018 at 2 pm Next District meeting: Sunday, March 18, at Post 7 at 2 pm.
FROM THE ADJUTANT:
I would like to thank all the volunteers who made our 50th Anniversary party a huge suc-cess. The lounge was beautifully decorated by Gloria Gadway and Jackie/Less Harding. Music and video was Tom Freestone, working the prize tables was Cathy Wilson and Tony Kopas. The wine/glasses were done by Mary Lucas and Jan Christenson designed the t-shirts. A very special thank you goes to Diane Fitzgar-rald, who not only designed our new license plates, but also helped me put the day togeth-er. Thank you, the members, for making this a very special day to remember. Next, I would like to remind our members that the card check on Friday nights are being done so that we limit the number of guests brought into the lounge leaving more room for you. Prior to the one member-one guest rule, we were getting as many guests as members. Since the new rule was instituted, it seems to be working well. Remember, we are a private club so be proud to show your card and please respect our volunteers working the doors. Last, as the Commander stated in his article, we did reach 100% membership. The SAL are at 94% and the Aux. at 87%. We are the 3rd largest Post in Arizona with over 1450 regular members, almost 900 Auxiliary and around 390 SAL.
For God and Country Pat Pitrello, Adjutant

SAL (Sons of the American Legion)
Greetings from S.A.L. Commander Joe Miller Thanks for the opportunity to connect with you again. Many of you have been attending our S.A.L. meetings this year and your attendance is much appreciated. All of the work we do totally depends on your participation. We (The Squadron E-Board) need your input and often times, your vote, to accomplish the good we do for our veterans and our community—things like: donations to the com-munity food banks, Fisher House, Toys for Tots, Ayuda (Veterans Dental Assistance Program) and the Southern Arizona Veterans Volunteer Service. Some of you may have forgotten to RENEW YOUR MEMBERSHIP this year. I wouldn’t want you to miss any opportunities or benefits afforded you by being a MEM-BER OF OUR AMERICAN LEGION FAMILY. Should you need assistance of any sort to make that happen please contact me (Joe Miller) at the e-mail address and phone number listed at the bottom of my article. One of the major things I believe in is communications. Recently, our Squadron donated a 65 inch flat screen TV and mounted it in the Post’s library. It’s not there for us to catch the newest NETFLIX, but for communication dur-ing meetings including the latest Legion information and education. I can’t stress enough how important it is to know your organization and for those who do, we are obli-gated to spread the word. This TV is available for use by the leaders of all the American Legion Family at Post 66. I hope you take advantage of it as it has a wireless comput-er hook-up function or, if needed, two HDMI outlets (for input) mounted in the wall under the set, for input of your computer and our new DVD player, also for your use. Last word: if you haven’t signed up to be nominated as an officer in the S.A.L., make sure you do as elections are coming up and your talent is needed. For communications from me, please provide me with your email address and I will include you in all periodic communications.
For God and Country Joe Miller, Commander

2017-18 POST 66 OFFICERS
We are having several issues with members signing in people who just come up and ask to be signed in.
This does not constitute a bona fide guest.
If you are found signing in some-one who comes in and asks you and you did not invite them, your mem-bership is subject to suspension.

Poppy Campaign The Post 66 annual Poppy Cam-paign to remember our disabled and needy veterans, as well as the widows and children of deceased veterans, is underway. This year’s campaign will end March 31. Last year our Post family supported the South-ern Arizona VA Hospital in Tucson, the Fisher House, hospice needs, veteran sports competi-tions such as wheelchair games, the homeless pro-gram, patient crafts and more. We take pride in being able to assist our veter-ans and feel our poppy money is put to good use. If you can’t find your form, forms are available by the sofas in the library. A poppy donation certificate will be placed on the wall in the lobby during March acknowledging contributors (but not amounts). We thank our entire Post family for their contin-uing support of our veterans and their families through our annual Poppy campaign.
Adjutant Pat Pitrello greeted Dept. Commander Domingo Bonilla and his wife , with Finance Officer Gary Hoffman looking on. Pat
was the moderator for the festivities.
