SLO Legion News [email protected] August 2017 LEGION NEWS SAN LUIS OBISPO POST 66 August 2017 COMMANDERS CORNER Our new fiscal year started off with a BANG. Well over 100 people came to our first 4th of July Celebration and our member/guest dinner. Seven of our Marine Corp members were presented with a “Quilt of Valor” and John Archuleta won the “Marble Raffle” for $1,021.00. July continued on with Monday socials and a great second dinner on the 26th. The Legion District 16 meeting included the induction of Janice Somers as the Vice Commander of the District and Glenda Powell as the District Vice President for the Auxiliary. Congratulations. Commander Dan ADJUTANT’S MESSAGE July 1st is the beginning of the new Legion year, so you will begin getting notices from the American Legion about membership renewal. This is for the 2018 Legion year which starts 1 July. You have some payment options as always, if you are of the computer world the easiest is to go to mylegion.org and pay online. You can send a check with your renewal notice or there is the ever-popular cash at the Post. This year’s membership dues are still $45.00. Starting off the 2018 year we currently have 122 paid members, which means we have 416 unpaid members. Not to worry as the American Legion Nation just sent out 2018 renewal notices so one number will go down and the other will go up. The super good news is that the first couple of weeks in July have produced seven new members. In order to maintain our membership I challenge each of you to recruit a new member this year. We all know of fellow Veterans out there who would make excellent Legion members. Bring them to a dinner or a Monday night social and let’s show them what we are about. If you need a Legion name tag please call the Post and leave the information or call me 440-1551. NEW LEGION MEMBERS Michael Belloumi—Army, Vietnam Jill Edwards—Air Force, Lebanon/Grenada Wallace English—Air Force, Korea Jorge Gonzales—Army, Persian Gulf James Lowe—Navy, Vietnam G. Richard Potter—Air Force, Vietnam Dennis Rivers—Marines, Persian Gulf If you have any questions or looking to help out at the Post let me know. Rich Powell, Post Adjutant Keep the Faith AMERICAN LEGION RIDERS CHAPTER 66 First of all, the American Legion Rider meeting time has changed to 1730 hrs. (5:30 PM), still on the first Wednesday of the month. This allows us to conduct meetings without tabling issues due to the 1900 hr. Post meeting. Next, at the 2017 American Legion Riders Convention, the question was asked, "If your ALR Chapter were to cease to exist would your home town notice"? I have been giving this challenge a lot of thought. The state has several American Legion Posts having problems with a "Legion vs. Riders" mentality. I am very happy to report Post 66 is not one of them. Yea, there was a short period of time where some "Ole School" Legionnaires weren't too sure about a bunch of "Bikers" hanging around their Post. With a lot of hard work, the Riders quickly changed their attitude. These "Bikers" started participating in fundraisers; Welcome Homes for our Brother/Sisters in Arms; seeing home our fallen to "Post Everlasting," with full honors; supporting Post events; and even being responsible for events that led up to the purchase of the Post's new refrigeration units in the bar. Then I asked myself, "How active are ALR members within our Post? Well, that didn't take that much thought. Chapter 66 Riders have only been chartered for five years, yet are holding some major offices at the Post. Let's just start with Post 66's Post Commander, First Vice Commander, Sgt. at Arms., and at least two Executive Members, not to mention the SALs Commander, Adjutant, and Chaplin; yes, they are all ALR members. So, if the Riders were to dissolve and cut all strings, the Post would definitely notice. But what about our community? Over the last few years, I have seen the Post step up to the 9/11 ceremony; Fourth of July Open-House at the Post; and yes, the pancake breakfast. As Riders, SALs, Auxiliary, and Legionnaires, our next step is to establish an even higher profile within our community at large. That way, when we ride through town, we are recognized as the "Good Guys" who are still serving… Don Marriott, President Chapter 66 American Legion Riders AUXILIARY Here’s off to a fabulous new year and congratulations again to all of the new officers in the Legion family. Our new fiscal year began on July 1st, 2017. Please send your dues of $35 to Glenda Powell at the Post address. Reminder, our monthly business meetings are held on the 1st Wednesday of the month at 5pm at the post. We encourage everyone to attend our business meetings, Monday night socials and Post dinners. We look forward to seeing you at the Post. For God and Country, Lindi Woods, Auxiliary President CHAPLAIN’S CHAT My youngest son, who is in the Army, will be deploying to Afghanistan shortly. This got me thinking about our Legion motto – beginning with – “for God and Country.” As Veterans, we have put that into practice quite literally; and many of our sons, daughters, family and friends continue the commitment for God and Country. It is up to us, the Legion family, to whole heartedly, support those who are carrying on those beliefs and commitments that have made our Country so remarkable. So, as Chaplain, I would like to remind all of you to not only think well of our active Military, but to write them, send them care packages – keep informed on what they are doing; and to pray for their well-being on a regular basis. Peace be with you. Bart Topham, Chaplain
