Happy New Year!Step to the music you hear.
~Henry David Thoreau
A New Year’s Wish for Mindfulness andGratitude in 2017
Tomorrow, is the first blank page of a 365-page book.Write a good one. Brad Paisley
My wish for 2017 is very simple. Two things: First, tobe mindful so I can practice moment-to-momentawareness in my everyday activities, so I will not
waste a single day. To be mindful so I can free myselfof the sadness and guilt of the past and the worries
and anxiety of the future. To be mindful so I canexperience in complete fullness the miracle of being
with my family and friends.Second, to be grateful so that I always know how
incredibly lucky I am. To be grateful, so that I will nothave worry and fear, or at least less often. To be
grateful so that I can be happier. To be grateful, sothat people around me too, will learn to look for the
positives. To be grateful so that each new experienceis joyful instead of anxious.
Be mindful, and live every moment. Be grateful, andmake every moment good. Wishing you a fresh start, renewed energy and confidence, and a very safe New
Year. What are your New Year’s Wishes?

The Wellness Centerand Crystal HomeHealth offers free
medical equipmentsafety checks. Like
any mechanicaldevice, with use,
canes, walkers, andwheelchairs mayneed adjustmentfrom time to time.
Parts get broken orbent, pieces get old,and your gut feelingtells you that your
device is in need ofsome TLC. Routine
maintenance for yourassistive devices is
vital; it’s just likemaintenance for your
vehicle. A poorlyadjusted cane or
walker, or any devicethat isn’t operatinghow it should, canput a person at risk
for falls or otherproblems. Walker
and cane checks canbe set up by eithercalling or visiting
Diane in the WellnessCenter or stop into
the Therapy Room onthe third floor and
talk with Tristan, thephysical therapist.
Their goal is to helpyou walk away a little
more safely thanwhen you came in.
Cedarlake Cares Stars ofHope 2016
Lend a helping hand to someone lessfortunate than you. Be a small part of
something big to benefit anotherperson. We have the perfect meeting for
just this kind of work that has suchgreat potential. Our outreach meetingsare held once a month and listed in the
monthly calendars. Together, webrainstorm and decide how to best helpothers who need help. This past holiday
season, our residents at AmericanHouse Cedarlake shopped, purchased, and wrapped gifts for seven people in
the surrounding areas. (four seniorcitizens, and two children and their
mother). Cedarlake Cares also donatedenough chocolate for a treat to those
having dinner at the Mission in Joliet onChristmas Day. Our outreach programalso donated to the humane society.
Thank you for all you do and thank youin advance for coming to the upcomingmeeting and getting involved! What a
great way to start your new year!
Goodbye, Dry SkinWinter’s cool, dry air can leave
skin rough and itchy. Take thesesteps to banish dry skin:
Bathing. Hot water can zapskin of essential moisture, sotake lukewarm showers andbaths, and limit them to10 minutes or less. Use a gentlesoap and dry off by blottinggently with a towel.
Moisturize. Apply moisturizerimmediately after bathing whileskin is still damp. Try creams orointments, which are thicker thanlotions, and look for productsthat contain shea butter, olive oilor petroleum jelly. Use itthroughout the day, especiallyafter washing your hands.
Hydrate. You’ve probablyheard the expression “You arewhat you eat.” The right nutritioncan hydrate you from the insideout. Drink plenty of water andavoid caffeine, which cancontribute to dehydration. Many fruits and vegetables arehigh in water content, and theomega-3 fats found in foodssuch as salmon, tuna, nuts andolive oil can help your bodyretain moisture.
Heating. Avoid sitting near afireplace, furnace vent or otherheat sources. If possible, use ahumidifier to combat dryindoor air.
Bedtime. Hands and feet areoften the driest parts of the body,so slather them with lotion beforebed. To treat especially dry skin, wear cotton gloves and socksovernight to trap moisture.

Quotes for 2017The world is filled with nice people. If
you can’t find one, be one.Be a nice human.
How you make others feel aboutthemselves, says a lot about you.
Be someone’s sunshine when theirskies are grey.
Do something with great love.See the light in others and treat them
as if it that is all you see.Kindness is a language that the deaf
can hear and the blind can see.We don’t have to agree on anything
to be kind to one another.

Grab a Pen and Get HappyEveryone likes to get a thank-you, but writing
those words to someone can bring bliss as well. Participants in a study wrotethree letters of thanks over a three-week period and afterward, reported morehappiness and satisfaction and less depression. Experts believe the feel-good
reaction comesfrom expressing a heartfelt message and the act
of remembering the gift or kind gesture beingwritten about.
Inaugural EventFranklin D. Roosevelt’s second-term inauguration in 1937 marked the first
time the ceremony was held in January. Previous U.S. presidents took the oathof office on March 4, before the 20th Amendment changed the date to Jan. 20.
