Early Regulation of England

Navigation Acts

In the 1600s England passed a series of acts that restricted the trade of the colonists. Goods were charged a duty, or tax

Navigation Acts were barely enforced

Salutary Neglect

During the 1600s there was a lack of management of the American colonies by Britain.

This allowed American society to become more independent.

Early Rebellion

Britain decided they wanted to begin enforcing taxes

Led to resistance from the colonists and the colonial assemblies

Royal Governors had to face these angry colonists because they were agents of the king.

Bacon’s Rebellion (1676)

Conflict between Virginia frontier farmers and Governor Sir William Berkeley.

Farmers wanted to eliminate the Indian threat on the frontier, but the Gov. refused to agree.

Nathaniel Bacon led rebels into war against the Indians and then against the Governor.

Bacon and the rebels lost.
