NOT A GAME - A STRATEGY
NO ES JUEGO - ES ESTRATEGIA
Even when Heart Disease and Diabetes team up against us, We can still win!
This February, celebrate love with heart health in mind. Especially, since heart disease continues to be the number one killer for both women and men in the US.
Locally, the risk of heart disease is higher than the rate in California, with 6.2 percent of Ventura County adults having heart disease, meaning this aff ects 52,724 residents in our community.
Along with heart disease, diabetes is also a leading cause of death. Diabetes is the 7th cause of death in Ventura County, California and in the nation, according to 2016 data. Having diabetes, even when under control, increases the risk for heart disease and stroke. About 68 percent of people age 65 and older with diabetes will die from heart disease and 16 percent from stroke.
The American Heart Association confi rms there is a strong connection between heart disease and diabetes. For example:
• Adults with diabetes are two to four times more likely to die from heart disease than adults without diabetes.
• Two out of three people with diabetes report having high blood pressure, one of the most signifi cant risk factors for heart disease.
• Almost 30 percent of adults ages 45 to 64 are obese, putting them at higher risk for diabetes, as obesity is associated with insulin resistance.
Looking at the bright side, diabetes is one of the seven major controllable risk factors for cardiovascular diseases. Making use of key strategies you can make lifestyle changes to lower your risk of developing both heart disease and diabetes.
Here are some key strategies to help you lower your risk and create a pathway to prevention:• Maintain a healthy weight. Keep physically active. Eat healthy,
fresh and wholesome foods.• Manage your cholesterol, blood pressure and blood sugar levels.• Quit smoking and avoid secondhand smoke. • If you drink alcohol, drink only in moderation.
This month, we encourage you to celebrate love by taking good care of your heart. You can do this by taking control and managing of your risk factors. By doing this, you can lower the risk for heart disease and diabetes, so that you along with your family can enjoy the beauty of life to its fullest.

February 2020 Health Note
