Festa della Primavera Reception– June 8, 2012

On the evening of Friday, June 8, 2012 at The Columbus Citizens Foundation in New York City, the American Foundation of Savoy Orders hosted its annual spring benefit - Festa della Primavera - under the patronage of Their Royal Highnesses Prince Victor Emmanuel and Princess Marina of Savoy. The Festa’s theme was to commemorate the 650th anniversary of the Supreme Order of the Most Holy Annunciation (the “Annunziata”), the oldest chivalric Order of the Royal House of Savoy. As a special treat, the festivities included a birthday salute to New York Archbishop Emeritus Edward Cardinal Egan, Knight Grand Cross of the Order of Saints Maurice and Lazarus. The reception was hosted by Event Chair and Grand Patron Dama Vivian Cardia. Comm. Marco Grassi, President of the Savoy Foundation, provided a short presentation on the history of the Annunziata featuring a beautiful a display of historic insignia from the private collection of Cav. Gr. Cr. Dott. Robert LaRocca. The event raised funds for the Savoy Foundation’s charitable initiatives, in particular, the Foundation’s education fund to which Dama Vivian Cardia and former U.S. congressman Frank Guarini generously contributed.

Prior to the evening’s festivities, at 4:oo p.m., the American Delegation of the Dynastic

Orders of the Royal House of Savoy held a meeting of its National Council attended by the Delegate Cav. Gr. Cr. Avv. Carl J. Morelli; Vice Delegates Comm. Avv. L’On. Pasquale Menna and Comm. Joseph Sciame; Comm. Marco Grassi, present in his capacity as Savoy Foundation President; Comm. Prof. Eric Ierardi, Special Events Coordinator; Gr. Uff. L’On. Dominic Massaro, Inter-Orders Liaison; Los Angeles Regional Representative Cav. Daniel McClory; Dama di Commenda Mira Zivkovich, the Director of Communications; Mr. Jeffrey Ryan, Recording Secretary and Cav. John Gelati, Assistant Recording Secretary.

The Festa commenced at 6:30 pm with a splendid cocktail reception enjoyed by all

attendees while anticipating the arrival of special guest His Eminence Cav. Gr. Cr. Edward Cardinal EganAt 7:45 pm., His Eminence entered with his assistant Rev. Brendan Fitzgerald and mingled with the other guests and inspected his birthday cake in honor of his 80th birthday anniversary year. The festivities were launched with a welcome speech by the Chairman of the Savoy Foundation, Cav. Gr. Cr. Avv. Carl Morelli, and His Eminence, wielding a U.S Army parade dress ceremonial sword cut the cake. Ms. Cristina Fontanelli, the celebrated Italian- American singer, sang “Happy Birthday” with the crowd joining in. The Cardinal then addressed and amused the group, in both Italian and English, and said that speaking Italian gave him a competitive edge in Vatican circles. Special guests included H.E. Archbishop Francis Chullikatt, Apostolic Nuncio and Permanent Observer of the Holy See to the United Nations and U.S. Congressman Frank Guarini (D. NJ ret), who was also a Patron of this occasion.

During the second part of the evening’s program, all were officially welcomed by Event

Chair and Grand Patron Dama Vivian Cardia followed by introductory remarks of Comm. Joseph Sciame, who introduced the President, Comm. Marco Grassi. Cav. Gr. Cr. Dott. Robert LaRocca was also called to the podium to add his vast knowledge on Savoy historic artifacts to Mr. Grassi’s well chosen remarks on the momentous celebration of the 650th Anniversary of the Annunziata.
