Manny SD Lopez AMERICAN DEMOCRACY AND FOREIGN POLICY The essence of American democracy is like a pendulum that keeps on swinging its weight to certain directions but never unlocks from the centerpiece. The American ideals of liberty, justice and capitalism proscribes the politics in Washington that redounds in all 50 states, and to a practical degree in the context of U.S. foreign policy. The international policy differences between the Democrats and Republicans is at most obscure. The Republiçan majority in U.S. Congress may change the tone, but the State Department will likely keep its course. The U.S. Pacific fleet will sail in line with the established strategic vision. America will relate to the Philippines and the world from the perspective of its national and global interests with pragmatic reference to its ideals. The flexion point will be up to reasonable influence of domestic countervailing interests. The potency of the Filipino-American influence in the U.S. political mainstream is yet to unfold, perhaps in the league of the Jewish lobby. The new generation of Filipino-American leaders who view themselves as colorless, non-tribal and progressive will surely make their mark in the coming decades. Comment:
