•Emigration started at the beginning of the fifties, with the signature of bilateral emigration agreements between Portugal and Canada.•It reached its peak in the last years of 60 and 70. •At the end of the eighties there is a noticeable break.•The Portuguese who emigrate to Canada come from Azores. •There is an estimated population of 506 270 Portuguese individuals in Canada, including the Luso-descendants.
