Greetings Daughters Spring has arrived and FSSDAR State Conference is the big event for DAR this season. We had the largest group from Amelia Island that I can remember - 13 of us - and a great time was had by all! It was especially meaningful for me, because my sister, Betsy Fulford, was with us, her first time at conference. Mom, Betsy, Aunt Ann, Cousin Kitty and I attended the Cameo Club Breakfast where members must be mothers and daughters or grands in DAR at the same time. It was so special to have five of us in the same family there at the same time. And, we were on time at 7 a.m.! Carol Elefterion, Anita Lay and Ann Fontaine were also first-timers. I appreciate the great support you all gave me in my candidacy to become State Curator. DAR Love, Jane Philips Collins April Day Trip The chapter go on the annual day trip on April 17th, so there will be no luncheon meeting. A wonderful trip has been planned for us in Tallahassee exploring our state’s history. We will board a charter bus in the corner of the Lowe’s parking lot at the intersection of SR 200 and Barnwell Road. The bus rolls out of the parking lot at 7 a.m. After touring the old Florida Capitol Building, having lunch at the 101 Restaurant and going back to the Spanish era with a visit to San Luis de Apalachee Mission, the bus will head back to Nassau County arriving at Lowe’s by 6:30 pm. To sign up, or if you have questions, please call Marie Santry at (904) 321-3460 or email her at [email protected] Florida State America History Chairman Carol Sullo, Florida State Regent Donna Cullen, Susannah Gray, and Amelia Island Chapter Regent Jane Collins. Susannah Gray, a 7th grader at St. Michael Academy, was the Florida State Society of DAR American History Essay Award recipient for her grade level. Susannah is the daughter of Robert and Joanna Gray. The essays were written on the subject of “The Forgotten Patriots Who Supported the Struggle for American Independence.” Susannah’s award winning essay was about Deborah Sampson, who dressed as a man to become our nation's first woman soldier. She served in the Fourth Regiment, Massachusetts Continental Line. The photo was taken at the FSSDAR Spring Conference where Susannah received her award. Our chapter is proud to claim NSDAR Organizing Secretary General Jean Dixon Mann. It is very hard

to get her in our group photos, because she has so many responsibilities at conferences.

Jean is posing beside the FSSDAR Insignia Light.

Candidate for the office of FSSDAR Curator, Jane Collins, poses with her campaign managers: her mother Jane Philips and her aunt, Ann Murray.

Regent Jane Collins is all smiles after she was elected to be FSSDAR State Curator. The Florida State Curator serves as a liaison between the Florida State Society Daughters of the American Revolution and the NSDAR Museum at Continental Memorial Hall in Washington DC. As Florida State Museum Chairman, the State Curator supports the DAR Chapter Museum Chairmen as they educate their members on the extraordinary DAR Museum Collections, the current Museum Exhibitions, the Volunteer Museum Programs, and the Chapter Programs given by the State Curator or a Correspondent DAR Museum Docent. The State Curator also encourages members to donate pre-1840 artifacts and to financially support the Museum through “Friends of the DAR Museum” and the “DAR Exhibition Fund,” the sole source of funding for the Museum Exhibits. She encourages the purchase of books from the DAR Museum “Wish List,” to donate to the museum, items from the Museum Gift Store and donations to the “Adopt-an-Object” project. And, she will keep the DAR Insignia Light and bring it to State Conference each year she holds the office. She keeps records of items owned by the state society.

Jane will serve in the administration of State Regent Cynthia Symanek. Better known as Cyndi, they became friends when Jane was Florida Bulletin Chairman.

Children of the American RevolutionThe organizing meeting of the Vaughan-

Organizing President Camille Schnell represented the Organizing Vaughan-Latham Society at the 81st Florida Society Children of the American Revolution State Conference with her parents. She served as the Personal Page to the State President, Kaitlyn Matyskiel. She did an excellent job giving a two-minute report about the events of the Organizing Vaughan-Latham Society. Her favorite activity was helping the President present the awards at the Saturday night banquet and announcing the invitation to the Society's Organizing Meeting.

Flag RetirementIt is time to gather all tired and worn

American Flags and take them to The UPS Store. The chapter will put them to rest with honor and respect at our flag retirement program in June.

American Spirit MagazineThe latest edition of the American Spirit was

the 3rd annual issue devoted to Women’s History Month. One interesting article was “The Harrison Home: Honoring Two Presidents.” Of course, the first mentioned was United States President Benjamin Harrison, but the second was his wife NSDAR President Caroline Scott Harrison. Carrie, as she was called, gave the first public speech given by one of our nation’s First Ladies and it was given at Continental Congress as she served as the first President General of NSDAR.

A talented artist, she designed the French Haviland Limoges china to be used in the White House. She remodeled the White House, supported Women’s Right to vote, and helped John Hopkins Medical School with scholarships under the condition that women would become students. She grew orchids, hence the DAR flower.

coupons, which will be sent to various military bases then made available for military personnel use. Bring your coupons to the May meeting to give to Roxie Kulczynski or Ruth Ellis, or you may leave them in a container near the front door at Marie Santry’s home.
