1. Introduction

McLaren Engineering has been retained to design the piles to secure the floating docks and also is

responsible for a peer review of the floating units loading criteria.

The project includes structural design and drawings for pile systems to secure a new 809 ft long

southern wave attenuator.

The existing wave attenuator will be demolished. New wave attenuator will be 809 ft. long x 13 ft wide. Marinetek will design and provide the floating docks (60 ft long x 13 ft nominal width x 24-

inch depth plus 2-inch nominal freeboard).

2. Reference, Standards and Codes

The design of the structural systems for the project shall be in accordance with the laws,

regulations, ordinances, and industry standards of the federal government and local agencies. The

current issue or edition of the documents at the time of submitting these criteria will apply, unless

otherwise specified. In cases of conflict between the cited documents, requirements of the more

conservative document shall govern.

4. Geotechnical Information

Geotechnical investigation done in September 2018 by Universal Engineering Services. Report

No. 1609761. October 3, 2018. Three (3) borings were done to a depth of 116 ft below water

surface.

� Water depth: 22.0 ft to 24.5 ft.

� The soil characteristics for each boring are shown in Table 2 to Table 4 below.

5. Design Loads

The loads used to design the attenuator piles are presented in this section. Loads provided by

Marinetek in addition to impact and mooring loads calculated by McLaren Engineering.

Marinetek did not provided impact loads in their calculations. Since the ITB1-12 document (Ref. 6)

requested the inclusion of impact in the design, McLaren performed the impact analysis shown in

this section.

Marinetek provided mooring calculations but only accounting for wind speed in one direction.

Therefore, McLaren performed a complete mooring study including winds in all directions from -75

to +75 degrees, in 15 degrees intervals in order to determine the maximum applies mooring line

load. Results are presented in this section

b) Impact Analysis:

The design criteria mentioned in the ITB document- Reference 6 identifies a 563 tons boat

impacting at 2 fps at 45 degrees). As discussed with ATM and Fender Marine the actual largest

vessel is smaller than 250 ft. For analysis a 175 ft (276 tons) is used. Table below calculates the

absorbed collision according to AASHTO (Ref.9)

In order to determine the load that corresponds to calculated vessel impact energy a structural

model in RISA was created (Fig 1). A deflection of 4.2 inches for 101,650 lb was converged to

create the vessel impact energy of 18 kip-ft in the pile/ attenuator system for impact anywhere

except at the ends.

If impact is at the ends of the attenuator, a deflection of 7.3 inches for 58,850 lb. was converged to

create the vessel impact energy of 18 kip-ft in the pile/ attenuator system.

c) Mooring Analysis:

Wind Data:

The mean windspeed is entered in units of knots. Based on Owners Engineer recommendations, a

30 second average wind speed is used in the analysis. Therefore, the 3-s wind gust 86 mph (full

occupancy) was converted to 30-s average wind speed 75 mph, which is 66 knots. Note that the

wind was applied in all directions from -75 to +75 degrees, in 15 degrees intervals in order to

determine the maximum applies mooring line load.

Current Data:

The current velocity is 3.5 ft/s for full occupancy condition, which is 2.1 knots.

Wave Data:

The full occupancy wave height is 2.9 ft, with wave period of 3.1 seconds.

mooring points are 30 ft. apart as indicated in Marinetek drawings

combinations mentioned above.

The following figures show the loads applied to the model and the resulting reactions in each pile

for the design:

Not governing combination to determine pile lateral load since the loads of this combination are all

vertical.

2) U2 = 1.2 D +1.2B+1.2 Be +1.2 C

6. Pile Design

L-Pile models were created with geotechnical properties per report. Load applies is 28.5 Kips for

typical pile and 31.1 Kips for end piles. Free end on the top.

Results are summarized in table below. Following pages include the L-Pile results for each

boring and pile type.
