I.GOAL/MISSION:

Akhtar Saeed Medical & Dental College will endeavor to produce medical and dental graduates competent in cognitive and psychomotor skills as doctors, possessing higher humane qualities, acting as servants of ailing humanity. A beacon of hope and benevolence for the down trodden masses of the society. The college will establish standards of teaching and training of medical students comparable to national and international levels.

An integrated modern cognitive curriculum involving multiple teaching and learning strategies will be practiced for holistic training of patient care meeting international standards.

CONTENTS OF SCIENCE OF DENTAL MATERIALS

The Science of Dental Materials is an applied basic science pertaining to the study of mechanical, physical, biological and chemical properties of materials used in dentistry, emphasizing on materials in association with both clinical and non-clinical aspects. It encompasses study of composition, manipulative techniques, applications of dental materials and the way in which they interact with the oral environment in which they are placed. An understanding of these properties as well as their handling is critical to the selection of dental materials in the field of dentistry.

The objective of teaching Dental Materials is to provide both the scientific background and the practical skills required by students to make the best use of novel and available materials. The course begins with an introduction to the major classes of materials used in dentistry including polymers, metals and ceramics and restorative materials with their properties, manipulation, chemistry, testing methods and subsequent clinical application.

This curriculum has been fabricated and intended so as to promote learning in a consistent and progressive sequence. The focus is Student-centered learning and self-learning and Self-assessment emphasis will be placed on faculty guided self-directed and peer-assisted learning. The curriculum will take account of self-assessment and student feedback. Problem / Task-based Learning will cover much of the student learning and includes specifically designed clinical, scientific and epidemiologic problems that will expedite both teaching and learning strategies

II. SPECIFIC OBJECTIVES :

At the end of the course the students are expected to:(a) Identify and name the dental materials and devices as well as their principles and clinical

applications (b) Appreciate specifically the properties of materials, structure of metals, restorative materials,

prosthodontics materials, impression materials, endodontic materials and dental implants(c) Describe the setting chemistry of dental materials as well as their biological interaction with

oral tissues(d) Manipulate the dental materials in the laboratory and understand the manipulative variables

associated with its setting.
