The Airport Management Council of Ontario (AMCO) has been the premier airport association of Ontario for nearly 30 years. And we’re just getting started! As we continue to grow and expand our resources, our goal remains the same: to represent airports throughout the province and to help foster safer and more efficient operations. Our members include large international airports and smaller aerodromes alike. We work alongside these airfield owners and operators for the betterment of the essential airport infrastructure network, and aviation as a whole. AMCO is a non-profit association headed by an elected Board of Directors, who in turn volunteer their time and expertise, all while still managing each of their respective airports. Under their governance, AMCO has branched out to include businesses that cater to airports, various government ministries, other airport associations, and additional stakeholders within the industry. Taken as a whole, all of these members and affiliate partners create a wealth of knowledge unsurpassed by any other provincial association. In broad terms, AMCO provides three services to its airfield, business, and associate members. Firstly, we are a networking facilitator – the chamber of commerce for Ontario’s airport industry. We allow for the exchange of ideas and resources amongst owners, operators, and entrepreneurs. This in turn ties into our second service, education. Through our workshops, conventions, e-magazines and other publications, AMCO provides the professional development that makes airfields safer, economically viable, and efficient. Lastly, AMCO advocates on behalf of Ontario’s airport industry. We lobby governments, develop policies, and increasingly engage in community outreach. AMCO has been the association that represents the interests of airports and aerodromes throughout the province for the past 29 years, and will continue to be there for them in the future.

Thunder Bay International Airports Authority (TBIAA), in partnership with Northwestern Ontario member air-ports, is proud to welcome AMCO members, partici-pants, and delegates to the City of Thunder Bay to our Airport. July 2014 marked 20 years since the move into the new terminal building. Shortly after, the Airport was transferred to local control with (TBIAA) in 1997; a move designed to capitalize on the Airport’s potential. The Authority’s Board quickly recognized the importance of the Airport to the local and regional economies and set about making sure the Airport was both financially self-sufficient, and an eco-nomic enabler. TBIAA receives no government funding for the operation of the Airport and, to this day, remains the only National airport without a passenger fee. Activity has grown exponentially since those two mile-stones. Passenger volumes have increased from 456,000 that year, to almost 780,000 in 2013. The Au-thority also has three subsidiary companies selling air-port-related technology and expertise across Canada, the US, the Caribbean and overseas. The economic impact of the Airport has grown as well. An economic impact study completed in the nine-ties placed the total economic impact at $156 mil-lion. The most recent study, completed in 2011, calcu-lated that the impact had more than tripled to $569 mil-lion. Total employment has similarly risen from 1,548 to 4,986 full-time equivalent jobs. To accommodate this growth, the Airport Authority and numerous partner companies have continued to invest in the Airport, providing Thunder Bay with quality ser-vice and growth opportunities. Welcome everyone to the 29th Annual Convention and 17

th Annual Trade Show of the Airport Management Council of

Ontario (AMCO). It has been great to see the increasing number of attendees over the past several years. The dedication of so many in attending this event and bringing with them the knowledge and support of the airport industry in Ontario makes for better discussion and learning opportunities for all involved. Attendees at AMCO conventions span many different facets of the industry which only serves to enhance discussions and networking with airport owners/operators, government officials, consultants, equipment sales/designer representatives, technical experts, and many more. At this time I would like to look back at some of the developments over the past year. Safety Management Systems (SMS) continued to be a hot topic throughout 2014 and it was great to get the follow through support from Transport Canada in providing additional information/training sessions. The first session was held in London following the Spring Workshop and was very well attended, the session allowed for a lot of involvement of the attendees which only helped to enhance the learning objectives. The second session is being held following the convention here in Thunder Bay. I would like to take this opportunity to thank the entire Transport Canada team for working with AMCO to provide this valuable training/information. The year 2014 continued to see staffing changes within AMCO, as funding from NOHFC for an internship that Rory Currie filled and assisted AMCO in the necessary research to ensure that all AMCO records and databases are updated for all members and non-members came to end. I would like to thank Rory for his commitment shown to AMCO during his yearlong internship. The expiry of the internship lead to the creation of an Association Co-ordinator position and Administrative Assistant position. Laura McNeice joined AMCO in April as the Association Co-ordinator and Jasen Belanger joined AMCO in July at the Administrative Assistant. I would like to take this opportunity to welcome both Laura and Jasen to the AMCO team. With the addition of Jasen to the AMCO team this lead to the services of Don McAfee as an outside accountant no longer being required, as this was brought into the North Bay office. Don gave many years of dedi-cated service to AMCO and many thanks go to Don for his dedication over the years. With the expanded office staff came the need to expand and redevelop the office layout and this transition has all been completed during this year which will set up AMCO with a strong office resource for many years to come. This of course leads to the staffing announcement of Bryan Avery moving on as Executive Director from AMCO to take a position at the North Bay Jack Garland Airport. Bryan came to AMCO as a young graduate of Georgian College to take on the task of becoming the Executive Director of AMCO. Bryan showed great growth throughout his time at AMCO and became a very valuable part of the AMCO team. Bryan’s dedication, drive, and commitment to AMCO will certainly be greatly missed. I would like to thank Bryan for all that he has done for AMCO and wish him all the best in his new position in North Bay. Focus on AMCO was not lost during the staff changes that occurred, the new staff picked up very quickly and the Spring Airfield Workshop in London was another great success. The E-zine continues to be published quarterly and we encourage you to submit articles for the E-zine. An Airport is Asking and on-line training among other items also continue. Membership growth and maintenance have also continued and it is great to see AMCO exceed 100 members for the past two years straight, this is evidence of the support and commitment of staff under the direction of Bryan Avery. This brings to an end my four years as President of AMCO, it has been a great honour to be the first four year President in

AMCO history. I would like to thank the membership for their confidence in electing me to this position in 2010, 2011 and

for two years in 2012. It has been a great experience and I look forward to seeing AMCO continue to grow. I would like to

thank the Board of Directors and staff for all of their hard work in continuing to build AMCO into a bigger, better, stronger

organization, and thank-you to all members for growing with us and for your continued support.

Northwestern Regional Director’s Report, Duane Riddell Duane Riddell highlighted many updates throughout the region, including Kenora Airshow and their great success, Red Lake and Fort Frances value added services (event hosting) and workshop success that allowed greater staff training in a cost effective manner. Duane also updated on a quiet fire season and set-backs in the resource industry that meant less revenue and budget cut-backs and the well-deserved retirement of George Friesen. Northeastern Regional Director’s Report, Rober t Tyrer Robert Tyrer expressed thanks and appreciation for all those who attend the 2013 convention and tradeshow, mak-ing it a successful event. He mentioned that SMS is a struggle and there is trouble finding funding. He also men-tioned that Timmins and Sault Ste. Marie have additional fire services.

Southwestern Regional Director’s Report, Vernon Dowlath Vernon Dowlath thanked the board and staff for their hard work. Vernon mentioned that Toronto City Center Billy Bishop Aiport won the 10th Globally Airport Pax Skytrax Award serving less than 10 million passengers, Pearson won the Cargo Award. He also mentioned that Hamilton Airport has the support of the federal and provincial gov-ernments and that Fanshawe College purchased the old Jazz hangar. He also mentioned Pickering airport, the SMS implementation concerns/issues and improving pax loads.

Southeastern Regional Director’s Report, Nancy Hewitt Nancy Hewitt highlighted many updates throughout the region; Kingston Airport lengthened their runway, UPS with air service development and MMM group with their $15.9 million expansion of airport infrastructure; Osha-wa Municipal Airport’s 147000 square foot development of hangars, Aviation Limited development and NAV CAN GPS approach published. Nancy looks forward to more development in the future and great to see so much support for a workshop out of the region. Nancy also thanked the staff for a great year.

17 Years of Trade Show Exhibitors

In 1997, AMCO formalized the vendors’ displays that had been set up at previous conventions into a trade show. Since then, many of Canada’s foremost aviation related businesses have showcased strategies; precision engineered, dependable equipment; and, emerging technology to all regions of the province to support Ontario’s airports. The men and women who manage these businesses and the territories that they serve demonstrate the key to on-going achievement: success is dependent upon our relationships. So, on this, the occasion of its 17th annual trade show, AMCO thanks all of those who, through the ups and downs of the Canadian economy, have worked to make AMCO’s trade show strong. Bids are open for the 2017 (Southeast), and 2018 (Northwest), and 2019 (Southwest) conventions. The deadline for accepting bids for the 2017 convention is October 1, 2015. HOST A CONVENTION AND TRADE SHOW ITEMS YES NO

The host community is an enthusiastic and consistent supporter of AMCO.

It demonstrates the hospitality of AMCO members for their colleagues and the industry as a whole.

It demonstrates the ability to produce a local team who, working with AMCO, will:

organize the Sunday events (traditionally an 18 hole golf tournament with prizes for everyone);

organize an airport tour and transportation if required;

choose a local charity to receive donations on behalf of the convention speakers; and,

assist with the organization of the event as required.

In one facility, managed by convention specialists, it has:

115 to 140 guest rooms;

a minimum 7,500 square feet of meeting space in one room;

a state of the art communication system in all meeting rooms;

a creative space that naturally lends itself to providing a backdrop for the camaraderie of the AMCO Hospitality Suite;

space in the facility's parking lot, or other space to accommodate the outdoor component of the tradeshow; and,

other large and small meeting rooms available for additional meetings.

It has a strategy for air and ground transportation for participants.

It has an exciting off site location for the formal dinner which:

showcases the local community; and

sets the stage for outstanding local talent to perform during and following the dinner.

It has the possibility of a spouses' program. While this hasn't been utilized often, we always want to know that it is available.

It has the ability to assist with an application for sponsorship dollars through the local economic development or another office.
