Handling Stress –Pets and the Fourth of July

Holidays are meant to spend with family and friends, and that should include your furry family members as well, right? Well, what you consider to be fun Fourth of July activities (BBQs, outdoor games, and fireworks) may not be enjoyable or even safe for your pet. Here are a few suggestions to help pets stay healthy and happy.

Keep dangerous foods out of reach. Some common BBQ foods, such as alcohol, onions, avocado, grapes and chocolate, can be toxic to pets when ingested. If those items are staples at your holiday gatherings, you may want to ensure that they are out of reach from curious noses. Leave pets at home When your group heads to the park for fireworks, consider leaving your pet at home. The crowds and noises of the fireworks will be much louder at the park and may scare your pet and cause them to run away.

Watch for signs of anxiety. If your pet starts experiencing anxiety, be prepared find a secure location or crate for him or her to relax. Some common signs of anxiety include drooling or licking the lips, whimpering, shaking, pacing and showing the whites of the eyes.

Keep outdoor items away from pets. Make sure that insect repellent, citronella-based candles, and lighter fluid are well out of reach from your pets.

The best thing you can do for your pet on the Fourth of July is find a secure, safe location for them, especially during the firework shows. By preparing ahead of time, you will remain calm should your pet experience anxiety and make the situation smoother for all.

You Might Not Know... Four Facts about the National Anthem

Page 2

1. Francis Scott Key intended his verses to be song lyrics, not poetry.

“The Star Spangled-Banner” was not a poem set to a melody years later. “We know he had the tune in mind because the rhyme and meter exactly fit it,” says Marc Leepson, author of the new Key biography “What So Proudly We Hailed.” The first broadside of the verses, printed just days after the Battle of Baltimore at Ft McHenry, noted that the words should be sung to the melody of “To Anacreon in Heaven,” which was ironically an English song composed in 1775 that served as the theme song of the upper-crust Anacreontic Society of London and a popular pub staple.

2. The flag Key “hailed at the twilight’s last gleaming” did not fly “through the perilous fight.”

In addition to a thunderstorm of bombs, a torrent of rain fell on Fort McHenry throughout the night. The fort’s 30-by-42-foot garrison flag was so massive that it required 11 men to hoist when dry, and if waterlogged the woolen banner could have weighed upwards of 500 pounds and snapped the flagpole. So as the rain poured down, a smaller storm flag that measured 17-by-25 feet flew in its place. “In the morning they most likely took down the rain-soaked storm flag and hoisted the bigger one,” Leepson says, “and that’s the flag Key saw in the morning.”

3. The song was not originally entitled “The Star-Spangled Banner.”When Key scrawled his lyrics on the back of a letter he pulled from his pocket on the

morning of September 14, he did not give them any title. Within a week, Key’s verses were printed on broadsides and in Baltimore newspapers under the title “Defence of Fort M’Henry.” In November, a Baltimore music store printed the patriotic song with sheet music for the first time under the more lyrical title: “The Star-Spangled Banner.”

4. It did not become the national anthem until more than a century after it was written. During the Civil War, “The Star-Spangled Banner” was an anthem for Union troops,

and the song increased in popularity in the ensuing decades, which led to President Woodrow Wilson signing an executive order in 1916 designating it as “the national anthem of the United States” for all military ceremonies. On March 3, 1931, after 40 previous attempts failed, a measure passed Congress and was signed into law that formally designated “The Star-Spangled Banner” as the national anthem of the United States.

THE 12 STAGES OF HEALING STAGE SEVEN: RESOLUTIONWhat most people consider as sickness is usually the body trying, through discharge, to release something it does not want

in order to achieve a new level of health. Discharge is natural, requires no conscious thought, and it’s something we often take for granted. Stage Seven resolves the buildup of tension experienced in Stage Six. The result is resolution.

As good as it feels to discharge something that’s unwanted in our bodies, the relief that comes after releasing an excess buildup of physical and emotional tension can be just as great. Examples of emotional discharge include crying, screaming, or even hitting an object (such as a pillow) to release anger, frustration, or other kinds of emotional tension. Discharge can even be expressed as a fit of laughter, a big smile, or a long sigh of relief. By reaching a state of resolution—which comes as a result of discharge—we feel calm, accomplished, successful, and we may even enjoy a sense of freedom or peace. Stage Seven allows us to become grounded, flexible, and adaptable enough to release the “false” aspects of our being. It is a welcome event that we have expected and prepared ourselves for.

You can read about all of the stages of healing – just come by the office and grab a copy of the book. We highly encourage full understanding of the healing process and we are always here to answer any questions you have.

Protection from Sun DamageSunscreens are products combining several ingredients that help prevent the sun's ultraviolet (UV) radiation from reaching

the skin. Two types of ultraviolet radiation, UVA and UVB, damage the skin, age it prematurely, and increase your risk of skin cancer.

UVB is the chief culprit behind sunburn, while UVA rays, which penetrate the skin more deeply, are associated with wrinkling, leathering, sagging, and other light-induced effects of aging (photoaging). They also exacerbate the carcinogenic effects of UVB rays, and increasingly are being seen as a cause of skin cancer on their own. Sunscreens vary in their ability to protect against UVA and UVB.

Most sunscreens with an SPF of 15 or higher do an excellent job of protecting against UVB. SPF — or Sun Protection Factor — is a measure of a sunscreen's ability to prevent UVB from damaging the skin. Here's how it works: If it takes 20 minutes for your unprotected skin to start turning red, using an SPF 15 sunscreen theoretically prevents reddening 15 times longer — about five hours.

Another way to look at it is in terms of percentages: SPF 15 filters out approximately 93 percent of all incoming UVB rays. SPF 30 keeps out 97 percent and SPF 50 keeps out 98 percent. They may seem like negligible differences, but if you are light-sensitive, or have a history of skin cancer, those extra percentages will make a difference. And as you can see, no sunscreen can block all UV rays. But there are problems with the SPF model: First, no sunscreen, regardless of strength, should be expected to stay effective longer than two hours without reapplication. Second, "reddening" of the skin is a reaction to UVB rays alone and tells you little about what.

UVA damage you may be getting. Plenty of damage can be done without the red flag of sunburn being raised. To ensure that you get the full SPF of a sunscreen, you need to apply 1 oz – about a shot glass full. During a long day at the beach, one person should use around one half of an 8 oz. bottle. Sunscreens should be applied 30 minutes before sun exposure to allow the ingredients to fully bind to the skin. Reapplication of sunscreen is just as important as putting it on in the first place, so reapply the same amount every two hours. Sunscreens should also be reapplied immediately after swimming, toweling off, or sweating a great deal.

Grilled WatermelonThis is a fun way to have a sweet dessert on a summer evening. Nutrition (per serving): 20 calories; 2g carbs Ingredients :

At least 8 slices seedless watermelon, 1 ½ inches thick2 tsp olive oilsea saltfresh ground pepper

Directions:1. Cut the watermelon in half, place cut side down on the table, then cut into slices, about 1 ½ inches thick. Cut each slice in half, creating two wedges (if your melon is really big, you may need to cut each slice into three wedges). Leave the rind on.2. Lightly sprinkle the wedges on both sides with the salt. Stand the wedges on their edges on a rack over a sink or pan and let them drain for half an hour.3. Preheat the grill to high.4. After the watermelon has drained, rinse each piece under cold running water. Place each piece between two folded paper towels and gently but firmly press to remove excess water. You should stop just when you feel the watermelon begin to crunch.5. Brush the watermelon very lightly on both sides with the olive oil. Grill over high heat until grill marks have formed and the melon is slightly softened, about 5 minutes.6. You can sprinkle with sea salt and a little fresh ground pepper and enjoy it straight off the grill or you can get creative and top with feta or blue cheese, mint, basil and balsamic vinegar, or honey and lime juice for example. Have fun!
