TOPIC: The Continuation of National Service Programme in Malaysia ISSUE: Malaysia’s National Service Should Be Continued (Contentions) According to Ninth Malaysia Plan, National service helps to build up character of youths by introducing the training modules that covered areas such as physical fitness and endurance, their roles and responsibilities in nation building and essentials of good citizenship. - (Ninth Malaysia Plan 2006-2010, chapter 14: According to Datuk Abdul Hadi Awang Kechil, National Service Training Department director-general, a study done by physical education experts in Sultan Idris Teachers’ University (UPSI), Tanjung Malim, Perak, 504 out of 1000 trainees who were obese had lost weight during the MNSP’s pilot project. - (The Borneo Post, November 2, 2012) According a research done by Norsyahrina Abdul Manaf, Professor Dr. Bahaman Abu Samah, Associate Professor Dr. Nobaya Ahmad, Associate Profesor Dr. Jamilah Othman, and Dr. Jeffrey Lawrence D’ Silva, lecturers from University of Putra Malaysia (UPM), 227 out of 362 trainees had the confidence to join in the physical activities such as flying fox, abseiling and jungle trekking after the three months’ participation in MNSP. - Norsyahrina Abdul Manaf, Bahaman Abu Samah, Prof. Dr., Nobaya Ahmad, Prof. Madya. According to Fong Po Kuan, Batu Gajah MP, the amount of 22 deaths since the inception of Malaysia National Service Programme (MNSP)

proves that the programme is a threat to the safety and health of those who taking part.

According to Defence Ministry, since the Malaysia National Service Programme (MNSP) inception in 2004, the government had spent RM5.5 billion on the programme with a cost

of at least RM 7300 per trainee.

18 for training for three months which may not be sufficient because they have already have their own mind

According to Mohd Radzi, one of the book author in Dewan Bahasa Dan Pustaka (DBP), Malaysia’s National Service

Programme is inadequate to fully realise the objective to create a sense of security and defence.
