FROM THE PRINCIPAL
ALYANGULA AREA SCHOOL We Learn For Life
Together Respect Excellence Courage Safety
Even though the semester is almost at an end we are still busy preparing for our Athletics Day on Thursday 18th June, with a number of distance running events and field events taking place over the next few days. In an attempt to ensure as many parents as possible can attend the Athletics carnival, we hold the main events in a twilight program from 4pm on the Town Oval. This means that the school day is split, with students attending from 8am to 12.30pm, then they go home to rest up and return to the Town Oval at 4pm to recommence the running events. Thank you to those parent who have returned the forms acknowledging that their children will be leaving school at 12.30pm on Thursday. We hope to see as many parents as possible there to support their children and their sporting house. Please note the canteen is not available on this day and the Alyangula Early Learning Centre is running OSHC care on that day from 12.30pm, please contact them if you require care for your child (8987 7075). Wednesday this week we see student reports being sent home to parents. These reports will give parents an indication on where their child/ren are against the Australian Curriculum for their year level. At this point of the year, teachers are reporting on those areas of the Australian Curriculum that have been taught and assessed. At the end of the year reports will be an indication of where students are against the whole year level standard. If you are away on Wednesday, we are happy to hold the reports at school, for your return, or alternatively post them to you, if you let us know and ensure we have a correct postal address. Next term we have a number of events already planned for students, to take advantage of the dry, here are just a few: Kazuko, Japanese Teacher will visit and work with all classes. School Photos Adidas Fun Run G.E.R.S.A (Groote Eylandt Regional Sport Association) Athletics Carnival One People, One Voice Festival in Umbakumba International Food Festival Pink Stumps Day NT Tennis skill development I would like to acknowledge the hard work and dedication of our staff here at Alyangula Area School. They are high-ly professional in all that they do and deserve recognition for their work. Therefore I am pleased to highlight the National Excellence in Teaching Awards is open until 31st July 2015, if you would like your child’s classroom teacher or educator to be nominated, please talk to a School Council member or contact me directly. Nominations are via the School Council. Due to the wonderful school community that exists here, we have a number of staff that have been part of our school community for a number of years. As part of the NT Department of Education employment conditions this means that they are due Study Leave. An opportunity to increase their skills and take up study in their field of ex-pertise. Vicki Scott our Business Manager and Lorraine McCarthy our Special Education Support Officer are exam-ples of staff that will both be going on Study Leave in Semester 2, returning in 2016. I would like to wish them a safe and successful study break. Just a reminder that the Alyangula Early Learning Centre is operating a Vacation Care Program over the School Holi-days. This program will not be operating out of the school grounds, as they now have a designated house, next to the current location of the Alyangula Early Learning Centre. Please contact them directly for details (8987 7075).

“TOGETHER we, RESPECT ourselves, each other, school and community, strive for EXCELLENCE, show COURAGE in
all situations and demonstrate SAFTEY in all that we do”
Over the school holiday period I ask that parents assist us by reinforcing with students that they cannot come around school buildings after hours or on holidays. I am happy for students and the community to use the basket-ball courts and oval, however, the undercover area and around rooms is out of bounds. This ensures that our grounds are respected and no damage is done to either the buildings or students, when there is no one available to assist. Over the holidays the office will be open for uniforms and new enrolments during the following days (Thursday 16th July 9am to 2pm, Friday 17th July 9am to 2pm and Monday 20th July 11.30 – 3.30pm). Please make an appointment for new enrolments on 89876366. I wish everyone a safe and relaxing school holiday break. I look forward to seeing you back at school on Tuesday 21st July, 2015.

MS1 Cave Painting Excursion
We didn’t know what to expect…soon we were flying over the rocks. I was at the
front of the pack, trying to get there as fast as I could because I was so eager to
see the paintings for the first time… I was surprised they were on the ceilings and
not on the walls. Tallis
We learnt how the paintings came to be and how to be respectful of the place. We
also drew some of the cave paintings that inspired us. Sharmeka
The paintings were amazing! The designs were basic but gave an impressive ef-
fect. Caitlyn
The paintings were awesome and we sketched them in our art book. Sean
The ranger told us the story about the paintings. Shanobi
It was fun at the cave paintings. Mitchell
MS1 Cave Painting Excursion
In the troopy there was a lot of singing, which wasn’t bad, except for ….. who was
singing like a cat dying. Jarred
It was exhausting climbing up the very rocky terrain….I felt exhilarated jumping
across rocks. Mason
I felt privileged to have seen these paintings. Jarrod
Ranger Jennifer told us about the paintings and why they were so special. Aliyah
We were asked to be quiet because it is a sacred place and we had to respect it
because the spirits were watching us. Flynn
The car trip to the caves was wild…there was music flowing through the car and
my bones rattled with enjoyment on the bumpy roads… I was glad to leave with
more knowledge about the cave paintings. Nicole

CRAZY HAIR DAY
Last Friday SRC held a Crazy Hair Day to raise money for the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation. The day
was well supported and it was fantastic to see so many crazy hair styles and lots of colour.
During lunch there was a free disco on offer, which was thoroughly enjoyed by those that attended.
The amount raised to be donated to the Cystic
Fibrosis foundation was $308-60.
Thank you to all the parents and students for supporting crazy hair day.
