Multicultural Recruitment & Outreach UpdatesLori Patton, Director of Multicultural Outreach

Greetings everyone! I hopethat you are all having a fun andrestful summer. I wanted to sharewith you some of the great initiativesthat are taking place with regard torecruiting students of color to IU. Asyou may recall, in previous newslet-ter I outlined some of the things thatwe had hoped to do over the aca-demic year. I ampleased to say thatmany of thoseprograms did takeplace. The follow-ing is a briefsynopsis of some ofthe efforts that wereimplementedduring spring andsummer 2003 forstudents of color. Please note thatthese efforts are notsimply the work ofone office, but acollaborative effort of several officesthroughout the Bloomingtoncampus.

IU Reach — For more than 13years, the Office of Admissions hassponsored IU Reach in April of eachyear. In this program, we invitesophomore high school students tocampus for an overnight visit. Thestudents must be ranked in the top20 percent of their class and berecommended by their high schoolcounselor. The students who partici-pate in the program interact withcurrent IU students, stay overnightin the residence halls, attend a mocklecture from a professor, and partici-pate in other planned activities. Thisyear we hosted students fromthroughout the state and received

media coverage. We will continuewith this program next year and willextend invitations to high schools insurrounding states such as Kentucky,Ohio, Missouri, Michigan, andIllinois.

Shadow Camp — The Office ofCommunity and School Partnerships

hosted more than70 students duringthe Shadow Campprogram. Sevenththrough 11thgraders fromIndiana wereinvited to partici-pate in plannedactivities last April.Highlights in-cluded a brunchhonoring thestudents, a specialsession with theKelley School of

Business, and interaction withfaculty, staff and students. This wasthe first year for the camp and it wasextremely successful!

SUMMER PROGRAMSJunior Executive Institute —Sponsored by the Kelley School ofBusiness, this weeklong program isan opportunity for high schoolsophomores and juniors to learnabout Indiana University and thecareer opportunities in the field ofbusiness. Students stay on campusand participate in a variety ofactivities including tours, seminarswith business leaders, an etiquettedinner, and group presentations. Theprogram took place in June. Ap-proximately 100 students from

Puerto Rico, New York, Kentucky,Indiana, and several other states wererepresented for this program.

Pathfinders Camp — Sponsored bythe Office of Community & SchoolPartnerships, this three-day programallowed seventh through ninthgraders in Indiana to visit campusand participate in a variety ofsessions geared toward collegepreparation and career choice. Theprogram was very successful inhosting about 155 students.

I AM IU — An Exploration ofAfrican American Life. In conjunc-tion with the Indiana Black Expo inJuly, this program was designed togive African American students thechance to hear from current IUstudents about the black experienceat IU. High school juniors andseniors met with academic depart-ment representatives, received aspecial PowerPoint presentationhighlighting social and academicopportunities at IU, and attended aspecial resource fair to learn aboutvarious campus services such ashousing, student activities, andscholarship programs. More than200 students and parents attendedthis event, held at the IndianapolisUrban League.

These are just a few of therecruitment initiatives that are goingon at Indiana University. Stay tunedfor more updates in future ASRNewsletters. As always, alumni are avital key to successful recruitment ofstudents of color. If you are inter-ested in becoming an ASR andworking with recruitment of stu-dents of color, please e-mail me [email protected].

IMPORTANT UPDATES!Things you NEED to know before the fall!

• WOW brochure — hot offthe presses! Thanks to some specialfunding, we were able to have a newpublication created for this fall thatis specifically geared toward therecruitment of high-ability students. We refer to it as our “Wow” piecebecause it is filled with informationabout IU students, faculty, andalumni that make you say “Wow!”

This willoffer us afantasticopportu-nity topresent thehigh-caliberopportuni-ties atIndianaUniversityto prospec-

tive students in a way that has notbeen done before. Look for thisbrochure in your college fair boxes ofmaterials starting this fall!

• Contact Cards — continu-ing the trend. Starting last fall, instead of having students who areinterested in IU fill out a contactcard at our booth, we provided themwith a take-home brochure thatinstructed them how to register on-line with IU as a prospective stu-dent. The benefits are endless. Inaddition to them being able toregister in a format they prefer, theresponse time from campus isimmediate, and we can gather moreinformation about them, allowing usto send them specific communica-tions on areas in which they areinterested. And we can still monitorhow many students we are seeing atfairs based on your evaluations. We

will continue to send a small groupof contact cards for events forstudents who do not have access tothe Web. This change was anoverwhelming success! Our feedbackfrom you, as well as from prospectivestudents, indicated that studentsmuch preferred sharing their infor-mation online. This process willcontinue this fall and in the future.

• Register as a ProspectiveStudent — Once a student registersonline as a prospective student, theywill automatically be in our mailinglist, but also on our e-mail listserv sothat we can electronically communi-cate with them on a regular basisthroughout the enrollment process.Again, in the method that they prefer.

• Online Applications —We will continue to encouragestudents to apply online rather thanwith a paper application, and ask youto do the same at college fairs. Whenstudents apply online we receivetheir application almost immedi-ately, they tend to hear a decisionback from us more quickly, andthere is much less opportunity fordata entry error, because they aretyping their own information rightinto our database! (When studentsapply online, they still need to havetheir official high school transcriptand SAT or ACT scores sent to us).

We will see this trend con-tinue and the percentage to rise each

year. Once students have applied, they are also able to check the status oftheir application online and don’tneed to wait until they receive theirletter in the mail.

TRAININGIt is critical as alumni recruit-

ers to stay current on IU admissionsinformation, campus information, and changes in policy and proce-dures. There are many opportunitiesfor you to update yourself and bebest prepared to represent IndianaUniversity:

• Attend 2003–04 Previews— Attending an IU Preview presen-tation is one of the best things youcan do to be trained on the mostrecent IU information. By sitting inon the presentation you will learnabout the admission standards, current events, and the applicationprocess from a director in the office. In addition, you will hear the mostfrequently asked questions bystudents and parents. Please see thelisting of 2003 fall previews on Page6.

• Regional Training Ses-sions — Each year there will be avariety of regional training sessionsthat are offered for recruiters. Thisspring, Sarah Thompson offered atraining session for the New YorkMetro Alumni Club in May. Inaddition, there are a handful ofregional training opportunities thisfall: Cincinnati, Cleveland, Hous-ton, Boston, Los Angeles, SanDiego, and San Francisco as wellas special Neal-Marshall alumnirecruiter training opportunities inconjunction with special eventsthroughout the state. Fall 2003 Indiana University Previews — Save the Dates! Our annual fall tradition of traveling to spots all over the country and doing hour-long preview presentations

continues. IU Previews are one of the most popular and effective recruitment activities of the year, as students andparents enjoy hearing from an admissions professional, current students, and local alumni, while viewing scenes ofcampus. Alumni are an important part of these events and serve as greeters, answer questions, mingle with thestudents and their families, and welcome the group on behalf of their alumni club. Please join us!

AND … Previews are new for this year! Even if you have attended a preview in the past, be sure to attendon in your area this year. The format and content of both the preview and the “IU Pre-show” have been changed andthere are many new updates for this year.

With students from all six populated continents, and from countries as close as Canada or as remote asTajikistan, IU brings the world to Bloomington. With thesupport of the university, IU now has had more than3,000 international students on campus for the pastthree years. This growth has been led by Chris Foley andDoug Barley of the Office of International Admissions.

Chris is the senior associate director and hasdegrees in Russian studies, history, and English. Hecame to IU from Arkansas in 1994, and stayed on withadmissions after completing his master’s at IU.

Doug is a senior assistant director at IU. He’s atenor hailing from Maine and is completing his doctor-ate of music while working in International Admissions. He received two bachelor’s degrees from OberlinCollege and Conservatory and a master’s degree fromthe North Carolina School of the Arts. He came toBloomington in 1996 and manages the undergraduateapplication processes.

The Office of International Admissions is locatedin the Office of Admissions and reports to the directorof admissions. Unlike the Office of Admissions, whichsolely reviews undergraduate applications from U.S.citizens and permanent residents, the Office of Interna-tional Admissions reviews the applications of interna-tional graduate students in addition to those frominternational undergraduate students. We also issue thevisa documents that these students use to enter the U.S.

The appeal of IU to international students is

strong, and we know that one of our strongest recruit-ment advantages is you — our alumni! Alumni havevolunteered to attend college fairs in countries aroundthe world. You have contacted newly admitted studentsas well as invited them to your homes and alumni eventsin your country. We know that these efforts have been acritical part of our recruitment plan, and we thank youin helping us bring these students to IU.

Working with international students can be achallenge — especially in times like these. The war onterrorism, the spread of SARS, visa interviews, theimplementation of SEVIS (a federal database adminis-tered by the Department of Homeland Security to trackinternational students), and failing international econo-mies make it difficult for us to connect with interna-tional students and for them to connect with us. How-ever, despite the challenges in international recruitment,Indiana University hosted more than 3,300 interna-tional students in fall 2002 — the largest internationalstudent population in its history. These students madeup 8.5 percent of the student body, and more than 130countries were represented. Compared to other universi-ties and colleges, IU has one of the largest internationalstudent populations in the U.S.

As you can imagine, International Admissions isexciting and busy. With each year, we see more andmore gifted students hoping to study at IU, and theycome from all over the world to study everything fromoboe in the School of Music, to Native Americanlanguages in the College, to computer informationsystems in the Kelley School of Business. For the pastthree years, we have welcomed nearly one thousand newinternational students to campus each fall, and we spendthe entire previous year recruiting applicants, reviewingtheir credentials, and then issuing visa documentationfor those admitted. August is extremely exciting for usbecause we get to see all the students with whom wehave been working over the past year.

Today, we are getting a lot of questions aboutwhether we’ll see a big drop in the number of interna-tional students attending this campus. Perhaps, butinterest in attending IU is still strong. The number ofapplications are at record levels (more than 6,000 applica-tions), and the candidates are strong. However, there are

many obstacles between the admitted internationalstudent and IU. A student must demonstrate the abilityto pay for study at IU (international students are noteligible for most forms of financial aid), obtain a visafrom a U.S. consulate or embassy, travel to the U.S., andpass through immigration before attending IU. This ismuch easier said than done, and there are indicationsthat many international students are electing to attendschools in other countries (for example, the U.K.,Canada, and Australia) rather than face the challenges of

coming to the U.S.This isn’t the first obstacle IU has had to face in

recruiting international students. In the late ’90s, therewas the Asian economic crisis followed by the tragedy ofSeptember 11. Both events cast doubt on the size of theincoming international class. But we weathered each ofthese crises to bring in bigger and better internationalclasses. So far, the impact of this year has not beensevere, and we are doing everything possible to helpthese great students join you as alumni of IU.

MAUREEN:My name is Maureen Dunigan and I attended

Indiana University Bloomington from 1996 to 2000. Igraduated with a B.S. from the Kelly School of Businessand majored in accounting and finance. While at IU, I wasvery involved and active on campus. I was a member of theAlpha Gamma Delta sorority. As a member I participatedin IU Sing for three years and was a song leader my senioryear. I also joined the Student Alumni Association where Iserved as a director of special events for a year and vicepresident of internal relations for a year. Being part of theStudent Alumni Association board gave me many greatexperiences. I hosted many football game-watching partiesin the president’s box of Memorial Stadium. I also was ableto meet Herman B Wells, which was an honor. After Igraduated I moved back to Chicago, where I am originallyfrom. I have been working as accountant for the past threeyears. I have worked for a few different companies but havealways stayed with accounting. I am presently working for acompany called Legacy Professionals LLP. Since I movedbacked to Chicago I have also been a volunteer studentrecruiter for IU. Being a student recruiter is so much funbecause I get to share my knowledge and experiences of IUwith prospective students. The one thing I tell everyprospective student is to take a campus visit. I know thatthe decision maker for me was seeing the campus andexperiencing the friendly Bloomington atmosphere. I lookforward to my new position with the IU Alumni Club ofChicago, and to continue to meet and recruit students toIU from Chicago. I also look forward to working withother alumni who are just as enthusiastic to help withrecruiting or with other alumni events. Go IU!

RENNE:I attended IU from 1995 to 1999, graduating with

a B.A. in finance and international studies with a strongminor in Russian language. I am from Golf, Ill., a smallnorthern suburb of Chicago. While at IU, I was involved inseveral organizations: I was a member of the judicial boardof my dormitory (McNutt), I was a four-year member ofthe IU Marching Hundred, IU Pep Band, member of themen’s crew team, treasurer of Alpha Kappa Psi ProfessionalBusiness Fraternity, IUSA, IUSF, and a volunteer usher atthe IU Auditorium. I was never at a loss for activities, but

the people I met were worth it. Between my junior andsenior year, I participated in the School of Business overseasstudy trip to Mikkeli, Finland, for 10 weeks. As part of thattrip, I got to spend a week in Russia and travel throughoutScandinavia, meeting new people at every stop. Aftergraduating in 1999, I moved back to Chicago havingaccepted a position as a portfolio analyst with The North-ern Trust Company. After a little more than a year atNorthern Trust, I switched jobs and worked as a riskconsultant for Arthur Andersen. I was with Andersen untilthe very end, when another company bought my group, and presently I work for Protiviti, a company specializingin internal audit and risk consulting. As part of work, I helpout with college recruiting and travel to Bloomington asmuch as I can to participate in recruiting, discussion, andmentoring-type activities. I live in Lincoln Park, a placeteeming with hundreds of IU graduates. As soon as Ireturned to Chicago in 1999, I joined the Alumni StudentRecruiters and started attending the college fairs in the areato help inspire and inform people about how much IU hasto offer and what an excellent experience IU can be. I wasrecently appointed to co-vice president of student recruit-ing for Chicago with Maureen Dunigan. I look forward togetting more involved with IU in the future. Attendingcollege at IU was truly an amazing experience. The qualityof the people you meet and the programs IU offers isoutstanding. Many of my closest friends today are thepeople I met my first day in the dorm. I had such aninvaluable experience at IU that my younger brotherfollowed in my footsteps and will be a sophomore this year.IU may seem like a big university, but the environmentand the atmosphere that is there makes it feel like a secondhome.

centrality of outstanding teachingand cutting-edge research to themission of a premier university suchas this. I understand the importanceof securing the essential funding thatsuch teaching and research excellencedemands. I acknowledge the criticalneed for active alumni who careabout their alma mater and workwith university officials in pursuit ofour institutional aspirations. I knowhow important a highly skilled staffthat supports our faculty andstudents is to advancing the missionof the university.

I affirm the reality that ourmost important mission is theeducation of students and thatlearning occurs not only in theclassroom, but also through studentinvolvement in all aspects of univer-sity life including research, interna-tional experiences, and intercolle-

giate athletics. And I value deeply theimportant and unique role thatuniversities play in our society as keypathways to professional success andto personal achievement.

Effective higher educationleadership demands respect of thesefundamental aspects of our enterprisethat make universities such importantinstruments of societal advancement.

It also demands an under-standing of and commitment tofulfilling our obligations to thecitizens of this state. We must beresponsive to the higher educationalneeds of the citizens of Indiana.

We must engage in researchthat not only advances the frontiersof knowledge, but also better informspublic policy, fosters economicgrowth and enhances communitydevelopment.

We must participate in

community service activities thatstrengthen both early childhood andK-12 instruction.

We also must be as efficientand effective as possible in the use ofthe public resources that are en-trusted to us.

I look forward to listening toand learning from each of you over theweeks ahead. I look forward to sharingmy observations and specific thoughtsabout the significant opportunities thatawait us as an institution and also as astate. I also look forward to leading ourcollective efforts to lift this universityeven higher among the ranks ofAmerica’s most outstanding researchuniversities.
