Welcome to the 40th Anniversary Year!

University of BuckinghamAlumni Newsletter 3

WelcomeDear all,

May I wish you all a very happy New Year (the Year of the Monkey!). I do hope that 2016 will be a wonderful year for you and your families and very much look forward to hearing from you with any news that you may wish to share with the alumni group.

As you will see throughout this newsletter the theme is the 40th anniversary and the events that we will be holding. Please do register your interest in advance if you would like to attend. There will also be events taking place overseas, with organisation for these being taken on by alumni in the various countries with support from the Alumni Office.

Sir Anthony will be travelling a lot this year and on each of his trips would very much like to have an event, however big or small, with our alumni. It is his aim to meet with as many of you as possible and to share his vision for Buckingham in the coming years. A timetable of trips arranged to date will be sent out in the February update with individual emails to countries he will visit giving more details.

During this year we will do our best to stay in touch with you and keep you updated on all the news from Buckingham. Any news that you would like to send us will be very gratefully received and please don’t hesitate to contact any one of us if there is anything we can do for you.

With very best wishes,Anne

10 Happy New Year and Contact Details

3 30th - 40th Anniversary

This year we celebrate the University’s 40th Anniversary, and we have a number of exciting events planned for 2016 to commemorate this anniversary. Many of the events will be taking place worldwide, and members of staff travelling will be to various locations to host events. There will also be two big events planned in the

UK.

One of the UK events will take place on 16th - 17th July in Buckingham on our campus, and the other, our largest anniversary celebration, will be on 4th November at The Dorchester Hotel in London. Further details

of all our anniversary events will be given at a later date.

We would love for as many of you as possible to join us and celebrate this landmark year. It is looking to be an exciting time for alumni, students and staff alike, so please keep an eye out for future updates.

To register your interest in our events, please e-mail Helen at [email protected]

The University of Buckingham is launching a new postgraduate course with KPMG Enterprise, which is the first of its kind to offer students entrepreneurial projects with start-up businesses.Working closely with advisors from KPMG Enterprise, the course will enable students to develop an entrepreneurial mindset and consultancy skills that they will put into practice, working in businesses

as well as in the classroom.Students will not be examined, but will be mainly assessed on the reports and presentations they

make to client companies after completing the projects with them. The MSc in Entrepreneurial Consultancy and Practice, which begins in January 2016, follows the

Government’s admission that entrepreneurial skills urgently need to be developed to improve the UK’s economic performance.

Buckingham Landmarks Since the 30th Anniversary

2006

2016

2015

After much adaptation and renovation of The Chandos Road Building,

The University of Buckingham Medical

School opened in 2015 and welcomed it’s first

intake of students.

The University celebrates it’s

40th Anniversary. In 1976 Buckingham opened

it’s doors to students from both home and overseas.

40 years later, the UK’s first independent University

continues to flourish, with far larger student numbers and fantastic statistics, such as

being named The Times and Sunday Times University of the

Year for Teaching Quality.

In 2006 the University

celebrated it’s 30th Anniversary, with a number of events to commemorate

the landmark year. Buckingham has changed

a lot in 30 years, and the University has

continued to expand and gain a great reputation

worldwide.

20142008

The Humanities Research Institute was founded in

2008. The institute brings together internationally distinguished scholars

working in the field of the humanities, to support their

research and to engage them in the life of the

University. The institute also runs a number of courses in

London.

2012

The Dickens Journals online project was started in 2006, and was completed in time

for the Charles Dickens bicentenary in February

2012. The project created complete online editions of

Dickens’s weekly magazines, Household Words and All

the Year Round, which had previously been very difficult

for the public to access. A huge achievement for our

English Department.

In 2002 when the School of Education first opened,

there were just 12 students enrolled. In 2014 over 400

trainee teachers were participating in our PGCE

courses.

2012 The extensive

renovations to one of our campus buildings, Prebend House, were finished in 2012. The

building is now barely recognisable from the run down shell it once

was!
