Graduating from University High School in 1989, Grant Anderson was a proud, ambi- tious alum determined to make his dreams of working in Hollywood come true. “Even at U-High, I always had the itch to move to Hollywood. I remember being called into the counselor’s office at U-High and being told I had been accepted into University of California in Santa Barbara,” Anderson said. “Sitting in 10 feet of snow in the winter, the counselor pulled out the acceptance letter, and on the cover was a picture of campus beach, and I said ‘I am definitely going there.’” And he did, receiving a bachelor’s degree in computer engineering and film. “I always had two interests: entertainment and computers. So I took my computer engineering classes for my major and all of the other classes I could possibly take were in film,” Anderson said. “At the time people thought that was a really odd combination, but now it seems perfectly reasonable.” Anderson began his professional career as a senior software engineer with Apple Computer, supporting the company’s key multimedia technologies. His next profes- sional step started Anderson’s Hollywood career. He became technical director at Digital Domain, where he worked on Jim Cameron’s Academy Award-winning visual effects team for Titanic. “I call Titanic my boot camp because it was still, to this day, the hardest movie I have ever worked on,” Anderson said. “It was my first big film, and it was an enor- mous success.” Following his Digital Domain days, Anderson served as a technical director at Walt Disney Animation Studios. There he worked as a lighter and compositor on Walt Disney’s Dinosaur. From there Anderson was a producer with Spider-Man creator, Stan Lee, at Stan Lee Media. He initiated creation of the company’s 3D studio to deliver advanced 3D interactive entertainment. Anderson used his talent and knowledge to develop new forms of media, bringing together the Internet, film, and television. Gaining from that experience, Anderson was ready for a senior CG supervisor posi- tion for Sony Pictures Imageworks. There he served as the stereoscopic 3D supervisor on Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs and Beowulf. He was CG supervisor on Spider- Man 3 and the Academy Award-winning Spider-Man 2 as well. His other credits include lighter and compositor on several big box office films: the Academy Award- winning short The Chubb Chubbs, Lord of the Rings: The Two Towers, Early Bloomer, Charlie’s Angels: Full Throttle, The Haunted Mansion, Aviator, The Matrix Reloaded, and Spider-Man. “Working with Stan Lee on the Spider- Man films was a great moment for me. I remember being a kid, growing up in Heyworth at the time, and listening to Stan Lee narrate the Spider-Man comic. So working with him was huge for me,” Anderson said. His resume also includes serving as exec- utive director and stereoscopic supervisor for Sony Pictures 3D Technology Center. He was the expert of 3D stereography, teaching the theory and application of shooting high quality 3D to motion pic- ture industry professionals. Most recently he served as stereoscopic supervisor on Columbia Pictures’ The Green Hornet and Sony Screen Gem’s Planet B-Boy: Battle of the Year. Anderson is now president and chief creative officer of Creative Monster Productions, which he cofounded in 2007 and has since nurtured into an award- winning commercial, film, television, and multimedia production company. “Previously we were a commercial pro- duction company, but our goal was always to move into film,” Anderson said. “The whole idea of Creative Monster, and the reason I wanted to start it with my business partner, was because we really wanted to maximize creativity. But we also wanted to own the content.” Anderson has several films in develop- ment, including one based on telling the Shirley Chisholm story, as well as North Pole. He actually traveled to the North Pole to serve as visual effects supervisor in order to capture 360-degree panorama shots for the film. Such adventures have made the journey from U-High to Hollywood rewarding for Anderson, who has solid advice for recent graduates looking to chase their dreams. “Just do it. Don’t listen to anybody else. If you really have a dream and something you love, go do it,” he said, “Really find a way to combine your interests, and do something that you really love to do.” Alumni Newsletter For alumni and friends of University High School, College of Education, Illinois State University Vol. 19 No. 2 Fall 2014 University High alum thrives in Hollywood career by Jennifer Beemer

Graduating from University High School in 1989, Grant Anderson was a proud, ambi-tious alum determined to make his dreams of working in Hollywood come true.

“Even at U-High, I always had the itch to move to Hollywood. I remember being called into the counselor’s office at U-High and being told I had been accepted into University of California in Santa Barbara,” Anderson said. “Sitting in 10 feet of snow in the winter, the counselor pulled out the acceptance letter, and on the cover was a picture of campus beach, and I said ‘I am definitely going there.’”

And he did, receiving a bachelor’s degree in computer engineering and film.

“I always had two interests: entertainment and computers. So I took my computer engineering classes for my major and all of the other classes I could possibly take were in film,” Anderson said. “At the time people thought that was a really odd combination, but now it seems perfectly reasonable.”

Anderson began his professional career as a senior software engineer with Apple Computer, supporting the company’s key multimedia technologies. His next profes-sional step started Anderson’s Hollywood career. He became technical director at Digital Domain, where he worked on Jim

Cameron’s Academy Award-winning visual effects team for Titanic.

“I call Titanic my boot camp because it was still, to this day, the hardest movie I have ever worked on,” Anderson said. “It was my first big film, and it was an enor-mous success.”

Following his Digital Domain days, Anderson served as a technical director at Walt Disney Animation Studios.

Most recently he served as stereoscopic supervisor on Columbia Pictures’ The Green Hornet and Sony Screen Gem’s Planet B-Boy: Battle of the Year.

Anderson is now president and chief creative officer of Creative Monster Productions, which he cofounded in 2007 and has since nurtured into an award-winning commercial, film, television, and multimedia production company.

“Previously we were a commercial pro-duction company, but our goal was always to move into film,” Anderson said. “The whole idea of Creative Monster, and the reason I wanted to start it with my business partner, was because we really wanted to maximize creativity. UHSAA president’s letterSo what does the UHSAA actually do? Our biggest signature event is hosting the alum-ni social prior to the Homecoming football game. Our other signature event also occurs during Pioneer Homecoming when we recognize outstanding alumni for their achieve-ments in their fields and significant contributions in their communities and invite them to mentor our students in an all-school assembly.

A lot of planning and behind-the-scenes work goes on year-round to facilitate the tailgate and the awards assembly. It’s said that imitation is the sincerest form of flattery and our pioneering work in high school alumni activities is being duplicated throughout the Twin Cities and beyond.

Our alumni relations chairs will help you organize your class reunions. The alumni database allows classmates to connect and reunite. Remember: each alum is responsible for updating their contact information.

Our communication tools include the alumni newsletter, The Pioneer, which is pub-lished twice a year. And in this day and age of the Internet and smartphones, we main-tain an informative U-High website and have a group Facebook page: We Are One: U-High Pioneers, to disseminate information in a timely manner.

Our purpose and mission is to aid in the development of U-High as an institution of excellence through contributions of knowledge, skills, and material wealth. The UHSAA board has a vision of many future endeavors including development of an alumni career resource bank to be used by UHS faculty and students.

Thanks for your support of U-High! And consider this a personal invitation to serve with us on the UHSAA board and its committees.

Dave Martin ’83 UHSAA president

Superintendent’s welcomeNothing is more exciting than a University High School Homecoming! The event has the distinction of bringing past, present, and future Pioneers together. Participants support the team, honor the school, and revisit fond memories of their days as Pioneers. A typical Homecoming tailgate attracts more than 500 friends and family, and the evening is capped off with a football game.

We encourage all alumni to join us. U-High alumni are the most loyal and hardworking alumni around and, as a result, put on a great event to celebrate our school and its traditions. I am always humbled by the fond memories that alumni share with me as they describe how U-High has contributed to the richness of their lives and laid a foundation for their success.

Please join me on Friday, Sept. 26, as we celebrate being part of the U-High community!

Jeff Hill, Ed.D. Laboratory Schools superintendent

Yearbooks neededWe are still searching for a replacement for 1970. We are scanning yearbooks to make them available online.

Please help us preserve a part of our history. Yearbooks have been graciously retrieved from garage sales, donation piles, and even garbage cans and dumpsters. So if you come across an extra Clarion, please pass it on to the UHS Alumni Association. There are many anxious alumni wanting to have a yearbook from their era. There are a limited number of Clarion yearbooks avail-able for purchase for $10 each.

To donate or purchase yearbooks, please contact the UHS Alumni Association at [email protected] or Barbara Lichty Blunk ’53, alumni relations coor-dinator, at (309) 452-2414 or [email protected]. Donations can also be left at the school library.

U-High named one of America’s most challenging high schoolsUniversity High School ranked higher on The Washington Post’s 2014 list of America’s most challenging high schools, rising to No. 1,502 nationally. That’s up from last year’s ranking of 1,671.

U-High was the only downstate school in Illinois to make the list. Among Illinois high schools, U-High was ranked No. 55. The rankings are based on a number of criteria, including the number of college-level tests given the previous year divided by the number of graduates. They also consider the percent-age of low-income families and the percentage of graduates who passed at least one college-level test during their high school career.

Only nine percent of the approximately 22,000 U.S. public high schools earned placement on the list.

Legacy familyMargaret Theis Bratcher ’67 met her future husband, Jerry Bratcher ’66, at U-High when they were students, but he didn’t ask her out on a date until the summer after he graduated. They mar-ried and had two daughters they sent to U-High to continue the family tradition. Christie Bratcher Hines ’94 and Julie Bratcher Davis ’96 became the third generation of Pioneers. Jerry’s mother, Alberta May Rees Bratcher ’45 was the first of the family to attend UHS.

Alumni Award nominations neededThe Alumni Awards committee needs your help to nominate fellow classmates to be considered for the alumni awards. Please forward names to the [email protected] or contact the awards committee chair. While a brief description of why the alum is being nominated would be appreciated, it is not necessary to make the nomination.

All nominees for Distinguished Alumni and Pioneer Hall of Fame will be contacted to accept the nomination and will submit a detailed autobiography to aid the awards committee in the selection process. All completed nomination forms will be retained and re-evaluated each year. Selection is completed in the spring and the awards presentation is held in the fall at Homecoming. Nominees are encouraged to update their information periodically.

Candidates for Distinguished Alumni must be U-High graduates while candidates for Pioneer Hall of Fame and Alumni Service must have attended U-High. Friends of U-High may include individuals, groups, or businesses that have provided exceptional service or gifts to UHS.

A listing of past recipients can be found at the U-High website at UHigh.IllinoisState.edu/Blogs/Alumni.
