Alumni News - 2

Alumni Association President’s MessageSince January, the newly elected Oldenburg Academy Alumni Association officers and trustees have held four planning meetings on Saturdays from 8 am to 12 noon, setting a Strategic Plan.

The first goal of our plan was to establish a scholarship committee to define and complete the criteria for the Oldenburg Academy Alumni Association Scholarship, with a goal for completion of March 2012. I am happy to announce that the first OA Alumni Association Scholarship, in the amount of $1,000, was presented during the Awards Ceremony on May 17, 2012 to Hallie Kile. Congratulations to Hallie, for being the first recipient of this scholarship in the Alumni Association’s 110 year history. To the Scholarship and Selection Committees, I thank you for your time and dedication to this endeavor.

Following the Awards Ceremony, it was a privilege to induct the Class of 2012 into the Alumni Association at the Senior Luncheon. They are the 110th class to be inducted into the elite group known as OA Alumni. Congratulations to all of you.

This year, the Alumni Association celebrates its 110th Anniversary and, in recognition of this occasion, the alumni association will celebrate in a special way at Homecoming 2012. I hope all alumni will make a special effort to attend Homecoming as well as other events planned by the alumni association. The Alumni Association is more than just the October Homecoming event... here are just a few of the upcoming events we hope you will join us for.

The Alumni Association will sponsor a concert on Saturday, September 29 at 7:30 pm, featuring Antsy McClain and the Trailer Park Troubadours in the OA Auditorium. Our hope is to bring more award-winning performers from a wide range of genres and musical styles to OA at affordable prices to help fund the scholarship endowment in perpetuity.

On Friday, October 12, the Alumni Association will host the 2012 Distinguished Alumni Award Dinner. This event was started in 2009 as a way for the community, family, friends, and alumni to nominate an alumnus whom they feel is deserving of this honor. This event is open to the entire community and we hope you will take time to join us and see firsthand the wonderful ways OA Alumni make a difference.

On Saturday, October 13, 2012 we will host the annual Alumni Homecoming, celebrating our 110th year as an Alumni Association.

These are just a few of the events sponsored by your Alumni Association. By joining in these events, you help to support Oldenburg Academy and its tradition of educating well-rounded women and men.

Dan SlavenMeet OA’s New Advancement Director

My name is Dan Slaven, and I am pleased to join Oldenburg Academy as the Advancement Director. For the last three years, I have been an Executive Director for the Rush Memorial Hospital Foundation. Among other responsibilities, my duties included capital campaigns,

event planning, grant writing, annual appeal, and meeting with patients and donors. Before joining the Rush Memorial Hospital Foundation, I worked as a Community Development Director for the American Cancer Society. With the American Cancer Society, I served in five counties as the lead staff member to the committees that planned and organized “Relay For Life” events. Prior to that position, I was a supervisor for Decatur County Healthy Families. Healthy Families offered a variety of programs and services for new and expectant parents.

My passion for helping others meet their goals and making a difference in individual lives and communities led me to my prior positions and makes me excited to become a part of Oldenburg Academy with its mission in students’ lives and the supporting communities. OA’s Advancement Team has done an amazing job of raising funds for the Academy. With over seven years of fundraising experience, I hope to bring creativity, motivation, and leadership that will challenge our team to move the Academy forward into newer dimensions. I also look forward to meeting members of the OA community and expanding the advancement efforts in order to ensure the future growth and expansion of the Academy. On a personal note, my wife, Sheri, and I are natives of Greensburg, Indiana. We have two active and enjoyable four year old children, Averi and George. When Sheri and I are not chasing after the kids, we serve as youth leaders at our church as well as spend time investing in our marriage and our relationships with God. It is an honor to be a part of this team, and I look forward to the opportunity to do my part to further OA’s mission and “commitment to academic excellence, social responsibility, leadership and personal growth for our students who will excel in our ever-changing world.” Thank you for your prayers and support as we begin this endeavor together.

Hallie Kile ‘15Oldenburg Academy Alumni Association Scholarship Recipient

The Oldenburg Academy Alumni Association is pleased to announce the winner of the Oldenburg Academy Alumni Association Scholarship, Hallie Kile, Class of 2015. This is the first year the association offered this scholarship for underclassman, and over 16 applications were received! The selection committee had a difficult time making a selection, due to the applicants’ outstanding qualifications.

Each scholarship applicant was required to write an essay telling the Alumni Association what they value most about their OA experience and education and how the scholarship will help them continue their education at Oldenburg Academy.

“It gives me hope for the future knowing that these students will be leading the way in our ever changing world.”

Member of the selection committee

“Faith plays a very large role in Hallie’s life. This is evident in her attitudes and words. Hallie believes that being present at Oldenburg Academy is a gift that allows her to continue to foster her spiritual life. What an amazing gift to OA faculty and staff.”

Mrs. Alicia Auseré Religion Faculty/Department Chair

Hallie would like to become a medical doctor and wishes to work with the organization Doctors without Borders. Her hope is to serve others, not just through the medical field, but also spiritually. Hallie is from St. Michael’s parish in Brookville, Indiana. Congratulations, Hallie and keep up the good work!

Mrs. Bettina Rose, Oldenburg Academy Principal, presented the 2011-2012 Outstanding Volunteer Service Award to Richard Riehle during Catholic Schools Week Mass on January 30. Richard is married to Marcia Wissel Riehle ‘76. They have two children, Michael and Maria ‘11. Even though they no longer have a student attending OA, Richard still volunteers at the school in a variety of ways.

Richard volunteers for bulk mailings in the Advancement Office. He arrives early, stays late, and spreads joy to everyone with his stories of the farm, family, and ice fishing. He also volunteers in the cafeteria once a month and, when a volunteer can’t make it, he is the first person called. He has even acted as interim cafeteria manager! Richard has volunteered for OA’s Reverse Raffle for many years, even before his daughter was an OA student. After the event each year, he and his wife wash dishes at the OA cafeteria well into the early morning hours. Richard also mans the grill at the OA Golf Classic each year. Over the past four years Richard has shown a great deal of dedication to the OA cross country and track programs as an assistant coach.

Richard is a true example of what it means to give back to others. The entire OA community thanks him for his dedication and service. The Outstanding Volunteer Service Award was initiated in 2001 to recognize the outstanding volunteer efforts of individuals in service of Oldenburg Academy. Dedicated and committed volunteers are key to the success of the Academy’s future. Volunteers receiving this award are recognized for their leadership, faithfulness and contributions of time, talent and treasure.

Holly’s rOAd to EducationOn Saturday, April 21, many courageous souls once again braved the elements outside to participate in the holly’s rOAd to education 5K Walk/Run. Despite the breezy, chilly day, the event, held in honor of Holly Bruns ’74 to help fund the Holly Bruns Memorial Scholarship at Oldenburg Academy, was a SMASHING success! The gross revenue for this year’s event was over $6,500! Outstanding!

We would not have achieved this success without the generosity of our event sponsors, all of the companies and individuals who donated cash, products, and prizes, and the support of our volunteers. We can’t thank Sarah Lamping enough for the many hours she volunteered, after hours, to support our efforts. Special thanks to Susan Glaser ’80 for recruiting/organizing the volunteers! Thanks to the OA students who rallied the day of the event to assist us.

This event is a great opportunity to renew ICA/OA friendships while supporting a worthy cause. Links to our Facebook photo page and YouTube slideshow are in the Alumni section of the OA website. Hope to see many of you at next year’s event!

2012-2013 Alumni Anniversary Class Project UpdateA mailing was sent to all the Alumni Anniversary Classes celebrating at Homecoming this year to help us fund the repair and replace the walkway behind the academic building. So far we have had a great response but we still need more classmates to participate!

Class of 1967 is in the lead, followed closely by the Class of 1972 and 1977. Remember, your gift to this project, no matter the size, will be combined with the gifts of your classmates and fellow alumni to transform these walkways.

We invite you to come to campus on Saturday, October 13, 2012 for Alumni Homecoming to see the impact that your gift has made. A plaque recognizing participating anniversary classes will demonstrate your class’s ongoing commitment to your Alma Mater.

Make checks payable to the OA Alumni Association and write “sidewalk project” in the memo section of your check. Send your gift to Sarah Lamping, P. O. Box 200, Oldenburg, IN 47036.

Erin Fledderman ‘98 is the daughter of Mark and Joann Reer Fledderman ‘61 and a middle and high school teacher at Thomas Jefferson Independent Day School in Joplin, MO, an area that was ravished by an EF5 tornado last spring.

May 22, 2011 is a day that will be engraved in my mind forever. At 5:41 pm, an EF5 tornado ripped through my community and took out a path a mile wide and almost 14 miles long. An hour before, I was sitting outside with friends at a yogurt shop talking about the end of the school year and how nice the weather was. As we were leaving the clouds were rolling in and little did we know that in less than an hour that area of town, including the yogurt shop, would not exist.

Even though I was not directly hit by the tornado, my life changed. Friends, students, and thousands of others lost their homes and/or businesses. I remember walking outside after the tornado wondering what happened. I had no power or water. Insulation and tree branches were all over my parking lot, but I could not see any major damage. I immediately called my parents to tell them I was okay. I knew that tornadoes had ripped through Joplin but had no idea of the magnitude.

Information started trickling in as residents of my apartment complex started congregating outside and were talking about what they had heard. Joplin High School was gone. St. John’s Hospital was gone. St. Mary’s Catholic Church and School lost everything but the giant cross. Home Depot and Walmart were both gone. Realizing that Walmart was only eight blocks from my apartment and St. John’s was on the other side of town made me realize the seriousness of the situation. Everyone outside of Joplin had now been informed by the media and were seeing pictures of the devastation while the members of my community did not know the full extent of the destruction.

I spent the next few hours in a daze trying to find friends. The local radio stations were operating on generators and trying to help people find their loved ones. I listened to this for days hoping I did not know anyone missing.

I went to my school the next day to help call families to make sure they were okay. Luckily, no one in my school community lost family members, but many lost their houses and businesses. The rest of the week I spent

When A Twister Faces A Twister

hours at school keeping students occupied while their parents cleaned up wreckage and helped others do the same.

After meetings I volunteered with a fellow teacher feeding victims waiting to apply for FEMA assistance. There were so many people that we met and we were very humbled by the situation. People were embarrassed that they needed assistance and were hesitant to take the donated food we were passing out.

The donated food was from a group of guys we met from Texas who dropped everything when they heard of the devastation and drove to Joplin to help feed people. Every corner had food and water stands. Most of these people were not from Joplin and came from hundreds of miles away.

My school community was also coming together to help. The school and students donated thousands of dollars to the American Red Cross and school supplies for students and teachers whose buildings

when we go to bed at night we

were leveled. Students spent the summer selling baked goods to raise money for the tornado victims and others helped with cleaning debris and handing out water. One of my senior students founded an organization called A Tree Grows in Joplin to help replace trees throughout the devastated area. I can’t help but feel proud of my students and fellow teachers for all they have done this past year to help those in need.

Before the tornado hit, I had not been living in Joplin very long and didn’t know how I felt about the community. After May 22, I was proud to live here, not because a devastating event occurred that put us on the map, but because of how we became a better and stronger community.

One year later, Joplin is rebuilding. Millions of volunteers have poured into my community and given their time and money to help thousands of people try to get back to some sort of normal. That is exactly what we have done. Walmart and Home Depot are

As I was trying to decide how to begin my story, I decided to get personal and pull a quote out of one of my blog posts written in January of this year. ‘… it is so worth it! Hike way up a mountain and then glide down under a foot or more powder with the beautiful Cook Inlet expanding before your eyes... wow I can’t even express my feeling. I can’t image going through life never having experienced this... Some people get to grow up with this beauty around them and for me it has always been a picture in a book…’ Only up until December 29, when I uprooted and took residency in Anchorage, AK.

Alumni Take on Alaska!

back. St. John’s has begun building a new hospital on higher ground and has donated their land to the Joplin Schools. Houses are being rebuilt and schools are breaking ground. We wake up every morning like the rest of the world but when we go to bed at night we all know that our city has changed for the better.

To commemorate the one year anniversary of the tornado a memorial walk following the backwards path of the tornado and a service were held to remember the 161 neighbors we lost and to celebrate how far we have come. During the service a time capsule and memorial were dedicated at Cunningham Park which has been rebuilt after being wiped out by the tornado.

Joplin will never be the like it was but we will be better. President Obama has come to town twice since the tornado. The first time he inspired and gave us hope to rebuild and this last time he said we are the inspiration. I look at my community and I am inspired every day. We have not given up and we will not give up. We are one community and as one we will survive and be stronger and better than ever.

We had a spectacular snowboarding season, with a record-breaking ≈134” (132.6” in 1954-55 was the last record). At the ski resort, Alyeska, there was even more snow than anchorage’s average. Together, we made our way to the very top of the mountain and shared in some of the most beautiful sights we have ever seen. The powder was unbelievably soft and I felt like I was on a cloud, gliding through a dream.

It’s now warming up and time for lots of hikes and camping! We are on a softball team and a couple weeks ago we participated in the Walk For Autism. It’s so fun to be able to catch up with a friend 3,865 miles away from where we first met. I am so excited for the many more adventures that we will have!

Sarah Schulte ‘07

My story started in the summer of ’09, when a fellow Academy girl, and good friend, made the decision to take a teaching job in a very small village, in the ‘Bush’ of Alaska. Amanda Frey, as you already know from an earlier version of the Alumni Newsletter, took a teaching job in Kongiganak, where the only form of transportation is by small plane or snow machine (Known as Snow mobile amongst the ‘lower 48’). This decision caused a glint of excitement within me, because she was going on a very exciting adventure and I envied her gumption and free will. Never had I considered it to be an opportunity or an invitation. Until this past summer, when her contract in the village had expired and she decided to take a job back in civilization. That convinced me to Google ‘graphic design jobs in Anchorage AK’ and land me the job I have now. Amanda was the last factor in my equation. Job + friend + west = Moving out west. I got the job much quicker than I had ever believed possible, Anchorage is about as far west as I could’ve gone without leaving the U.S. and my friend factor was solved with Amanda Frey’s existence.

We have had so many great experiences together since my arrival. Amanda has taken me to Seward, a fishing city south of Anchorage, introduced me to fresh caribou and salmon, watched the start of the Iditarod, and shared in puppy experiences.
