Presidential Posting Nigel Leigh, President You all got the notification during July - Alpine County decided that our Challenge ride couldn't proceed this year after all. Not really a big surprise, given the recent dramatic increase in covid cases nationwide. Still, disappointing after the heroic work put in by Michael to keep it on track. But all is not lost. They made it clear that we could still hold a smaller Staff Ride on the same course on the same date, July 25. So we did. Surprisingly, due to the lower cost base, this size of ride worked out well financially for the club. And there were far fewer rest-stops and volunteers required. Perhaps we should steer the Challenge in this direction, to make it an ultra-small "boutique" ride? There is nothing like the risk of selling out to encourage people to sign up early! But more than anything, thanks to all the volunteers who came out to make the day a great success. And thanks to Michael and Jennie for the extreme hours and effort they put in to make this happen at all. And still more thanks, to the riders themselves, who were a pleasure to serve at our virus-safe pit-stops, every one patient and appreciative. Memberships An interesting little statistic from Tod - we now have 175 club members, and 70 of them are new this year. That's a pretty high ratio of newness. And it does fit in with the info that cycle shops have been selling bikes in record numbers this year. It also correlates with the fact that Joseph's weekly time trial road races are dominated in numbers by the C & D grades, not the A & B racers. So if you know people who are dabbling in cycling this year, do put in a friendly suggestion that they visit www.altaalpina.org/membership/ to invest $30 in their cycling future. Highway Cleanup Caltrans had put a stop on highway cleanups this year due to covid concerns. But they recently gave them the OK again, with safety measures, so Thomas Walker held the first one in mid July. The team of himself, Jennie Hamiter, Bill Magladry, and Lee Griffith restored pride in our section of highway near Turtle Rock Park. Thanks and well-done team! Weekly MTB ChallengeNigel Leigh, PresidentHere's a listing of who's been getting out. If some of your rides aren't shown on there, don't panic! Just shoot me a text to 775-267-7089 with either evidence or bribe, and I'll fix it. This last month has seen some truly awesome riding in the Weekly MTB Challenges. From as far north as Marlette-TRT-Flume, to as far south as Kirkwood Thunder Mtn. All with great views and enough climbing and technical challenge to keep you honest. For those of us who are squeezing these rides in after work, the long days have really helped. The promise of our now-regular tailgate-grill afterwards has helped too! Keep an eye on the rideboard postings and join in.

Weekly Road Racing – COVID-19 Social Distancing Race Series Joseph Whitely, Race CoordinatorWe have had great weather to choose from for your solo racing lately.  The winds have mostly calmed down this month compared to the spring.  We still have a few weeks of racing left, so if anybody is on the fence you can still join in on the fun.  We would love to have you.  As always, if you see any errors in my extraction of the weekly race leaderboards or points standings here please email me at [email protected].

1. Monthly Status Reports:• Treasurer:  The current checking account

balance is: $11,13.24. The PayPal account balance is $15,813.10.

• Membership:  Tod reported that he has received notifications that 54 people have signed up as new members (as opposed to renewing) members but there are problems receiving payments and receiving forms. We may have an issue with the post office.Michael will make sure that the post office isn’t keeping our mail outside the box.

• Weekend Rides: Bill posted a ride for July 4. Bill will reach out to other ride leaders and see who may be up for posting more weekend socially distanced rides. The board also discussed how and when to post rides.

• Weekly MTB Rides: Nigel has scheduled another weekly MTB challenge and scheduled Tuesday ride and plans to continue for the balance of the season.

• Social Media: Gregg has been keeping up on the Facebook accounts with regular news updates.

• Newsletter: The next newsletter will feature Staff Ride and Yosemite Ride Photos, Highway Cleanup Photos, and a Challenge Update. Michael requested submissions for the Presidential Posting, Race Results, Upcoming Rides, and Advocacy notices.

• Website:  Jim flagged merchant discount policy needs updating. Michael and Nigel should review the wording of the current policy for an update. Jim would like for every page and PDF on the website to have a date so it’s easier to maintain. Michael reported that email issues with Blue Host continue to plague communications for the Challenge.

• Insurance: We will finalize insurance for the

Challenge on July 8.• Clothing: Today is last day for NICA team

clothing orders for the first order window. Another 7-10 day order window will open in August for delivery in mid-September. Lori Kroboth reported that she has had a great deal of positive feedback on the NICA uniforms. There were four orders for items from club clothing inventory last week. Lori Piccini is still helping out until we have a volunteer to take over from her.

• Weekly Road Races:  Joseph reported that the race season is going well in the Strava format. Some races are more popular than others but that's always been the case. This format will continue through July and a decision on the last few weeks of the season will be made at the August board meeting.

• Junior Team: The NICA team has about 37 students signed up for the 2020 season with about 15 parents signed up to help. Training rides have begun with strict rules for virus safety. Groups for training rides have been kept to 10 or less to stay within rules around gatherings and groups are sent out in different directions to maintain physical distancing. The team has developed strict protocols for parking lot interactions: parents stay in their cars and students and coaches have masks. There are sign up sheets to facilitate contact tracing.

• Fall Century:  No Update.• Adopt A Highway: First of the year scheduled

for this Saturday. We're looking for a good turnout.

• Pinenut Cracker:  Jennie and Michael mapped the course so we can re-apply for the BLM permit.

• Bike Advocacy: Next week legislature is in session and they are looking to cut programs to balance the budget which could have a negative impact on plans for bike lanes and funding other transportation infrastructure.

• Mixed Terrain:  Work has been on the back

burner due to all the work on making the Challenge Covid safe.

• Challenge: Michael reported that the staff ride went well and the virus-safety protocols worked well. A big “Thank You” to all the volunteers who helped make the ride happen and provided feedback afterwards--we learned a great deal that has helped refined our implementation for July 25. Right now the focus is on the final push to recruit participants and volunteers. We’re also looking for some specific equipment we’re trying to borrow including FRS radios for social distancing, tripods for checkpoints, and cones. Permits are in place or in progress for July 25. The four remaining Alpine County permit applications will be submitted on July 10 after insurance is in place.

2. Challenge Policies:  We need to establish policies that discourage anyone with symptoms of Covid-19 from participating in the Alta Alpina Challenge on

July 25. To this end it was decided that those who are registered to participate on July 25 but who cannot participate that day will have their ride credited to 2021 or may opt for a 75% refund. [Nigel/Tod/Carried, Tammy Abstained]

3. Challenge to Proceed on July 25:  The board discussed the remaining risks and effort around following through with all of the plans for a virus-safe Alta Alpina Challenge on July 25. Every board member present affirmed the plan.

4. Air Ambulance Offer:  Nigel reported that he has been contacted by an air ambulance company interested in offering club members a discount on air ambulance insurance. There was a consensus that a club discount on a plan that covered both of the air ambulance services that serve our area would be preferred.

5. Next Meeting: Monday, August 3, 2020, 6 pm, by conference call.Meeting adjourned at 8:20 pm.

1. Monthly Status Reports:• Treasurer:  The current checking account

balance is $9,963.10. The Paypal balance is $15,583.49. Frank needs reimbursement for a Jethros payment and for paying for the StorAll. There are also a number of other pending reimbursements.

• Membership:  Current membership is 175. There are a number of pending new memberships with12 missing payments and 29 missing signed waivers. Each has been contacted twice in the last month but things seem to be going missing at the post office.

• Weekend Rides: Bill reported that he has asked ride leaders to post more rides. Bill will post weekly races to ride board as suggested Saturday morning socially distanced rides.

• Weekly MTB Rides: Nigel reported that Tuesday evening socially distanced mtb rides and the mtb ride challenge are well attended. This week’s ride is Armstrong Pass.

• Social Media: No report.• Newsletter:  July newsletter hasn't gone out

because of all the work for the July 25 ride date. It’s already ready to go. One option is to send it out now and put together an August newsletter in a few weeks. The other option is to tack the August minutes onto the July newsletter and send it out as a July/August newsletter. The board opted for the latter.

• Website:  Jim will contact Dave Scarborough regarding the Fall Century to post it on the home page.

• Insurance: Michael will work with Tod to see if a top-up is required for LAB insurance.

• Clothing: Drew is working on the date for a 2nd order window for the NICA uniform. Clothing ordered in the first window should arrive in mid-

August. Drew is looking for photos of the clothing to help promote sales for the second window. This can go in the next newsletter, on the home page, and in social media feeds.

• Weekly Road Races:  Joseph reported that he has been analyzing the last two decades of race participation to determine what can be done to attract more people. While this year’s racing has attracted a number of new members, there are lots of folks we haven’t seen for a while. Joseph will follow-up with people for anecdotal feedback.

• Junior Team:  Drew reported that the NICA team has recruited over 40 racers and over 20 coaches. The team is holding weekly socially distanced training sessions in small groups.

• Fall Century:  Still scheduled for October 4 over the same route as usual however the post-ride will need to change. Dave Scarborough should attend the next meeting to review details.

• Adopt A Highway: Thomas hosted a successful first highway cleanup and ride. The next highway cleanup is TBA.

• Pinenut Cracker:  No progress since the last board meeting.

• King of Kingsbury Time Trial:  The Time Trial is tentatively set for September 26. Joseph will check on the details with Alan.

• Challenge: Michael reported that the July 25 staff ride went very well. A big thank you to all the volunteers who made it possible. It will take a few weeks to wrap things up as gear needs to be cleaned and packed away, jersey orders must be shipped, results need to be posted, refunds need to be processed, and a final accounting for this year has to be done. Joseph volunteered to dispose of the surplus palettes taking up space in the storage unit.

• Mixed Terrain:  Work on the mixed terrain project will resume when work on the Challenge wraps up. The Numbers fire impacted the routes that pass through the pinenuts and this has impacted plans for the fall. We will be looking at

a virtual series of some kind for 2020.• Bike Advocacy: Carlo met with Colin Robertson,

the new Director of Outdoor Recreation for the State of Nevada, a newly created office based in Carson City. He expressed Interest in the NICA program.

2. FulGaz Videos:  Mark Schartz contacted Nigel with respect to a project to promote the Death Ride with video content for FulGaz. Mark has recorded video of other local rides associated with the club and wanted to confirm that there was no problem, associating these other rides with Alta Alpina Cycling Club. There were no objections raised by the board and Nigel will follow-up with Mark..

3. Board Meeting Times:  With the move to board meetings by conference call, Nigel inquired if there was any interest in changing the meeting time. The consensus was to leave the tim at 6:00pm.

4. Membership Process:  Tod distributed the text of a proposed new membership waiver with space for a single signature at the bottom to replace the two page form currently in use that has a membership form on one side and requires people to initial one page and sign the other. Tod reports that people often don’t initial or sign where they are supposed to and that pages can get lost. Tod also created a prototype of a new online membership form and all board members were asked to review it. Tod is proposing we add a mechanism to allow digital/electronic signatures to avoid a dependence on the US Postal Service. Michael will check with our insurance company for their guidance.

5. Next Meeting: Monday, August 31, 2020, 6 pm, by conference call.Meeting adjourned at 7:35 pm
