From Hitachi’s largest mining shovel – the 1.8 million-lb. EX8000-6 – to its smallest compact excavator in the Americas – the 3,800-lb. ZX17U-5 – all Hitachi excavators are built to deliver the efficiency, reliability and durability you need for every job.

In this issue of BREAKOUT, you’ll find out how Nan Inc.’s new ZX470LC-6 is making a big impact on the Big Island of Hawaii. Additionally, you’ll read about a new ZX350LC-6 tucked away in the mountains of Virginia that’s providing reliable performance and productivity for Boxley Materials’ Rich Patch Quarry.

When your technicians are highly trained, your equipment is likely to run more efficiently and productively. And that’s why the Hitachi Mining Division’s technical training department offers courses and training with each piece of mining equipment. Craig Steinhauser, division manager of customer support for Hitachi Construction & Mining Division – Americas, shares more on page 8.

Depending on your jobsite, wheeled excavators can be a more mobile and maneuverable option compared to tracked excavators. Find out more about the benefits of Hitachi’s new fuel-efficient Final Tier 4 (FT4)/EU Stage IV ZX190W-6 wheeled excavator on page 14.

Thanks for trusting Hitachi equipment on your jobs every day. We look forward to hearing from you!

ROCK-SOLID DURABILITY

The newest addition to the Rich Patch Quarry site is a ZX350LC-6, and it’s Boxley Materials’ primary workhorse, transforming massive limestone rocks into a crusher-friendly size.

“We’re pulling limestone out and producing anywhere from 25,000-35,000 tons a month through the crusher,” Robertson said. “We’re operating and crushing nine months a year so we keep a rock breaker on the Hitachi 350 for 90 percent of the time. The material we have here is very blocky and we wind up with a lot of big rock. There’s just no way to shoot it to get it down to crusher size so we use the Hitachi.”

The ZX350LC-6 keeps the quarry crushing eight hours a day.

“We’ve got a jaw crusher, two impact crushers and two screens making six products: crusher run, #57, #8, #9, lime and sand,” Robertson said. “The products that we make are being used in concrete, asphalt and road bases.”

While crushing is the norm, Boxley Materials also adjusts its operations as needed, for example, to help with the aftermath of Mother Nature’s wrath.

“In June 2016, we had a 500-year flood just to the west of us,” Robertson said. “The flood washed a railroad out and we worked 12- to 14-hour days shipping material to get that up and running. We sent a lot of Class III rock, which is 500 lbs. and bigger!”

ocated near the Appalachian Mountains and a national forest, Boxley Materials Company’s Rich Patch Quarry in Covington, Va., is a little more picturesque than a typical limestone quarry.

“We live and work in a beautiful part of the country here,” said Steve Robertson,

superintendent at Boxley Materials Company’s Rich Patch Quarry. “The quarry is very close to George Washington National Forest. I tell people in the company that I’ve got the office with the best view!”

Established in 1892, Boxley Materials Company, a division of Summit Materials, purchased its first quarry 58 miles west of Roanoke, Va., in 1908. Today, the company operates several sites selling aggregate, asphalt and paving services, hardscapes and concrete throughout Roanoke and Lynchburg, Va. The company acquired Rich Patch Quarry from Vulcan Materials Company in 2002.

LNestled in the mountains of Virginia, Rich Patch Quarry has a view that doesn’t

disappoint – with the added bonus of a new, bright orange Hitachi on site.

YEAR-ROUND PRODUCTIVITY

lthough quarry production runs for only nine months, Boxley Materials keeps its ZX350LC-6 working year-round. The machine is equipped with a quick coupler so operators can easily switch from the breaker to a bucket for other applications.

“In the winter months when it’s cold up here in the mountains, we try to do our stripping and overburden removal,” Robertson said. “So we’ll use the Hitachi with a bucket to take care of it.”

As a lifelong heavy equipment fan, Robertson is a hands-on superintendent and enjoys operating the Hitachi excavator. He admitted the new machine took a little getting used to.

“The hydraulics on the 350 are a little bit faster than what I was operating before,” he said. “It took me a week or two to get used to them, and now I like them. No going back now!”

COST-EFFECTIVE RELIABILITY

Boxley Materials has owned and operated Hitachi equipment since 1996 – starting with an EX700 shovel – and continues to add to its fleet.

“The reason we continue to use Hitachi equipment is that they’re cost-effective,” Robertson said. “The Hitachi 350 for us has been fuel-efficient. Serviceability has been great. It seems to be very smooth operating.”

Even the local wildlife seems to be fans of the new excavator at the quarry.

“We’re in bear country and we found a footprint on the Hitachi where a bear crawled up on it!” Robertson laughed. “I guess he was curious and wanted to check it out.”

Along with reliable equipment, Robertson said the company appreciates its dependable dealer support as well.

“Any time we need service, James River Equipment is spot on,” he said. “We’re very pleased with the service we’re getting from them. Parts and service are a big part of why we buy Hitachi.”

As for Robertson, he continues to enjoy his office view – and the equipment.

“I love this work,” he said. “I get to run equipment every day, and not all superintendents get to do that!”

A GOLDEN OPPORTUNITY

When it came to ordering its ZX350LC-6, Boxley Materials got the opportunity to see its new excavator fresh off the production line at a Gold Key event held at Deere-Hitachi Construction Machinery Corp. in Kernersville, N.C.

Each Hitachi excavator produced at the Kernersville facility is built with pride, made to order and available for customization. Customers are invited to the facility to experience their machines firsthand through Gold Key Events.

Josh French, James River Equipment customer service advisor; Steve Robertson, Boxley Materials superintendent; Mike French, Boxley Materials director of mobile equipment; Danny Scarce, Boxley Materials operator; Darrell Printz, James River Equipment general manager and vice president; Ryan Dieckman, John Deere corporate business manager; and Daniel Beasley, James River Equipment sales; attended the event (pictured L to R).

The Boxley Materials team met with Deere-Hitachi management and toured the facility for a behind-the-scenes look at the heart of their machine and the hands that crafted it.

“I was extremely impressed with how clean the facility was,” Robertson said. “I was also impressed with the process that if a weld didn’t meet the standard, the employee who welded it was required to come down to the inspection point to repair it. It was really cool, too, that I was allowed to tram the machine off the assembly line.”

To better support our growing Latin American market, we were excited to announce the opening of a new regional parts distribution center (RDC) in Miami, Fla., in November 2017. The 115,000-square-foot parts facility will serve all Latin American countries, with the exceptions of Brazil, Argentina and Mexico, which currently have in-country RDC locations.

Hitachi, in partnership with John Deere, uses a comprehensive parts distribution system to improve parts fill and response to urgent needs. Parts flow through our network consisting of a primary distribution facility based in Milan, Ill., and regional facility locations.

Latin American dealers and customers were previously serviced from our parts centers in Milan, Ill., and in Campinas, SP, Brazil. The new Miami location is expected to improve cycle time on emergency and stock orders for these dealers and customers, and provide efficient delivery of more than 38,000 service parts!

Hitachi has the parts you need when you need them, to keep your machines running at peak performance. ■

Spring Issue 2018 BREAKOUT

Improving an airport’s infrastructure while it remains fully functional is no easy task. But Nan, Inc. is up for the challenge,

often digging through the night to get the job done.

he project, headed by the Hawaii Department of Transportation (HDOT) Airports Division, is part of the $2.7 billion Modernization Program for improving airport facilities statewide.

It’s not surprising that Nan was entrusted with the project – the company is the state’s largest locally owned and operated general contractor. Nan provides a wide array of professional construction services including preconstruction, general contracting and design-build.

Currently, the north and south terminals of KOA operate independently, which means passengers must go through security when entering the different terminals. Nan will consolidate the two terminals, which will allow passengers – more than 3 million using the airport annually – to freely move between the terminals.

The company is also building a new baggage handling facility, which requires digging an 18-foot deep tunnel for the baggage handling equipment. Nan is digging drainage wells and installing all utilities as well. All the facility improvements will help streamline airport operations.

Nan started work at the airport in February 2017 and anticipates project completion in 2019. The company dedicated the ZX470LC-6, its newest Hitachi workhorse, to the project.

“The new Hitachi 470 is very helpful on this project,” said Glenn Kobayashi, a Nan project manager. “It’s the largest piece of equipment on the project, so

it’s our workhorse digging the tunnel and the utility packages. We haven’t had any issues and it’s done a great job!”

MANAGING LOGISTICS

Logistics and project coordination are extremely important for Nan to help keep airport operations running smoothly as the project progresses, especially considering the airport’s location.

“Being on the Big Island is something we have to work with,” Kobayashi said. “You don’t get one-day air. It’s two-day or barge. When you get the barge, it might stop at another island before it gets here. The logistics are difficult on anything from construction supplies to equipment parts.”

Nan must also adjust its crew’s schedule while working on site.

“Due to the constraints of working in an operating airport, we have to modify our schedule,” Kobayashi said. “So sometimes we work at night so we don’t impact airport operations. We have to look at lights, additional traffic control and security.”

Kobayashi said keeping the project on track requires a team effort.

“Working at an active airport is very difficult,” he said. “The traffic control, the coordination between the airlines, the operating center, the different tenants, the general public, TSA, FAA. There are a lot of people we need to coordinate with.”

“The new Hitachi 470 is very helpful on this project... We haven’t

had any issues and it’s done a great job!”

Glenn Kobayashi Project Manager

Nan, Inc.

It’s 10 p.m. and flight traffic is settling down for the day at the Onizuka Kona International Airport at Keahole (KOA) on the Island of Hawaii. As the day

comes to an end, Nan, Inc. starts up its Hitachi ZX470LC-6 excavator on the airport’s major project called the Terminal Modernization Program Phase 1,

a $75 million investment in airport upgrades and layout reorganization.

RIGHT MACHINE FOR THE JOB

an weighed its options carefully when it came to choosing the right excavator to work on the project.

“With this being an existing airport, there are a lot of existing utilities that we need to be aware of,” Kobayashi said. “We don’t want to shut down any airlines. We can’t use too big of a machine; we don’t want to damage anything.”

Scott Oshiro, a Nan senior project manager, said the ZX470LC-6 has been a good choice for the work.

“The 470 is the perfect size machine,” he said. “Not too big, not too small and it has good power for the work we’ve been doing. I wish we had another one!”

While Kona is a rocky environment – the airport’s runway was largely built on lava flow – the terrain doesn’t seem to bother Kobayashi.

“We like working in Kona because we have a lot of sunshine and a lot of rock versus other parts of the Big Island where you might have a lot of rain and mud,” he said. “The Hitachi can handle the rock!”

Walter Andrade, a Nan operator with 40 years of experience, has done a lot of digging with the new ZX470LC-6 and is a fan of the machine as well.

“I like the height, shorter tail and power,” Andrade said. “It’s really smooth.”

While Nan navigates the challenges of working at an active airport, Kobayashi said any worries are minimized by having the 470 on site along with his Hitachi dealer’s support.

“Access is very difficult working in the AOA (air operations area),” he said. “We definitely want to minimize downtime and bringing in mechanics and service people. So having a brand new Hitachi 470 on the jobsite really makes my life easier. And we get great support from American Machinery as well.”

Extremely efficient combustion and an improved piston design allow the Isuzu engines to burn particulate matter in cylinder. This eliminates the need for a DPF, saving you service time and lowering operating costs.

This simple and efficient technology is front and center with Hitachi’s FT4 Dash-6 models. The FT4 Isuzu engine technology employs cooled exhaust gas recirculation (EGR), a diesel oxidation catalyst (DOC) and selective catalytic reduction (SCR).

Diesel exhaust fluid (DEF), a mixture of high-purity urea and deionized water, is a reactant needed for SCR. DEF is injected into the exhaust stream of the engine, runs through a catalyst, and turns the NO

X in the exhaust into harmless water vapor and nitrogen gas.

The EGR is specifically tuned to further reduce NOX (compared to EPA

Interim Tier 4 (IT4)/EU Stage IIIB engines) to meet the most recent emission standards with minimal use of DEF.

When it comes to productivity-boosting advantages, Hitachi has you covered with FT4 solutions. ■
