Alpha House Expansion Things to Remember

Here is a picture of the front of the shelter. We are going to try and raise the funds to build a 20 x 20 expansion here to help with the very small dining area and living room. We have noticed that the amount of men we can have at one time is about six. The irritation factor is too great when we have more than six because without room to breathe, everybody is on each other’s nerves. If we have more living room and dining room it might enable us to go back to our eight bed capacity without the irritation factor. Also the added living room space would also allow us to resume our Monday Night Bible Study that friends and love ones of the guys in the shelter can attend. Part of helping the men is also helping their family

Bridging the Gap

Someone posted this statistic based on a nationwide census. It also reflects the ratio we have experienced over the past 15 years at the Alpha House Men’s Shelter. It has been my experience that the tools that are needed to help veterans are much different than the ones needed for average homeless man. Some veterans that have distinguished military records are ending up living on the streets because of untreated PTSD or TBI and self-medication with drugs and alcohol. This Veteran Homeless Shelter that we are going to start will be for Veterans only and will focus on the needs that they have. We will use whatever resources are readily available for the vets and we will bridge the gap between what they need and what is available, not only for them but also for their families.
