What Are Assisted Living and Personal Care Homes?

An assisted living/personal care home is a home so

unique, you feel a sense of being a part of an extend-

ed family.

These types of homes are devoted to caring for indi-

viduals who are unable to live alone. The homes are

small, with less than 25 residents and staffed 24-hours

per day. The staff provides assistance or support with

their activities of daily living, such as eating, bathing,

grooming, ambulating, dressing, toileting and assisting

with medications.

Each home has its unique personality and amenities.

For example, some homes are located in a country

setting with large, spacious yards while others are located

in the city near urban support systems.

Who Lives in Assisted Living and Personal Care Homes?

Many seniors who require help with the activities of

daily living fi nd that the assisted living/personal

care home environment best suits their needs.

What Services do Homes Provided?

The services provided by assisted living/personal care

homes vary from home to home. Here are a few

things some of the homes may provide:

• Three balanced meals and snacks

• Assistance with bathing, grooming and dressing

• Laundry and housekeeping

• Transportation

• Assistance with medications

• Availability of home health professional staff

• Interaction with children and pets

• Social and recreational activities

What are the Homes Like?

Each home is individual and unique. Some homes

feature the following:

• Rooms for single or double occupancy

• Bathrooms with handicapped accommodations for

wheelchairs and walkers

• Availability of furnished or unfurnished room

• Telephone and cable-ready rooms

• Fire alarm systems that meet state fi re codes

• Fenced yards

• Social and Recreational Activities

Types of Assisted Living Facilities:

Type A Homes

The resident:• must be physically and mentally capable of evacuating

the facility unassisted• does not require routine attendance during night-time

sleeping hours• must be capable of following directions under emer-

gency conditions

Staff in a small facility is not required to remain awake but must be immediately available. Staff in a large

facility must be awake and immediately available.

Type B Homes

The resident:• may require staff assistance to evacuate • may be incapable of following directions under emer-

gency conditions• may require attendance during night-time hours• should not be permanently bedbound, but may require

assistance in transferring to and from wheelchair

Staff for all Type B facilities must be awake and imme-diately available.

Type C Homes

A four-bed facility which meets the minimum standards and program rules for enrollment with the Texas De-

partment of Human Services as an adult foster care facil-ity.
