Cathie Dibert served in the US Army from 1989-1992 as military intelligence cryptanalyst. She began growing vegetables as a hobby and realized there is a need for local access to fresh produce for the local communities. Cathie produces lettuce mix, spinach, green onions, candy onions, beets, carrots, radishes, garlic, shell peas, snow peas, green beans, dry beans, herbs, asparagus, rhubarb, cauliflower, broccoli, cabbage, celery, celeriac, cucumbers, tomatoes, sweet and hot peppers, okra, sweet potatoes, pumpkins, guards, leeks, parsnips, turnips, raspberries, blackberries, ground cherries, huckleberries, grapes, pears, horseradish, walnuts, chestnuts, pork, beef, goat and lamb.

Upper Bern Township resident Dennis Essig has two purple hearts due to 13 different wounds during his service in the US Army. He was awarded the National Defense Medal and Sharp Shooters Badge M14 with Rifle Bar, Combat Infantry Badge, Vietnam Service Medal, Vietnam Campaign Medal with 60 Device and Army Commendation Medal.

Dennis and his wife Lucy produce various vegetables and eggs.

Steven enlisted in the US Air Force in May of 1979 and re-enlisted in 1983. He served active duty for 7 years, 7 months and 7 days. Steven was an E-5 Staff Sergeant, his job was as a Targeting Intelligence Specialist in the Strategic Air Command (SAC), where He worked with FB-111 and B52 bomber crews. He continued serving in the PA Air National Guard for 5 additional years. Steven produces hops. Jason Sarine is a veteran of the United States Air Force. Humble Hen Farm and Nursery is in Abbottstown PA. Jason spent 4 years in the military and chose to come back to PA to be closer to his family. He started a farm in PA so he could be home more often with his 3 beautiful daughters. Jason maintains a full time job at the Harrisburg Airport as an Air Traffic Controller until his dream of farming full-time can become a reality. The farm currently has 3 greenhouses and sells vegetable starts, hanging baskets, cut flowers, and farm fresh eggs. Currently, Jason, his wife and his brother work the farm.

Judy Smeltzer, is an organic farm in Susquehanna County, certified by NOFA-NY (Northeast Organic Farming Association of New York) since 2002. Harford Farm is inspected annually, and only Certified Organic Vegetables, Herbs, Flowers, Fruit are grown.

Mr. Smeltzer is an 11 Bravo Combat Veteran, he served a 2 year tour in Vietnam on behalf of the U.S. Army.

He is also a Board Member of the Pennsylvania Farmers Union, representing the NE Region.
