Meaning
Knowledge gives modesty. Through modesty comes worthiness. By
worthiness one gets prosperity and from prosperity one does good deeds
and thereupon one is free from sorrow.

The Pran is the bow, the Atma is the arrow and the Brahma is said to be its mark (goal). It should be hit by one who is self collected and like an arrow becomes one with the mark.

Translation of the National Anthem
Thou art the ruler of the minds of all people,
Thou dispenser of India’s destiny.
Thy name rouses the hearts of Punjab, Sindhu, Gujarat and Maratha, of
Dravid, Odisha and Bengal.
It echoes in the hills of the Vindhyas and Himalayas.
It mingles in the music of Jamuna and Ganges, and is chanted by the
waves of the Indian Ocean.
They pray for Thy blessing and sing Thy praise, Thou dispenser of
India’s destiny.
Victory, Victory, Victory to Thee.
7 ALMANAC 7
NATIONAL FLAG
The Indian flag was designed as a symbol of freedom. The late Prime
Minister Jawahar Lal Nehru called it a flag not only of freedom for
ourselves, but a symbol of freedom to all people.
The flag is a horizontal tricolour in equal proportion of deep saffron on
the top, white in the middle and dark green at the bottom. The ratio of
the width to the length of the flag is two is to three. In the centre of the
white band, there is a wheel in navy blue to indicate the Dharma Chakra,
the wheel of law in the Sarnath Lion Capital. Its diameter approximates
the width of the white band and it has 24 spokes. The saffron stands for
courage, sacrifice and the spirit of renunciation; the white, for purity and
truth; the green for faith and fertility.
ALMANAC 8
NATIONAL EMBLEM
The National Emblem of India is the replica of the Lion of Sarnath, near
Varanasi in Uttar Pradesh. The Lion Capital was erected in the third
century BC by Emperor Ashoka to mark the spot where Buddha first
proclaimed his gospel of peace and emancipation to four quarters of
the universe. The National emblem is thus symbolic of contemporary
India's reaffirmation of its ancient commitment to world peace and
goodwill.
The four lions (one hidden from view) - symbolising power, courage
and confidence - rest on a circular abacus. The abacus is girded by
four smaller animals - guardians of the four directions: The lion of the
north, the elephant of the east, the horse of the south and the bull of
the west. The abacus rests on a lotus in full bloom, exemplifying the
fountainhead of life and creative inspiration. The motto 'Satyameva
Jayate' inscribed below the emblem in Devanagari script means 'truth
alone triumphs’.

To my country and my people, I pledge my
devotion. In their well-being and prosperity alone
lies my happiness.
ALMANAC 10

Nine Rules for Getting Effective Results from Prayers
ALMANAC 54
1O God ! Shower on me your light
Help me to keep away from all wrongAnd do what is right.
Help me to be good, wise and strong,And a proud DIPSITE.
Amen!
2Lord, make me an instrument of Thy purpose
Where there is hatredlet me sow love
where there is injury, forgiveness;where there is doubt, faith
where there is despair, hope;where there is darkness, light;where there is sadness, joy.
O Divine Master, grant that I may not, so much seek
to be consoled, as to consoleto be understood, as to understand
and to be loved as to love; For it is in giving that we receive
it is in forgiveness, that we are forgiven.
3Lord, behold our family here assembled. We thank Thee, for this place in which we dwell:
for the love that unites us, for the peace accorded us this day: for the hope with which
we expect the morrow, for the health, the work, the food and the bright skies that make our
lives delightful.

4GOD’S LOVE IS SO WONDERFUL
God’s love is so wonderful (3x)
Oh! Wonderful love!
So high, you can’t get over it (3x)
Oh! Wonderful love!
So deep, you can’t get under it (3x)
Oh! Wonderful love!
So wide, you can’t get around it (3x)
Oh! Wonderful love!
God’s love is so wonderful (3x)
Oh! Wonderful love
5God help me to be patient
and make those who love me patient.
Forgive and help them to forgive me
if I am unreasonable or demanding
or when I lose my temper over little things.
When I am wrong
Give me the grace to admit it wholly
Neither offering excuses nor trying to shift the blame.
Make me more honest in my thinking,
more charitable in my opinions.
ALMANAC 56
6O God, give me clean hands,
clean words and clean thoughts
Help me to stand, for the hard right
against the easy wrong.
Save me, from habits that harm;
teach me to work as hard
and to play as fair,
in thy sight alone,
as if all the world saw.
Forgive me when I am unkind
and help me to forgive those, who are unkind to me.
Keep me ready to help others
at some cost to myself
and give me chances to do some good everyday.
7Oh, God educate our eyes, to see you in all faces,
to behold unity of self, in all beings.
Educate our ears to hear the goodness of all.
Educate our tongue to sing the praise of Thee
and to utter pleasant, loving and truthful words.
Educate our hands to do charity, and serve the needy.
Educate our minds to be always cheerful and calm.

8ALL THINGS BRIGHT AND BEAUTIFUL
Chorus All things bright and beautiful, All creatures great and small, All things wise and wonderful, The Lord God made them all.
Each little flower that opens, Each little bird that sings, He made their glowing colours, He made their tiny wings.
The purple-headed mountain, The river running by, The sunset, and the morning That brightens up the sky;
He gave us eyes to see them, And lips that we might tell How great is God Almighty, Who has made all things well.
9WE SHALL OVERCOME
Chorus We shall overcome, We shall overcome, We shall overcome some day; Oh deep in my heart, I do believe We shall overcome some day.
Verses 1. We shall live in peace 2. The truth will make us free 3. We shall integrate 4. We’ll walk hand in hand
ALMANAC 58
10HEAL THE WORLD
There’s a place in your heart and I know that it is loveAnd this place could be much brighter than tomorrowAnd if you really try you’ll find there’s no need to cryIn this place you’ll feel there’s no hurt or sorrowThere are ways to get there if you care enough for the living. Make little space, make a better place,
Chorus
1. Heal the world, make it a better place For you and for me and the entire human race There are people dying if you care enough for the living Make a better place for you and for me.
2. If you want to know why, there’s a love that cannot lie Love is strong, it only cares for joyful giving If we try we shall see in this bliss we cannot feel Fear or dread we stop existing and start living Then it feels that always love’s enough for us growing So make a better world, make a better world.
Chorus
And the dream we were conceived in will reveal a joyful face And the world we once believed in will shine again in grace Then why do we keep strangling life, wound this earth, crucify its soul Though it’s plain to see, this world is heavenly, be God’s glow.
3. We could fly so high, let our spirits never die In my heart I feel you are all my brothers Create a world with no fear, together we’ll cry happy tears See the nations turn their swords into plowshares We could really get there if you cared enough for the living Make a little space to make a better place.
59 ALMANAC 59
11WE ARE THE WORLD
1. There comes a time when we heed a certain call
When the world must come together as one
There are people dying, oh and it’s time to lend a hand
To life the greatest gift of all.
2. We can’t go on pretending day by day
That someone somewhere will soon make a change
We are all a part of God’s great big family
And the truth you know love is all we need.
Chorus
We are the world, we are the children
We are the ones to make a brighter day
So let’s start giving
There’s a choice we’re making
We’re saving our own lives
It’s true we make a better day just you and me.
2. We’ll send them your hearts so they know that
someone cares
And their lives will be stronger and free
As God had shown us by turning stone to bread
And so we all must lend a helping hand.
Chorus
When you’re down and out, there seems no hope at all
