I t’s finally starting to feel like fall on thebeach and with the pleasant cooltemperatures, we might turn to
comfort foods as we prepare for winter. It’stime to let Taco Tuesday rest for the season. But don’t worry, I promise Tacos will returnwith the warmer weather in 2016. For now,I’m getting excited about our newFall/Winter menu which will highlight weekly
specials with a few of everyone’s favorite comfort foods.Watch for lasagna, pot pies and possibly Grandma’sMinnesota Goulash. We love all the positive feedbackabout the food we proudly serve up here so thank you allfor coming back again and again to enjoy!
For those in a giving mood this month, we’ll takeclothing and food donations for our local shelter. Pleasebring items to the Restaurant or Café throughout themonth of November. We will see that the food is donatedin time to be distributed for Thanksgiving.
October enjoyed a few fun-filled events like theCalcutta auction, Oktoberfest and Halloween. It is alwaysgreat to see so many homeowners and members gatherfor our Social Events, and we’ve got much more fun yetto come. Your Social Committee is planning events wellinto 2016 already!

backbone of this club'sprogramming as well as alwayswelcoming new faces to ourranks when they get involvedwith a smile and handshake.
This year's auction raised
$562.50 for the Venice Boys & GirlsClub. In addition, the champsearned $1,913 for their owners, the runners-up earned $638, andthe Gold Champs and the thirdplace finishers received $318. Itwas an amazing auction with lotsof energy and wrangling aspeople tried to figure who theteams "in the money" would be.In the end, Carlos Dunkerly &Elyse Filderman came in as theChamps over Jim Richards &Karen Dixon in a closelycontested three "set" final with ascore of 32-25, 30-32, 32-26. Thepoints involved a lot of heavyslicing and topspin with greatdefense on all sides, but thedecisive shot came in the third setat 29-26, with Jim and Karenclosing the gap having won threepoints in a row and havingimpressive momentum, Elyse hit areturn of Karen's solid first servedown the alley behind thealways-aggressive Jim, to put herteam within two points of thematch and set the table for themto serve out the victory. W ow! What a greatnight of auctioning offsome amazing teams
with lots of new faces participatingin this year's Calcutta. thirty spectators enjoyed thewonderful match along with pizza, salad, wings, and drinks fromGatorade to beer.
In the other "money" matches, the other semi-finalists duked it outfor $318 for third place. This matchfeatured the steady control of LucyWalker and Jack Hubka against thepower hitting of Raul Hernandez andHillary Bibicoff. In the end,Hernandez and Bibicoff held off Lucyand Jack for the victory 32-30, 32-26and a share of the pool.
In the Gold Division finals, we hadMarv Benson and Karin Shoup, another steady duo versus ElliotNache and Karen Berliner, anotherpower duo. This outcome wasreversed with Shoup and Bensonedging out Nache and Berliner forthe Gold Division crown and theirshare of the pool ($318).
In the side betting, thirteen sharesof Dunkerly / Filderman werepurchased, splitting the pot amongstthose wise decision-makers.
A special thanks goes to thepeople who bought teams at theauction, for without them, the actionwould be far less interesting and theBoys and Girls Club would receivenothing! The buyers with (along withunnamed friends who contributed totheir pools of cash): RichardReinjohn, Al Slayton, Hillary Bibicoff,Mary Djabbari, Jack Hubka, LucyWalker, Carol Barlin, and CostanzaGuerrini. All of you made this year'sauction a time to remember foreveryone involved. See you all nextyear in October for another exciting, and hopefully cooler Calcutta!

Renard Johnson is now offering tennis lessons at MCC. He is an experienced professional who has played on

T here is a new programfor rating players (okay, not that new, but new
to our club and me) that Idiscovered when visiting apotential tennis destinationfor the club in Rancho SantaFe in September. It’s calledSSV, which stands for Serve,Stroke, and Volley. This “test”uses fairly objective, result-oriented numbers to rate atennis player on three things:accuracy, power, andmobility. It tests yourforehand and backhand, theforehand and backhandvolleys, and the serve. Theplayer can score up to 200points. You may receive upto two points for power andup to two points for accuracyon each shot. You hit eightshots with each stroke for apotential score of 160 totalpoints. In a separate test, you are checked on mobilitybased on your time whenrunning the lines on court, forwhich you can also receive
up to 40 points. This program provides a
number that gives aquantitative analysis that thecreator of the program, NeilJohnson, says is 80% accurateas to who will win a tennismatch. Players can be pairedagainst any other player withinten points above or belowthem and be pretty muchassured of a competitivematch. If you’d like to getevaluated using this newprogram, please contactGene at ext. 326 and he willbe happy to discuss a time forthe evaluation. It takes about10 minutes, but you mustcome warmed up and readyto take the test. The othergreat thing about ssv is itbecomes very clear from yourscore sheet where yourstrengths and weaknesses are,so you know exactly what youneed to work on in the future. For more information on thisprogram, please visitssvtennis.com.
Gene's Tip of the Month
“Use SSV Tennis to get an accurate rating
of your tennis skills”
