Joseph Allnatt Cenrte Ltd – Teaching Children Outdoors Since 1924Joseph Allnatt Cenrte Ltd – Teaching Children Outdoors Since 1924

In 1978, I had taught in a large progressive Comprehensive School in Devon which grounded me. Two years in a High School in Jamaica, not a glamorous tourist part, made me question all my beliefs and values.

I spent a “gap year” cruising in a catamaran around the Mediterranean, reflecting, and came back with the passion for outdoor learning which has driven me ever since.

A post came up as a Sports Organiser at a commercial Activity Centre in Swanage which I expected to be temporary. I have never wanted to leave.

The Chatsworth Centre was one of the Joseph Allnatt Centres which were founded by Joseph Allnatt in 1924. He bought a disused aerodrome in Kent and created the St Mary’s Bay Holiday Camp as the first School Journey Camp in the country.

Joseph’s vision was to provide residential accommodation where children from different social classes could meet and have fun together, and learn more about a different environment from their home. It was huge and it was incredibly successful.

When I joined Allnatt, the Camp had been sold and there were 6 smaller Centres in carefully chosen locations, which appealed to school groups. Over the years I have worked at most of them and held a variety of posts, eventually becoming Managing Director in 1996.

In 2005 the Directors negotiated a Management Buy Out.

I am personally as passionate about teaching children outdoors as ever and believe wholeheartedly in the family feel of our organisation.

Denea Wright

My Allnatt Story...

“We are Allnatt because we believe that the vision of Joseph Allnatt is as relevant today as ever”

“Come to the edge. We might fall! Come to the edge. It’s too high!

Come to the edge - and they came And we pushed and they flew”

Children and teachers need the opportunity to get away from their homes and their schools to discover a world without expectations, where they can have fun with each other and re-engage with nature and childhood.

We specialise in field work & outdoor adventurous activities in harmony with the

seashore, coast & woodlands Through a range of adventurous activities and fieldwork modules we aim to promote communication, respect for each other, problem solving and increased self-esteem. Most of all, we encourage children (and adults) to awaken their senses and simply enjoy being together outdoors.

Whether you visit for a day or for a week you will receive quality care and tuition in every aspect of the programme, from gentle and caring staff who know when to push and when to support. The range of outdoor activities will lead the children on a journey of self discovery of their strengths and weaknesses helping them to become more self aware. There will be challenging moments and comforting moments. There will be times to concentrate and times to let off steam. There will be lots of action, and some quiet times to reflect and review. Above all, it will be a time of growing self confidence where learning and fun go hand in hand creating a time that will be special and never forgotten.

Equally important are the social aspects of each visit - learning to share a bedroom, eating at the table and being responsible for personal belongings.

There will be full support for you, the teacher, in providing the most memorable time for your children where they will learn, be inspired, play and, of course, have lots of fun!

OFSTED

”when planned and implemented well, learning outside the classroom con-tributed significantly to raising standards and improving pupil’s personal and social development”We have the resources and experience to support every teacher to ensure that all learning outdoors isoutstanding. We can help you to achieve the LOtC Gold Badge to demonstrate this.

“Gathering a bunch of unrelated activities and calling them aprogramme is like recording a bunch of unrelated sounds and calling

them a symphony…” We like to think of each programme as being more of a journey, place and habitat based, and where learning is recognised, shared and celebrated. Whatever your need, we will work closely with you, using our expert advice, to provide the best value programme you can find. We are also happy to include a Parents Talk free of any charge to ensure that parents are reassured that their money is well spent! And of course you are welcome to visit The Chatsworth or East Dene, with your family, to meet us and assess the fantastic location and facilities for yourself.

“We truly appreciate the welcome we receive each time we come to yourcentre. We especially like the availability and adaptability of the staff

and their knowledge of the local area”

“As society becomes increasingly risk averse and litigious, we are indanger of suffocating our children in rules, regulations and cotton wool.

Life is full of challenges and we owe it to them to equip them with the skills to recognise risk, assess them sensibly and react positively”

- Ofsted’s Learning Outside the Classroom Report

Some of the Learning Outcomes and Benefits achieved through effective Outdoor Learning

“Lots of children improved during the session and it was really good for someof the less ‘sporty’ children who did really well. In the team building therewere lots of opportunities for the children to shine. Tasks were adapted if

children were struggling. There was plenty of feedback about how to improvethen the tutors were really good at stepping back and letting the children

organise themselves giving pointers when necessary”

PROGRESSION IN OUTDOOR LEARNING Here at Allnatt we have a highly experienced team of outdoor educators who can provide professionaladvice and support for your school’s total Learning Outside the Classroom needs. We are able to ensureprogression through each outdoor experience and help to improve each child’s personal and socialdevelopment as well as their academic attainment as they move through the school.

AN ADVENTURE DAY IN YOUR SCHOOL GROUNDS We bring our staff and adventure activities to you! We have a range of portable team building tasks which the team can bring to you to run a day of activity in your grounds. The facilitation skills of the tutors ensure that this is a great learning experience for each and every child. Each activity is reviewed by the children themselves so that they can truly learn and work out for themselves ways of improving their team performance. It also gives you a chance to step back and observe your children perhaps in anew light. The activities can be based on literacy and numeracy, PE, or bushcraft and creative ways of using the outdoors as a team building day. We also run a day focussing on the needs of children in transition / induction.

A TRADITIONAL TENTED CAMP IN YOUR SCHOOL GROUNDS Sleeping in a tent is just the best fun ever, yet so many children don’t get to experience it! We bring all the equipment you need and assembleit for you in your own grounds. Teachers havesignificantly less to organise, children are in familiarsurroundings for their first residential experience and importantly, parents have the comfort of knowing that their child is safe and just down the road. The camps add a modern twist to traditional approaches to key curriculum areas such as numeracy, literacy, science, geography, PE and citizenship. Add toasted marshmallows and bedtime cocoa and it’s what childhood is made of...

The camps can have a theme running through them:

CAMP OUT is our classic, one night, sleepover option. Pitch the camp, settle into your camps, lightthe fire, toast marshmallows and enjoy being under the stars. Activities from Kinball, Bushcraft toLeonardo’s Bridge can be added.

SCHOOL CAMP is one night and two full days of activities and is perfect for the summer termgiving the opportunity to stretch the children’s learning and thinking skills.

East Dene is a truly inspirational venue with the Mansion and the Coach House set in beautiful grounds and woodland, both overlooking the sea. Each building has a different character; the Mansion was the home of two important Victorian families and the Coach House was built to provide for their horses and carriages. Both have been converted with the needs of children in mind whilst retaining the heritage of such grand buildings.

The majority of our bedrooms are bunk bedded with single and twin bedded rooms nearby. The Mansion can accommodate up to 100 children or can be sub divided for smaller class size groups. The Coach House can accommodate up to 80 children and can also be subdivided to provide exclusive bedrooms for class sizes. There are showers and toilets on every floor.

In each building there is a lounge with unlimited tea and coffee for adults and a fridge to chill your wine, a meeting room and WiFi. In the Coach House there are two rooms which specialise in information on the seashore, coast and local Bonchurch History. The Mansion Rooms are stunning with magnificent ceilings and oak panels which give a great sense of Victorian grandeur and yet are comfortable and relaxing. The Coach House Hall has recently been re-roofed and has a lovely light meeting room and indoors pace.It is often used for concerts and exhibitions.

Mealtimes are a very important part of the East Dene experience. Children from both buildings are served in the Mansion where there are three traditional dining rooms. The menus have been developed to provide for the hungriest and fussiest of eaters! There is a choice at each meal for adults, children and vegetarians. Special diets are no problem. Each group is provided with a sports box for use during downtime but we especially encourage children to explore and play out in the woods knowing that they are in a safe environment outdoors without traffic or strangers. The heated outdoor pool is also very popular.

East Dene also has direct access to the Old Church of St Boniface, one of the smallest and oldest churches on the Island and down to Monks Bay for rock pooling and beach study and games. Everybody says that East Dene is very special!

DO YOU REMEMBER YOUR SCHOOL TRIPS? Most teachers do. They are often recalled as the highlight of school life. If you are looking for outdoor adventurous activities or a field studies trip, or best still, a combination of both , then we are the people for you. We believe in cross curricular programmes with something to bring out the best in everyone. It is especially exciting to see the “invisible” children, (neither the brightest or the naughtiest!) shine and gain in self confidence. Our own Centres, the Chatsworth in Swanage and East Dene on the Isle of Wight with their mild climates, are well sought after Activity Centres where we work with our schools as partners to adapt each programme to the particular needs of each group of pupils. A fast growing programme, especially for academies is the Love Learning programme where students can refocus their energies away from the familiarity of the school classroom.

“We provide residential programmes which last!” ●● A Full Week ( Monday to Friday) ●● A Short Week ( Monday to Wednesday or Wednesday to Friday)

Each of the programmes includes a range of activities which have been refined and developed to provide the best educational experience, best value and best fun! With your approval, we use our experience and knowledge to write logistical programmes around the numbers in your group.

A Balanced DayThe daily timetable is carefully structured to give a balance of physical exercise, learning new skills, and acquiring knowledge but will also have opportunity to “let off steam”, enjoy some recreation and find some personal space. Of course, they will be supervised at all times as shown in the typical daily timetable below.

During Responsibility Time we encourage the children to take some responsibility for getting themselves ready for the day. During the briefing this will be checked out and hopefully each day they will learn a little more! We believe this is as important as the activities themselves and it is often a time when some children can be seen in a different light as they show themselves to be surprisingly sensible.

More detail of this plus a suggested Packing List will be included in the Leaders’ Guide which you will receive when you make your Provisional Booking. We also like to come to the School to give a Parents’ Presentation which gives parents a clear understanding of the benefits of the whole Programme and how best to prepare their children to get the best out of the experience and how to follow up at home afterwards.

“Learning gives Creativity, Creativity leads to Thinking, Thinking provides Knowledge. - Knowledge makes you Great”

OUTDOOR LEARNING RESIDENTIAL JOURNEYS

“Years of experience, reviewing and refining, and writing a comprehensive

training programme to ensure the competence of all our tutors, has produced a varied series of teaching modules and activities

from which each programme is designed according to the learning outcomes required by each school partner ”

PreparationBefore you even come to the Centre you will receive a pack for each child to help them prepare to get the most out of the residential. It will also help them to share the experience with their parents.

The JourneyThis is an exciting part of the residential, full of excitement and discovery.

The Welcome ActivityFrom the very beginning the children will get active with a fun and physical game to help them let off steam and immediately engage with the programme.

The Bedroom Challenge We believe that the social side of the residential is just as important as the activities. Sharing and keeping a room tidy will be a new experience for most of them- not to mention making their own beds up...

OrientationtTo ensure the safety and security of all our children our tutors will show small groups around the boundaries explaining how Centre systems work and establishing common ground rules and behavioural expectations.

The first visit to the beach after the journey to the centre is always very exciting for the children. There will be some beach games and a general introduction to some key geographical features before some special games which make them more aware of the senses.

Sensory Awakenings In this session we get the children not just to identify their senses but also to use them more effectively; to look rather than just see, to listen rather than just hear, to feel rather than just touch. Through a series of games and exercises the children will develop their understanding and use of their senses and a deeper appreciation of the animals to be found around the centre grounds.

ON SITE PERSONAL SKILLS ARCHERYThis ever popular and timeless activity is very much at home at our Centres. Children visibly improve in self confidence as they gain skills in this sport.

MAP SKILLS AND GPS ORIENTEERINGTraditional map skills are contrasted against more modern ways of navigation through a series of courses and exercises.

WATER SKILLS IN THE HEATED OUTDOOR POOLIndividual skills and water safety knowledge are sure to increase self confidence. This includes snorkelling.

BUSHCRAFTThis is one of the fastest growing activities in popularity and teaches the children the basics of fire lighting, shelter building and cooking on an open fire.

CLIMBING ON CHATSWORTH TOWERThis timeless activity allows individuals to stretch their personal goals, climbing as high as possible. Lots of trust needed as we teach other group members to do the rope safety and belay up their friends. Abseiling can be added to progress the learning and confidence building part of this activity.

TREE CLIMBING AT EAST DENEWorking with our partner Goodleaf Tree Climbing we are thrilled to include this exciting activity into our options at East Dene. We use a fabulous living oak tree in our grounds so the children understand the workings of the tree before using a pulley system to climb into the canopy where they can swing or relax on a branch or in a hammock. It requires strength and technique and the reward is breathtaking.

OFF SITE PERSONAL SKILLS ROCK CLIMBING & ABSEILINGDancing Ledge on the Jurassic Coast is one of the most popular sites on the South Coastline. It also involves an expedition along the way, with magnificent views. You can’t beat climbing on a real rock face for a sense of achievement and excitement. Tree Climbing at Appley Park: T his takes place at Goodleaf’s own site.

WATER SPORTSAt Dunroamin Beach near Shanklin: a beautiful walk along the Undercliff brings thechildren to Wight Water where they can experience a Splash session including body boarding, kayaking and surfing. Or from Chastworth, a similar experience is offered with a classic walk via Old Harry Rocks then kayaking from Studland Beach with Studland Sea School.

HIGH AND LOW ROPESUsing Europe’s second largest high ropes course set in Rempstone forest, a morning or day can be spent climbing many rope elements high in the trees or on manmade structures. This is an excellent test for the bravest and most confident through to those with many fears to overcome. Our highly trained staff makes sure all individuals get to reach their best potential. Low ropes is an excellent team building activities, bringing the whole group together.

FISHING TRIPSNothing much can beat the thrill of getting on a fishing boat and heading out to see. The children are taught by the skipper how to use the basic tackle and knots used out at sea. They will each have a go at catching fish (mainly mackerel) and will get the opportunity to see the coastal wildlife and nature at its

best. There may also be an opportunity to fillet the fish before bringing it back to be cooked up on the campfire... Yummy!

Team BuildingThis involves tasks which teach children to, to communicate, to respect each other’s opinions and to make decisions. Groups are regularly encouaged to review their performance within the session in order to improve together as a team. Natural leaders can be identified and leadership skills can be taught. The invisible children can be brought out to shine.

CLASSIC TEAM BUILDING The classic elements of team building are taught and put into practice in a session which follows and works with group dynamics.

THEMED TEAM BUILDINGWe use a series of coastal themes to develop skills and knowledge as the group work together to solve a variety of tasks and problems whilst learning about the topics at the same time:

SCRAMBLE COURSEThe scramble course at East Dene takes the children up and down through some rough terrain where they will need to work together and encourage each other in a practical way.

THE BLINDFOLD TRAILSInclude sensory experiences and spatial awareness as the children follow the rope through a natural setting

PIONEERING AND RAFT BUILDINGA very practical exercise using ropes, planks, poles and knots to build a number of structures before designing their own to achieve a pre-determined purpose. They then go on to build their own rafts and decide their own method of propelling themselves safely across the heated pool.

NAVIGATION CHALLENGEThis is best in the Spring and Autumn terms when it is dark in the evenings. Using their heightened senses the children will navigate their way around a course experiencing the sounds and shadows of the night!

Fieldwork FocusTHE BEACH & BAYBrings geography alive as the children can see for themselves the processes of coastal erosion and management. The beach is truly where education, inspiration and play come together.

ROCKPOOLINGThis activity always excites the children. An emphasis is placed on the hands on experiences of observation and identification and an understanding of how marine animals and plants adapt to the hostile environment they live in. The children will also experience the effects of erosion and what can (or can’t?) be done to control it.

best. There may also be an opportunity to fillet the fish before bringing it back to be cooked up on the campfire... Yummy!

A SEASIDE STUDY Children are able to develop a sense of place in a locality which is usually in contrast to the one they come from. Different teaching methods keep the session alive as the children dip in and out of history. We visit different parts of each unique and fascinating seaside resort meeting some colourful characters who have played a major part in the history and development of the settlement. From fishing to quarrying, smuggling to respectability, high times to low times, the children get a real feel of how it is important for them to become positive citizens in the future. Geographical information and evidence will be collected to enable the children to consider how they could make a difference. Their ideas will always be listened to and valued.

WOODLAND QUESTAn exploration of the woodland habitat learning about food webs and food chains and about the animals that live there including our own endangered red squirrels which live at East Dene. From the Chatsworth the children will explore the well known Durlston Country Park which is famous for its contrasting habitats. It is widely recognised nowadays that children need to connect with nature and we provide a series of linked environmental games which connect children back with the natural environment. The session may also include some Junk Percussion using recycled objects.

Open Country Experience“Leaving the grounds of the Centre gives the chance to explore the surrounding

countryside and we are blessed with fantastic opportunities at both localities.” Climbing to the top of the nearby hills or “mountains” to some the children have a great sense of achievement. On a clear day it is possible to see for miles. Along the way we will explore the different habitats and the features of each, in hands on activities on a journey along the coast. There will be the chance to live on the wild side, at one with nature, and learning some new creative skills.

THE TRAILBLAZER JOURNEYThis day off site into open country brings together all the skills and knowledge learnt during the programme. From East Dene the breathtaking journey blazes the trail along the Undercliff then up and over Nansen Hill where the teamwork of the week is celebrated as the group reaches the highest point on the Island. Along St Boniface Down and down through farmland into the nearby seaside resort of Shanklin. From the Chatsworth similar elements are included in the route via the world famous Old Harry Rocks along part of the world heritage coast and down onto Studland Beach, on all there are lots of opportunities to chat and consolidate the learning about the coast that has taken place, before a final play on the beach and ice cream .Alternatively we can offer a trailblaze to the historic Corfe Castle where they will be enthralled by stories about all the past inhabitants!

THE TRAILBLAZER EXPEDITIONThe same risk controlled route is used from each Centre but a greater emphasis is placed on challenging the children both physically and mentally as they encounter a series of missions along the way. With our experienced tutors to guide them, they will plan their route, decide what equipment they need to take and how to deal with any “emergencies”. The prospect of buying an ice cream when they reach their destination will spur them on.

Recreational ProgrammeEvery evening there is a fun event where the children can run around and let off steam before bedtime.

STRATEGOTwo teams put their wits to steal each other’s treasure.

TRADITIONAL CELEBRATORY CAMPFIRE

“Nowhere better to sing songs and tell jokes than around a great fire!” ABC QUIZTactics are used to confuse and beat the opposition in this outdoor quiz about the Centre and locality.

KRAZY CAPERSIndividual fun team challenges. MYSTERIOUS MISSIONS A mix of brain teasers.

MURDER MYSTERYScripts and costumes are provided for the teacher “suspects” who are interviewed by the children “detectives” in order to find out “who dunnit”.

ReflectionThis is a special session which is vital to the children learning rather than just experiencing the programme. By the side of a campfire and with the prospect of toasting their own marshmallows, they will be encouraged to review the programme so far - to remember all the things they have done, to think about the high points and what they have achieved. They will also be encouraged to identify what they find difficult and to explain why. They will be encouraged to respect each other’s comments and offer help and support. This is a highlight of the programme and often very revealing for accompanying teachers and adult helpers.

OUR VISITORS SAY

“As the new Head of our school, I was very keen tovisit and stay in order to confirm the positive feedback from my staff in previous years. I was duly

impressed and can clearly see why the children rave about their visit. I loved the ‘can do’ attitude of your staff, the safe play area and the food”

- Richard Catchpole, Rowledge Primary School

“At the end of each activity, the children were asked to reflect on the activity and assess their own individual performance and consider what they could do

better. The focus was clear that self assessment leads to improvement” - Mrs J Wikinden

“The environmentally related activities brought the children back to real adventure”

“Pool sessions were fantastic and the staff engaged really well with our kids. It was perfectly tailored to our group”

- Elfrida Primary School

“The tutors brought out the very best in my children” - Mr R Broadstone

Young TravellerSome children are seasoned travellers to far flung places while some children have never been away from home before. For both, a traditional seaside holiday in England with friends from school cannot be beaten for fun and real memories. Young Traveller is a fully self self-led option, however we will always provide you with a very comfortable and welcoming visit. We will offer all meals and accommodation, and help assist you with planning your own programme. As we know a considerable amount on the local areas, we will also happily recommend other places of interest or transport companies to help plan your visit.

Young Traveller PlusThis a good option for those who may wish to ‘mix and match’ their own experiences on the south coast with some of the fantastic activities that we provide across the centres. We will accommodate any group for any activity during the planning stages of your visit, however we reserve the right to offer comparable alternatives to published or planned activities if conditions so dictate. Amended activities will still uphold the aims of the Programme.

With this programme for example, you have the option to explore Swanage Town at your leisure, then return to the Centre for an afternoon of Team Challenges, Bushcraft or Fun Activities in the pool, which will then take the pressure off the teachers in having to entertain the group for the duration of the visit. Accommodation and meals will be provided, however you will need to arrange your own transport throughout the week.

Coastal DiscoveryThe Coastal Discovery programme gives each child a balanced mix of outdoor education, physical activity, social interaction and opportunities for creative play. Children will discover the features and wonders of the coastal environment through hands-on learning in a mix of activities. They will learn by experiencing geographical features and processes, living history “meeting” colourful characters from the past. They will conduct some scientific experiments and carry out sand engineering. Acquiring a series of new skills through outdoor activities such as archery and map work will enhance their self confidence whilst our topical themed team building will help them to work much better as a class when they return to school. Add in some play (structured and unstructured) and creative time on the beach and in the woods and this will certainly be a varied week which the children will never forget.

Woodland ExplorerPupils who are encouraged to think creatively and independently become more interested in discovering things for themselves, more open to new ideas, keen to work with others to explore ideas and willing to work beyond lesson time when pursuing an idea or vision. As a result, their pace of learning, levels of achievement and self-esteem increase. Creativity prepares pupils for life: an important aim of the National Curriculum. With so many reports about children becoming disconnected from nature, this innovative programme, designed by our current team of tutors, offers a hands-on approach to build and develop a variety of skills within the woodland environment.

Outdoor Adventure The Outdoor Adventure Programme aims to use natural habitats to challenge the children to stretch themselves physically and emotionally in a risk controlled environment. The children will explore, make shelters, build dens and have real adventures. They will climb, run, balance, work together and push themselves and each other. Throughout they will be guided by our experienced tutors. All of this is designed for each child to develop greater self confidence both for themselves and for their place in the natural world.v

Transition / Induction The process of moving from Key Stage 2 to Key Stage 3, Local Authorities represent a crucially important stage in every child’s education and development. They can suddenly find themselves ”lost” in a big new environment where everything can seem anonymous and even a little frightening. Our Centres provide a microcosm of the experience and we provide a programme where the activities are designed to help children recognise that change is part of growing up, how it affects them and how to deal with it effectively. The key to the programme’s success is the directed Reflection session which ensures the learning experiences are taken forward. The benefits will be felt throughout the academic year as the children will feel supported, safe, happy and more confident.

SUPPORTING YOUR PARENTS’ TALK Involving parents is key and before the first visit of a new group we are happy to come along to give an illustrated talk and to answer any questions. Alternatively we have a PowerPoint Presentation for you to use yourselves. We are extremely conscious of the responsibility you hold as a group leader and the lack of time in your busy schedules so this is our way of giving you all the information and support you need especially to keep Parents informed and confident in your choice of venue.

“Our aim is to develop a long term Partnership with all our Schools, supporting your approach, by providing holistic education for each individual, with our

own specific and stimulating contribution”TRANSPORTWe are happy to help with organising the most reliable and cost effective transport to either of our Centres. Getting to the Isle of Wight is simple to arrange and the journey across the sea makes an exciting beginning to all visits to the Island. There are several routes to choose from. Coaches can pick up your group and bring you to our door. “At school we endeavour to create opportunities for cooperation, team building and thinking outside the box, however time

and facilities can limit this. The activities and environment at your centres promote all the qualities that we feel are important

for our children to become independent learners”
